Roland SE-02 part 1: My 1st look at this great sounding mono synth

After a few months break due to life, it's time for another video and another synth as well: the Roland Boutique SE-02. I got this a few weeks ago, but now taking a closer look at it. Replicating the Moog Minimoog Model D from the early 70s, this little monster sounds really good. It is the only analog synth in the boutique series and the rest are digital recreations of different synths. Of course there are a lot more then the 2 I mention (the JP-08 based on the Jupiter-8 and the JX-03 based on the JX-3P), but these two I have had for a few years already. I have a Behringer Poly D, a 4-voice polyphonic recreation of the Minimoog Model D with some nice additions, but I missed the ability to save patches on that great little analog synth, making it really hard to use it in a live environment. When the SE-02 was listen on a 2ndhand market place, I could not resist it, since the main reason was 384 patches memory and another 128 for user patches. So here we go, my first testrun with the SE-02. Enjoy!
If you want to see a more thorough demo and listen to more patches from this little synth, please comment and like.

No, it’s not really a Moog clone but having previously owned a MiniMoog I absolutely know that it is close enough that nobody will ever know the difference if you have a clue about sound design (and it sounds like you do). Plus the SE holds 128 patches, 128 sequences, 16 songs and the Moog holds…let’s see….oh, yeah….ZERO!!! And I have money left over for more very cool synth stuff. Congrats on getting an awesome analog mono synth!!

Thanks! Reflects my feelings pretty much! I've been playing around with a Poly D for a while, and although I like it a lot, I miss the functionality for saving patches. And I've also played around with a JP-08, so when the SE-02 was up for grabs together with a KM-25 keyboard (which is pretty limited both in number of keys and playability) I could not resist. Happy so far with it, but still learning the SE-02. And I actually thought of selling off the keyboard, but now when I've gotten used to it I may keep it. Btw, the SE-02 holds 4 x 128 patches, making it very versatile for live use!

Yeah…what I meant was 128 user patches. That little KM isn’t the greatest but it really comes in handy when you want total portability (except for the SE needing AC to DC power) I have the JX-03 Boutique and I really like it too. I think that the Roland boutique series is great and gets a bad rap. Who cares about tiny knobs in a world that has a Moog Model D in their pocket on their iPhone?

@@rockhead11 Ah, of course, there are only 128 user patches, true. I've used the KM keyboard at one gig so far and it came pretty handy for slow riffs. I also have the JX-03 (still unexplored) and the JP-08 (which I've been using more and more, especially since I found the chorus. Both are great to used with the Bread and Butter editor web site. True, the knobs are tiny, but I can manage with that. Occasionally hitting the next knob by error is maybe the most annoying thing I've found, but not a show stopper for me. I'm also considering the JU-06A at some point in the future.

I've had mine for going on 4+ years. It's great! I do suggest a Keystep or something with aftertouch, though, as a controller. Also, it's really not a Model D clone - they specifically did not clone it, because it has other elements, like the Roland resonance and Oberheim xmod. If you DO want it to sound more "vintage", keep the output volume low, and also the oscillator volumes Finally, if you end up loving it, see if you can score an ExtBox. They were already more than I wanted to pay when new ($120), but now I think they're up to $199 - if you can even find them. Still, that analog overdrive and 6db HP filter, plus the most amazing cutoff knob (it uses the on-board cutoff as the basis of where it starts), as well as the additional 1/4" output (and input) truly complete the SE-02. I've found the SE-02 to be a wonderful companion to the Elektron Digitone.

Thanks for these insights and hints! Yes, you are correct, although the layout takes a lot from the Model D, there are a lot of additions here. I think if you want portability, patch banks, additional modulation options, this is a good substitute for the real thing, or for any VST (if you are into gear) or for the Behringer Model D (since this has patches making it much more versatile for live use). Having grown up on Rolands (mostly digital) and Korgs in the 90s, and only lately starting to exploring the analog world and the synth sounds of 70s and 80s, I'm really like the sound of the SE-02. At this point I think I'm pretty happy with the 4 x 128 sounds available, and I think it is a nice synth to learn making your own sounds on. Limited enough to learn the basics, but still lots of options to dive into modulation, too, so I will work on my skills for the time being, I think! I will test the more vintage sounding settings. The Extbox is unfamiliar to me, but looks interesting, I will have to check that out on youtube. Much appreciate your comment!

I think the filter resonance behaves like the Moog mini filter, not like a Roland.

Nice demo Bro. Which effects were you playing through? I could hear some chorus and delay..? Thanks

Thanks Sarah! I only used the built in delay of the SE-02. The chorus effect is probably due to oscillators being slightly detuned, since I use no chorus in this video. In the next video I use an effects pedal with choruses, delays and reverbs, and adding stereo effect to some sounds. Check that out! kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4R7t66SkbnHd7Q.html

What a keyboard with the SE-02 Please. ??

Do you mean what keyboard I am using in the video? It is the Roland K-25M keyboard especially designed for the boutique series. But keep in mind it is pretty limited, and keys are not really that good. I recommend a proper keyboard or synth, you connect MIDI out from that to MIDI in on the SE-02 and select the same MIDI channel on both devices and there you!

@@sdorocd2 The K25m is built for the boutiques only. It has a special connection fitting boutiques only. The good thing about the K25M is that you can tilt the synth in 2 or 3 angles to fit your preferences. Any keyboard having a MIDI out works with the boutiques, i.e M-audio Oxugen, Akai MPK or Roland's A series controllers.
