I have the black bottom CY-12C model and can confirm that this technique works for it too. It was also not registering harder hits (it was quiet AF). I didn't have nearly the amount of residue/particles as you did in the video but regardless, going over it with a brush fixed it. It stopped choking and it was twice as loud (so to speak) at the same sensitivity setting. Compared to brand new it still seems slightly less sensitive but I just turned up the sensitivity a tad and it's perfect now. The difference is crazy. I can't believe how even the tiniest bit of rubber particles or whatever can mess these cymbals up THIS much. Especially when they are hundreds of dollars. Anyways, THANK YOU for this. I really mean it.

This is excellent advice. I talked to my Roland rep & he suggested a $500 plate. Peeling the rubber back & periodically cleaning fixes auto choke especially found on my Silver Cy14 rubber models, on the top of the frame. Those models are easier to separate just take your time. CY14 Silver isnt glued and is easier to peel the rubber.

Worked perfectly for my CY-15R. Had issues for years with the bell and the ride self-choking intermittently. Feels like new!! Also if your TD-20 LCD screen is lit but only half or none of the text appears buy some WD-40 Contact Cleaner (or something similar), open up the TD-20 module then unclip and clean each connector for the screen's circuit board. It's not as hard as you initially think when taking the back cover off. My set is like brand new now, I wish I did this a few years ago!!!

Somehow it took like 7 years for one of mine to start having this issue, maybe they made them better back when I bought em or maybe I got lucky, I bang the hell out of these Mine was so old and used that I didn't even have to cut the rubber in the main hit area, it was just already mostly crumbled and it peeled right off. Some of the plastic was cracked and I had those rubber pebbles on the inside, I could even see where they were triggering the choke because it rubbed black on the sensor. Works like new again, thanks!
