This CY-5 pad is clearly broken. One of its 2 triggers is not working anymore.
After removing the pad, we figured out that the connector is loose.
We removed all screws to dissemble the rubber cover. There are still 2 screws left which keep the board in place. Another evidence for the broken jack is the crack in the yellow glue. The little flat cable needed to be disconnected. We opened the grey lock and pulled out the cable.
And there is our problem, a broken solder joint. Fortunately for us, the electric board is not damaged and we could easily re-solder the part.
After fixing the board, we screwed everything together and filled the crack with superglue.
We attached the rubber cover and tightened the screws really carefully to not compress the rubber.
We mounted the pad and connected the cable. Time for the first test. As you can hear, the trigger works again and the pad is fully functional again.
There are many reasons why an e-cymbal is not working anymore.
-broken or disconnected trigger
-broken jack
-broken cables

Guys, can I send you a beer? My Cy-5 has been broken for weeks and I practiced without the sound. I was just about to order a used one, when I found this video. Pulled out the old soldering iron, waited for two minutes for it to be hot, held it to the broken contact, and it's working again. Took 5 minutes. Awesome video. Again, you should add a button here "pay me a beer" or something like that, I'd totally donate a few bucks for this!

Thanks, but the channel is not active anymore, so I do not feel good about accepting docations. But appreciate your offer.
Great video, your tear down of the cymbal helped me figure out what was wrong with my CY-5 and fix it. Saved me a few bucks, thanks!
The video is exactly what I was looking for, thank you very much. The hi hat cymbal of my td1 dmk drum does not work from time to time or its sensitivity decreases. I thought there was a break in the jack cable, I was wrong
Thank you for this video! I have exactly the same problem
Exactly my issue ! Thanks so much.
Thansk for the video! I have a issue with my crash cymbal CY-12C. The green sticky sensor is broken. Do you know where can I find this spare part?
I have the same kit with the cy-5 cymbals. I’ve never been able to get the choke feature to work. Any ideas?
Looks simple enough, going to try that now! Got to say, I really like your accent. Makes otherwise boring subject more entertaining.

Yes, works like new
Im having the same issue, but my circuit board looks fine. What else could it be aside from moisture?
Nice TIP, Thanks, Aca
Hi, what is the name of the electric board and what is supposed it does?
Can you do a repair vidoeo for the CY8?
Please solder ALL the pins if you re-solder the jack. And do not let the soldering iron burn the flux off. It is highly recommended to remove the old tin because it's probably unleaded. The soldering iron tip and soldering wire must be put together and then after one or two seconds immediately remove both together. If the solder doesn't melt in two seconds, the tip is too cold. And the most importantly, use leaded 60/40 soldering wire, not unleaded. I have 50 yrs of experience in servicing electronics.

Thanks, but it works:)
I need help since my Cy-5 doesn't detect the Rim, could you help me?
This works for me, Thanks
I guess I have the same problem, there is a lot of misfiring going on with my CY-5
The sound from my ride is getting mixed with my Tom and I don’t know why? Do you?
This seems to be a problem with the cy5 series. A used one I bought had this issue, but the back was so badly damaged it couldn't be soldered. Thankfully I contacted Roland and they sold me a replacement board and back for just ten dollars shipped, which fixed my cy5.

+Chris Leathco That is rally nice from Roland.
Super clip ...thanx !!!
This looks to be the problem with my Alesis cymbals. They connected the jack to the board with only a zip tie lol, no wonder the solder came loose.
and if the rim fails? how could I fix this? ... Thanks for your videos are a great addition

It could be the solder joint, the cable for the other piezo could be loose or the jack pluck is broken. Maybe even the cable. But it is mostly simple to fix it. This video is only an example on how easy it is to fix a e-cymbal.
so simple, thanks so much... :)
I have this problem with my CY-8 cymbal. None of the solder joints are broken and reflowing the joints did nothing. I believe the jack is faulty. Any idea where I can get a new input jack? The board is the same as a PD-8.

Hi and thanks for the video. I have a CY-5 pad and it's been double triggering the sound when I hit it on the rim. Do you have any ideas of what happened? Thank you!

Hi, I would have to figure it out. Cannot really say what it is. Maybe open it and check it connectors and cables are ok.

