Roland Fantom - Exploring External MIDI Control

Ойын-сауық

You can control an entire MIDI rig from the Fantom ... and it’s not all that hard!
THE RULES:
1. Discussion is encouraged, but please stay on-topic: If the video is about a particular feature of a device ... discuss that feature, not some other feature you don't like. Off-topic posts may be deleted without notice or recourse, at my sole discretion.
2. Critical, thoughtful commentary is also encouraged. It doesn't have to be all "happy talk" Bickering and overtly hostile posting will be dealt with quickly ... the delete button and ban-hammer are used when necessary.
3. This is an amateur effort. Keep that in mind. Comments about how I should have done something differently are not helpful. If you want to show me how to do it better, please link to YOUR videos where you do so.

This was super helpful! I was a bit confused when I first fired up my Fantom and saw nothing in MIDI Monitor. I followed your video to setup an empty "MIDI only" scene with foot pedals mapped. It's pretty cool, I just got the Fantom and it's amazing how much it can do!

you know, it is such a pleasure to see someone who really understands his instrument, giving clear step by step instructions on how to do something that is by nature, very complicated, however, due to YOUR ability, you have made it uncomplicated. I have wanted to do a similar video using my Motif to control the other keyboards, but have not done so out of laziness...lol..but you have set a bar for me to reach for should I ever..and I would have a great advantage because my oldest son is a digital video editor and would be able to film it at a very high level.....for people like myself, who still use a master keyboard and it's sequencer to control the rig instead of DAW, you have enlightened how to do so for this new Korg keyboard....thank you, and kudos!!!

@@ZTAudio btw: I just also watched your video on basic Zones, and it was equally excellent...problem I have at this point, though with the Roland, is it has some big limitations compared with my Motif: the 32 measure length, for example, and with the Motif , when daisy chaining the sections of the patterns, I can insert a timing or tempo change anywhere in the song, which really comes in handy, not to mention that I can have almost any timing that I want, whereas the Fantom is limited to only two . This sequencer seems set up perfectly for "modern" music, whereas I do primarily older covers from the advent of the BEATLES to the mid 80s or so, as well as jazz and blues. And hey, I like several of Roland's front men , but you CLEARLY convey the information in a manner that assumes the viewer knows NOTHING and needs to understand the basics of basics, something missing in most videos.

revisiting this excellent video ZT, I would just like to add that the only thing you changed on the Korg slave unit, was the MIdi Receive channel....I would like to mention that on many keyboard, you have to go into the System menu, and Midi, and set your slave so that it WILL accept Midi program change data....many times the default state is that it is off to avoid inadvertently changing the sound on a slave unit, however, to do what you have shown in this video, that option must be turned on.

I don't have a Fantom, and somehow, I found myself on your channel. This Fantom is an absolute beast of a machine with all that MIDI workflow, I even wonder if Yamaha is capable of doing this on their Montage/MODX line. Now I want a Fantom, but it costs a kidney. 😢 I hope I can get a Fantom Lite in 2021 (I don't think Roland will do it, but crossing fingers) until then, let me just continue watching your videos on a keyboard I do not have but I'm absolutely in love with.

Hey! I really need your input on something. I want to connect a Fantom XR rack rompler to the Fantom 08, so I can play it using the Fantoms keys. The problem is, almost all other rack romplers have knobs on them to control the cutoff, resonance, attack, & release right on the front panel. So if I want to play a synth and have those controls on the Fantom, I would have to use the menu and scroll to what I want, switch to a different knob to change the value, then go back to the scroll knob, quickly scroll, then switch to a different knob and change the value, and I feel in the moment, I just may over scroll.. and it will be annoying to play synth from a Fantom XR on the Fantom 08. So I was considering just buying a Fantom X6 to have physical knobs, and call it a day. Then I realized.. that the Fantom 08 has a section on the right called "Synth Ctrl".. Can I use that to control the Fantom XR? Do I have to assign any valued? Like for example, here in your video, if you would have reached for the filter knob and turned it or the resonance knob and turned it, or hit LoPass or HighPass, etc, would it have altered the sound of your Korg? If you're unsure, could you possibly test it for me and get back to me? There's no info online about it, and this will be the deciding factor on if I buy a clunky Fantom X6 or am able to just stick with a compact Fantom XR. Thanks in advance! You video was amazingly helpful btw!

hi ! great video. I have a question as someone new to fantom and trying to work it all out ! I managed to get it connected to Logic Pro via usb midi .. I downloaded the 80 classic sounds pack and when I playtime fantom the sounds dont come out in Logic Pro .. when I go to zone edit I see three sounds are lit red INT . when I click them to grey the sounds work. just wondering why the patches would come with INT red active and what it does ? .. so even though its says INT in grey it has to be red to be on ? also in advance there's BOTH again in grey , so does that mean not active until clicked ? all the 80 patches I believe have INT switched on , as many of the defualt fantom factory sounds like homecoming .. so I will have to set INT to off and write each factory patch ? thanks for any light you can shine, ive been googling for hours no luck and the manual doesn't say what INT EXT BOTH does

The Roland Fantom is a very easy to use machine.. I figured out all this controls by just playing with it a few hours. However, something that bothers me a lot, is these capabilities were already present in the older Kurzweil such as the K2500, K2600 and later on k2661. I still have a K2661 which Ive used for many years, with the same exact purpose. I just cant understand why it took so long for other brands to implement a decently flexible midi controller inside their workstations... I still believe the K2661 is a bit more powerful and flexible, and easier to use. It just lacks a better screen and the lovely lit faders

