Roland Fantom G as a MIDI Controller for a DAW (Logic Pro X)

Музыка

The waffle stops at 2:50 A quick run-down of how I use my Fantom G to occasionally control the transport functions in my DAW, which is Logic Pro. Also a quick look at using the Fantom hardware controls to manage VST controls in Kontakt.
I prefer to use a dedicated MIDI controller like a Korg NanoKontrol or Novation Zero SL Mk II for this kind of thing but a couple of people in the Facebook Fantom Users Group have asked about using their Fantom G to control their DAW software so this is response to those questions.

    Hi Neil, I can't seem to get my Roland Fantom G6 to work with Logic.. Let alone be seen by my mac as a midi controller... Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've downloaded the driver for 10.9 (I'm still on 1.9.5) I've installed the librarian thing, I even installed the hardware onto the Fantom itself.. Is there something I'm missing? I really hope you can help me out..

    Thanks Argon. You've got me there - I've never tried! It would be logical to have that in system settings, perhaps along with the screensaver functions, but I can't see it there. Roland Clan seems to be failing at the moment (SQL error) so no joy there. I'll keep looking into it :)

    5 pin DIN will definitely work to send MIDI to your DAW regardless of operating system. The USB connectivity I can't comment on as I've not tried it with any Mac OS later than Mavericks. To fully answer your question I'd need to know exactly what you wanted to do - i.e. editor/librarian functions? But for straight recording Big MIDi cables without USB are fine. MIDI to USB convertor would also be fine if you had that converters drivers for your OS.

    How do you make all the sounds on roland phantom go onto logic pro so you can play the instruments that's on the phantom onto logic pro? Let me know thanks

  • @NeilWall

    @NeilWall

    6 жыл бұрын

    You create an EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT track (MIDI track) in logic and point that at the Fantom. The sounds will not exist in Logic - only the performance that you record that then plays the Fantom for you each time you play the sequence. Alternatively you can record the audio of the Fantom direct to an audio track.

    Cool, do you have a video on how to do this successfully? Also, I really hate that editor librarian software. It slows my computer down and is very unstable at times. Do I need this in order for logic x to recognize the Fantom G for setting up other midi functions in Logic X such as synchronation and slave/ master options?@

    +Justin Edsell What is it you'd like to(k)ontrol with the Fantom? If it's Kontakt, then using Live Mode to play both internal and external sounds may be something that interests you (kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqyAx8eNfbDUk7g.html) I can't afford a Kontol, so make do with a KeyLab61 for most of my MIDI control.

    Hi there. It's possible that your Fantom is connected, but not configured to send MIDI (we need the MIDI TX transmit switch for this.) At the left of the pads, 1. press the pad mode button so that it blinks. 2. Now press number 10. 3. Finally press pad number 1 to light it up. This will make your Fantom transmit MIDI data on channel 1. If none of the pads were lit up, it's possible that logic was not receiving any MIDI signals from your Fantom even though you had all the right drivers.

    Not completely synched to the Fantom sequencer - no. Use of the transport controls yes. There are much better and cheaper ways to have hardware transport than to use those in the Fantom (which really function best with the Fantom's sequencer). The video is what it is - sorry you found it limited.

    The Fantom comes with a standard USB Type B cable that will transfer both MIDI and audio to and from your Fantom device and DAW host. you can also get standard 5 pin DIN MIDI cables with either 5pin or USB type A at the other end which can connect to your host. It all depends on what you want to connect your Fantom to.

    So just so I understand correctly. I can simply connect my fantom to my apollo twin quad and use that for my midi controller in protools right?

  • @NeilWall

    @NeilWall

    5 жыл бұрын

    You'd connect the Fantom to the computer with USB and the Fantom audio outs to the apollo. And yes - you could use it as a controller. But the pads will have limited use. You really have a Pitchbend, Modulation, 8 sliders and 4 knobs to send messages to protools with. If you use the pads they wont tend to send standard MIDI messages. I fyou want to just record Fantom Audio you are good to go.

    Neil Wall First, thank you so much for replying back! I really appreciate it. I actually have the X8 model, which is discontinued now I believe and doesn't have a USB connection. So I assume that might change things a bit? Also, after hearing what you said about the pads, I wonder if I would just be better off at this point (15 years later haha) to go ahead and purchase a 61 key midi controller instead? I haven't recorded in almost 10 years and I finally couldn't take it anymore and decided to set up a new home studio. I'm so amazed with all this new technology now. I really hope the new generation appreciates how easy it is to create now and even get your music heard. Would you agree that it might be more beneficial to go ahead and buy a dedicated 61 key midi controller and if so, any you recommend? The M-Audio Code 61 caught my interest, but for some reason it never shows up in any list for top 61 midi keyboards?

  • @NeilWall

    @NeilWall

    5 жыл бұрын

    linop412 Code 61 is OK and has a good reputation. I have an Arturia Keylab 61 but the keybed has been pretty fragile. I also have a NI Komplete Kontrol 61 but they are over priced with limited sliders/knobs. If you wanted to use pads on the Fantom you could program RPS to contain a MIDI event - a tiny bit painful - but it could work. It's the only way I've found to use the Fantom G pads with a DAW or Mainstage. Also, the Apollo is very high end - very cool. You can use the 5 pin DIN MIDI connectors on the X8 by getting a lead that will plug into your USB on the computer - or possibly a thunderbolt adapter if you want to plug into the Apollo. (I'd just plug into the computer..) www.storedj.com.au/m-audio-uno-usb-midi-interface is an example of the lead I'm talking about.

    linop412 Sure - Look into RPS and program a single midi event (Note or CC) into a phrase, then assign that phrase to a pad to get the pads working with the DAW.

    It depends what computer operating system you use. I use a mac. With the latest operating system the old roland drivers no longer work, so I use an audio interface with midi ports to plug a cable to the midi ports on the fantom. This lets me use the midi side of the fantom. The driver no longer works for me. :(

  • @NeilWall

    @NeilWall

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Snickers95 well - it already is. Tell the DAW (in my case logic) to recive MIDI on your interface (in my case a scarlett) rather than from the Fantom. Then press Pad Mode, 10 and Pad mode again to go back to normal. Then, any lit up pad will transmit MIDI on that channel out the back of the Fantom via MIDI cable rather than USB,\. I usually light up just Pad 1 to send MIDI out on Channel 1 to my receiving gear. You can define MIDI CC numbers for the switches and knobs and sliders in the Fantom Menu. The Pads are trickier though so don;lt expect to use it as "Drum Pads" for external drum sounds - only the inbuilt Fantom sounds....
