My 2 cents: The Roland SE-02 might be one of these underestimated synths that I definitely recommend to check out. Yes, the potis are quite small and the sequencer is a bit counterintuitive. But you’ll get quite a huge sound. The SE-02 is like a modern and slightly more aggressive Moog - interesting sound design options such as Crossmod and preset storage. Especially the latter is super useful when performing live or in a modern DAW-based studio. Second hand these usually go for 350 € and even new the SE-02 isn’t too expensive. Definitely worth a closer look.

I love this synth! The only thing I would say to people is maybe pair it with a cheap bass EQ pedal to add some makeup in the low end, the filter gets a bit greedy at high resonance. Oh and there is an analog control jack for the filter too, so its super easy to DIY a big filter knob for live

yep I have one. Def a keeper. I dont like how the behringer moogs don't have patch memory so this was perfect for me. Im also a roland fanboy and I also love SE.

When you started playing more with the cross mod, I really perked my ears. Haven’t heard timbres like that since the Virus. Not that this would replace a virus, but it’s ability to from Moog to acid to some dirty x-mod sounds gives it a large palette indeed!

Incredible tones

Top notch demo as expected. Preset storage is a big plus against the Poly D. Howerer, the small form factor and the very tiny knobs do not bring fun to tweak them. My favorite knobs, btw, are the ones on the Sub37.

Hi, I've decided to let the SE-02 go without releasing a sound pack after quite a while. It is a great synth but the small potis and (in my case) not working editors eventually were too annoying.

Had one since 2018 (I think) and there's only one synth that would replace it for me: the SE-3X. I find the sequencer pretty intuitive, myself, but perhaps that's because it was my first hardware synth. It's not so different from the Digitone I have - though clearly a lot more basic. I've also had the ExtBox since the same year, and it really completes the synth, with a 100% analog LP filter adjustment, overdrive, and HP filter, 1/4" IO, and more. The ExtBox was $120 when new. For the total of $520, the combo is one of the best monosynths you can buy for the money, and easily punches up to double that. There's few in the price range that even compare, sonically (e.g., DB-01) but they lack to overall package. Knobs have never bothered me - they're fine, and 98% of every function can be mapped to MIDI controls or controlled via the DAW.