I love this series as I just purchased a Fantom (I saw you comment about this series you did over on PAD channel). I have a MODX that I honestly just don't like... I couldn't really get into it as an instrument and personally did not think the sounds were the quality that it should be if they are the same engine as the $3k Montage. I also couldn't get my head around the Kronos at all, it was so overly complicated and there was not much instruction. I feel with this series I will not have similar problems with the Fantom! I have a quick question (or suggestion for future video)... is there any special integration with other Roland synths? I have a System 8 and it would be awesome if the Fantom automapped controls with their own synth lines. I also have a TR-8S, so any integration with the aira product line would be a huge plus. Have you noticed any integration with your JD-XA that was smoother than it was with your KingKorg?

I like having a second, assignable MIDI out ... which I use exclusively for my JD-XA. I don't use the JD-XA as a multitimbral "module", so it's in "remote keuboard mode". That allows me to play the Fantom keyboard, assign the output to MIDI2 and not worry about what MIDI channels each JD-XA part is assigned to.

Any possibility of giving a guidance about how to simultaneously record all of the Fantom's zones (within one preset) in Logic Pro X as separate MIDI tracks (each zone recorded on a separate MIDI track and playing back through Fantom's sound engine)? Fantom is capable of transmitting each zone as a separate audio and Logic can record the audio coming from each Fantom's zone on a separate dedicated audio track. Can this be done with MIDI? It's easier to edit MIDI (for example quantization) then audio. Looking forward to your future Fantom tutorials. Subscribed.

I know this is an old vid, but this is driving me nuts and I'm wondering if its just me doing something dumb. Lets say I'm recording a EXT midi track in tone slot 5, and I want it to send to midi channel 1. I set this up in the tone editor, shift press the tone 5 button to turn it green, record my track, and all is well. However, as soon as I switch that green button back off, the Fantom starts transmitting that track to channel 5. This behavior happens on all tone slots / tracks. No matter what channel I set the tone editor to TX to, it will always revert back to whatever number the tone / track is. This forces me to make sure I keep the three tones empty in case I want to include my outboards. Its easy enough but irritating. I'd think this is a bug, but surely in the time that the Fantom has been around, I couldn't be the only one to stumble into this. Which leads me to believe its me doing something foolish. In my defense, I'm not sure what I'm doing on this planet. I believe there has been a mistake made there as well.

@@ZTAudio Thank you. That is very good to hear. A midi file obviously consists of multiple tracks, voices, etc. Is there anything you need to do with the zones on the Fantom or any other settings in order for it to respond to the MIDI In port and just play whatever comes in with the correct instruments that change along the way, etc.? Does it automatically choose the General MIDI patch set when it receives input on MIDI in? I will try Cubase and see what happens. I have a Sound Canvas and that plays just fine, but not the Fantom.

I got home and played with it some more. What I found is that if I go into Menu - Zone Edit, as soon as I load a MIDI file, it wipes out all of the zone Type and Bank columns on the tracks that the MIDI file uses. If I then go back and set them to Z-Core and select a Bank, I can play the MIDI file and it works. I can't seem to save this though. Every time I load a new file, I have to go through line by line and set it again. Also, the instruments are all wrong. I thought I saw a General MIDI set in the documentation previously but I can't find it now. Also, I downloaded Reaper, but I can't get it to play at all yet. It acts like it is playing but no sound comes out and it doesn't reset the zones even so I am doing something wrong there. I wish this was easier. Thanks again for your help.

13:35 it's not weird at all since computers are 0 based, that is to say "under the hood" most if not all things (registers, arrays etc...) in a computer start with 0 as the first entry or position.

Hey, loving these videos! I'm wondering if you can try something for me, since I don't have one yet!! Let's say I have a song arranged and in different sections of the song, I want particular zones to switch either on or off. Could this be programmed to happen automatically as the song goes through the arrangement? Hopefully I've explained that well enough!

If I understand you correctly, the Fantom is specifically designed to do that (or something so close I can't tell the difference) from the start.

@@ZTAudio amazing! I'm thinking of a situation where I want to have multiple patches all within the same scene, rather than having to set up five scenes for one song.

Harry S. Hey Harry, I’m curious to know your experience using the Fantom and TR8S combo. Are you going over USB or MIDI? And does the TR8S write into the sequencer of the Fantom? (I’m quite new to MIDI itself).

@@jadigistudios I've had no problem getting MIDI to work in "Generic" mode ... tested on iPhone6, iPhone8+, iPad Mini Gen3 & iPad Air Gen3. My daughter won't let me borrow her 2019 iPad Pro, lol. I didn't expect audio-over-USB to work, as Roland never indicated support for that feature. That's disappointing, but not a show-stopper. The MODX is handier to physically connect ... one cable for both MIDI & audio, However, I find the MODX fiddly and inflexible to configure. I'll likely end up doing videos on both. I am waiting for the MODX OS 2.0 update coming on October 24th, before doing a full eval of the MODX.

You can plug "class compliant" devices in to the USB device ports. MIDI Controllers work, but I am reasonably certain that monitors are not supported.
