Rolex Submariner 41 vs. Pre-Ceramic 14060M

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

EDIT: I meant to say the 14060M is the SUCCESSOR to the 14060 😅
Please enjoy my video comparing two versions of an outright classic by Rolex: the submariner - in its modern and OG forms.
Thanks for your support as always.

Classic preceramic for me. More character, better proportions esp for smaller wrists, super comfortable, and under the radar Rolex goodness.

I don't think the ceramic no date or even the black date really stand out, well not on a big wrist. Obviously if you have a precious metal one, or a coloured bezel, or a sunburst dial it's far from "under the radar".

I have the 14060M and I'm curious about the new model - that's why I'm here! One often overlooked difference which is relevant for smaller wrist sizes (mine's 6.5" too) is the pre-ceramic bracelet can only go down to 5 links on the 6 o'clock side, whereas the ceramic models can have 4 links. This means the clasp sits in the middle of your wrist and not slightly off to one side. It's not a deal breaker, but it's something that bugs me slightly on the older model.

I had both the modern ceramic and the pre ceramic and I think one of the biggest selling points for the pre ceramic was the versatility of the watch on a variety of straps. From nato to artem style sailcloth and even leather it’s a much more classic look with the slimmer case shape that lends itself to looking amazing on different combinations of straps. The older hollow end link hollow centre link bracelet is really lovely on the wrist but the modern clasp bracelet is a huge improvement over the older style folded metal version. Both great watches but for classic looks and versatility the 14060m for me.

14060m is greater. I am not sure if the new one is more robust. The issue I have is the 40.5 mill but also the ceramic bezel. Had a couple of friends shatter the bezel on rough terrain. I remember the replacement he a bit expensive compared to the steal insert. Also, the steal insert may scratch but won’t shatter. I prefer the lighter bracelet but the glide lock on the new one is very nice. Which ever one you have, you are getting a great piece that should be worn daily. Get all the dents and scratches on them and give it life. To be transparent I have had my 14060m since 05. It has been everywhere with me and still keeping great time. I have only serviced it once this past year and it has been running like a champ. This watch has been through surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, climbing, working out at the gym and still is a beast. If you chose a 14060m even today pre-owned you are getting a tank.

I like them both for different reasons. I own the 116610LN. Fantastic reference but it is a bit clunky. I really liked the 14060M at $3500-4000 when they were priced in the early days of 2010. Rolex does sometimes down size and go back to original case designs like they have with the Explorer 1 - 124270 which is a home run! Vintage size and feel with all the modern upgrades.

Great review!! I would chose the 14060m over the 41mm and the older 40mm. The M is truer to the submariner while the new one is more luxury. Also, if I were to drop the M the bezel insert my or may not get damaged. It it gets damaged it is cheaper to repair. If I drop the ceramic bezel it may shatter and is also more expensive to replace or repair. Also, because I have friends that own the 40mm version. One wears it to everything. Gym, work, hot tub, adventures and so forth. The bezel still looks new but I cannot say the same for the case. It is scratched and a small ding which to me is great but there is a bit of a mismatch. Especially if you look at from the side and then you see the bezel looking perfect just seems off. Case is lived in but the bezel still very sterile. That all being said I don’t think you can go wrong with either. Both can take a beating even those from the 90s with the caliber 3000. Wear both every day and they still will put survive/love you.

Very nice comparison! I own the 114060 and the 16610ln and i actually think the aluminum insert of the pre-ceramic is even a bit flashier than the cerachrome insert with its platinum-filled indices. Well, perhaps not really 'flashier', but it has more contrast (between the black and the indices), let me put it that way. If that makes any sense. :) Idk, i love the 6-digit but recently i seem to gravitate more towards the classic Sub. Great channel btw!

The 14060 is a really cool watch that many would love to have in their collection. The problem I see is that you have to pay almost 13,000 for a good one with box and papers. And then when you wear the watch on your wrist, it feels a far cry from that price point. If you were lucky enough to get a 14060 at normal prices, then yes, otherwise no.

Within reason, whatever price you pay for your pre owned, full set Submariner, its money well spent. It will retain its value, and over the years, if its serviced and maintained properly, it will increase in value as well. We would all love to be able to walk into our AD, like you could back in the 1980s, and buy a new Submariner at list price, but those days are long gone. ALL Submariners, both vintage pre ceramic, and current models, will be deemed iconic watches, dream watches for most of us, but you will never lose money owning any Submariner.

Maybe people on the less knowledgeable forums call these out as fakes cause they don't look quite right. The 124060 (2020-present) which you also have is the 41mm case, and back to the narrower looking lugs.

For those of you on the fence between a 14060 and a 14060m, I can confirm (as an owner) that the 14060 keeps incredible time even though it’s 3000 calibre movement is not “superlative chronometer” certified. I don’t think it’s worth it to spend extra money to get the “m” as you’ll be more than satisfied with the 3000 calibre work horse movement and it’s +\- 2 seconds a day. Additionally, all 14060’s have two lines of text on the dial whereas “m’s” often have four lines of text, which ruins the perfect symmetry the 14060 is known for.

I specifically bought the M for the 4 lines of text. I know it's not perfectly symmetrical, but that's ok, I prefer asymmetry and a slightly "busier" dial. In fact, photographers know that perfect symmetry is usually not as pleasing the eye, so they use the rule of thirds. Plus 4 lines gives it a more technical tool-like feel in my opinion.

Helpful review, however you're using the word "predecessor" incorrectly. The 14060M is not the "predecessor" but, rather, the 'successor', to the 14060; and, the 14060 is not the "predecessor" but, rather, the 'successor' to the 5513. On the other hand, the 5513 is the 'predecessor' to the 14060, and the latter is the 'predecessor' to the 14060M. For future reference, 'predecessor' means 'came before'; successor means succeeded or 'came after'.

I think both are great watches, and both are flashy. I bought 41mm because it’s my son’s birth year watch. For myself I bought the Tudor BB 58. Another great watch.

The current market price for the 14060m cannot justify hollow endlinks and stamped clasp for me... overall just feel cheap compared to modern Rolex, heck even the much cheaper BB58 feels better made on the wrist.

You could make an argument for the collectibility of the sub, but still not enough to justify the price

So what about a 5513, 5510 or even a MilSub then? I think this argument is missing the point. The 14060 in my eyes is the last true Submariner and probably the perfect blend of vintage and wearability. It will continue to rise in price as its forebears already have shown impressively - and absolutely rightly so.

The 14060m is 39.5mm and thinner, and the bracelet feels perfect to me. So the "upgrades" of the new models are actually downgrades, for me at least.

I just bought a 41mm clone as a travel watch now that my 2006 14060M was increased in value over the years and I don't want to be wearing it in Italy in particular. While I have a relatively smaller wrist size I think the clone may actually be more comfortable. So who knows, I may actually be putting my name on the list to get one of the latest model no date Submariners. Does that surprise me - yes ! ! !

I don't think there's any argument that the 41 is technically a better watch. But that's where it ends for me. The vintage vibe of the 39.5 wears better in my opinion. But to each their own.