I have the same problem, it drives me mad when it double triggers. it became worse lately. I made a quick fix now but couldn't test it carefully. I opened the cymbal just like in the video and it appeared that the circuit board was loose. i tightened the 2 screws of the circuit board and glued the edges of the connector soundly. Also the soft plastic cover of the cymbal ( the part you hit with the sticks) was loose too. i glued the parts of the cover which were exposed. it seems to work ok now i'll let you know if it double triggers again.
My CY-5 Cymbal has the same issue. However, i'm not sure what the cause is. I took the back off and i'm not sure what to look for regarding whether the soldering joint is damaged. How do you know if the soldering joint is damaged? If someone can get back to me that would be great!

Having problems with the choking system in my Cy-5 cymbals. What can i do?

I’m having issues with the choke feature also. It just doesn’t work. Were you ever able to fix your problem?
Maybe this is the solution to my problem. I have a Roland TD-8 molule. As you know, this module has a double instrument input for the bass drum. If I connect the jack all the way in that input, it do not work. It only works at the half way. I solved this problem by changing the polarity of the cable but I still can't connect a second instrument. I will check the module from inside to fix it like the way in this video. Thanx by the way...

+Dimitris Yiovis A polarity change will not help. It seems like the input is just gone. It is just loose if you are lucky. I might be possible that you have to replace it. Check Fullcompass for the spare part or call Roland.

This is a very accurate error description. There are probably 50 different e-drum bass pads out there and 10 issues they can have. So I have to guess out of 500 scenarios:D
I bought a TD1K kit 1 year ago and I am kinda having the same problem. The cymbals sounds like when you hit a cymbal in the top next to the bell, so you dont get full power on the hit. Do you guys think its the same cause as in this video? IMO this wasnt supposed to happen since I bought it only 1 year ago... :(

My rubber top cover is loose and it makes extra sound, or makes diferent sounds when I hit it. Its confusing. Do you think I can repair it? Thank you very much. Danke!

You can! You fold it back, use sandpaper to grind the surface and either spray clue or super glue to put it back on.

Samuel Sinn did you ever find one? I need a replacement and Roland won't sell them.
Both of my zones work, but they aren't responsive at times and it seems I have to hit kinda hard to get a sound. Will this same method do the trick?

This could relate to the piezos . Maybe they are loose or just old and become weak.

So I opened up the cymbal and the red wire is disconnected. How can I reconnect it if I don't have the soldering stuff?

Not really. Soldering is the only option.

Thanks for all your helpful videos, but there _is_ a good solution available! @ Samuel Kajah - I would suggest using "Conductive glue", a glue that conducts electricity, Not good for power circuits, but these piezo sensors are very high impedance indeed, very low current. So conductive glue is ideal. See: www.amazon.co.uk/Silver-Conductive-Electrically-Repair-New-Asiproper/dp/B07BRQTV88/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1539942775&sr=8-4&keywords=conductive+glue+electrical
Thanks haha
Does anyone know how to fix self-choking on a CY-5? There are lots of videos for how to fix this on KZread for other Roland cymbals, but those methods don't work on the CY-5. The cause is the same: rubber debris builds up on the sensor after years of use and causes the cymbal to self choke. The solution for other cymbals is to peel back the rubber and remove the debris, but unfortunately this doesn't work with the CY-5 - the rubber is glued on for some reason, whereas with other models it fits into a groove and can be easily removed / put back in place. Does anyone know of a solution to this?

Johann Kwan I did find one short term fix that actually works pretty good! I took a strong clip from my office, for holding files together and whatnot, and placed that on the cymbal. This resolves the self choking but removed the ability to choke, so it's not ideal.. but it's something.

Finally fixed mine. Peeled the rubber back from the top portion just until the edge sensor got exposed. I used a qtip to remove the rubber debris on the sensor.worked perfectly after!

Johann Kwan Awesome man! So you just peeled it back.. did you have to glue the rubber flap back on after?
@johannkwan7817
4 жыл бұрын
Didnt glue it back because i had to clean it again after a few weeks.if you clean the debris and those that are still stuck to the rubber part, you could use some thin double sided tape but i wouldnt recommend glue because if ever you need to troubleshoot again, its gonna be very hard to remove
