I understand that changes were made for athlete safety. My gripe, as a fan on site, was that there was zero communication with us as to those changes and location of events. I was especially upset about the record breakers. It was moved, and the time was changed. We fans assumed it would be in the same area the other strongman events were, so we queued there. They were setting something up, I asked three staff members if they were setting up for record breakers and got sarcasm from one and non-answers from the others.

If all the athletes are happy with the way things went then that’s one thing. But if as you say, Rogue are trying to reach a larger audience then the experience for the fans also needs to be taken in to account. And I think it’s clear to say that a lot of fans did not enjoy the experience of watching it as much this year due to a number of issues. Hopefully Rogue listen to the athletes AND fans and improve to make the competition better next year.

And it's mostly because it rained and they had to make quick changes. Nobody in the world can have numerous different options in order to make it the best event. Sure the down calls and the go signal can be better, but that's just expected with strongman rules at this point. It's not a sport with 100% precise rules. I was happy with this competition and I was always happy with what Rogue brought. Audience should have a voice sure, but audience sometimes are just haters and that's not productive at all. In the heat of the moment any person can make mistakes, when it comes to fractions of seconds. Even robots make mistakes. Let's give them a break, cuz they could've just cancel it, if they didn't have a backup plan like the bull.

I understand not biting the hand that feeds you. And on a certain level, I agree, especially because the last 2 years this competition was superb. But even so, this one was a let down. Some problems: - 5(!) events for a 2(!) day show is really low. It was supposed to be six, so that adds insult to injury. - No axle and fingals, fingals may be understandable due to the weather, axle is not. - The last event was underwhelming, just 3 sandbags

Glad to hear your take on this, and congratulations again. Strongman is in the process of exploding out of it's niche into mainstream and that's going to mean some growing pains. I feel like Rogue is working to fuel that growth, engaging with the athletes, rewarding them, and let them test themselves in new and interesting events. Innovation often requires refining and it's important to keep perspective when issuing criticism. I enjoyed watching the events (favorite was rogue-a-coaster) and appreciated the free live stream. That said, there were two things that stood out to me as a years-long fan of the sport - a) I didn't like seeing Trey Mitchell get hurt and I wouldn't mind seeing the Bull tuned back a bit to allow for more finishes. I understand injuries happen when you're pushing yourself that hard, but it seemed like an absolutely brutal event for everyone aside from Mateusz (who could tow a train up a mountain). Add to that the fact that it was world-level talent doing it and I think there's an argument to be made for workshopping it. I'd also be interested to hear if you had any thoughts on improving footing, because it felt like poor traction was a big issue. b) I'd like a more climactic final event. It seemed to be based on the classic Atlas Stones and I feel like Rogue's version pared the event down too much because if you blinked you missed it. Perhaps you'll hate me for suggesting more lifts at the end of a long day, but it seemed like the three bags didn't challenge in the same way as a stones event does. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think Bobby's post on Instagram put it best. Did they hit some speedbumps? Yes. Will they improve? Yes. You are right that Rogue can run the Invitational without strongman, so all feedback needs to be constructive and useful. Just saying 'the Shaw Classic is better' or 'Giants Live is better' doesn't improve anything (and often those comments seem to align with fans who were just disappointed their athlete didn't win), and it did feel like some fans from those two camps were coming in wanting to see Rogue fail. I really hope the backlash doesn't make them get rid of the Iron Bull because it can be an amazing event with a bit of tinkering. In reality the only bad event was the last one, where I think they more than anything just underestimated how far you guys could carry the bags. No axel was disappointing but I'm sure another competition will take the opportunity to get it in soon (wouldn't shock me to see Arnold's bring it in).

This is the same at every competition, saw it at the Arnold with the women's deadlift, they were not locked out, not even close, but got the drop signal anyway. The point is to see who's the best, not hand out a gimme to someone who is "known for deadlifting", but didn't perform on the day. You're only as good as your last performance, if they don't get the lift, they don't get it, simple as.

It’s not like it never rains, and the forecast over a week out was for rain on and off all weekend. I think Rogue should have had plenty of time to come up with a solution that didn’t suck for the people who paid for tickets and travel and hotels to be at the event. Having a truckpull event that works on frictional-resistance is just a bad idea as the performance wont ever be consistent. There's mechanical wear which will change the resistance of the rails over time, but also something like humidity can have a big impact. They should get some wheels under it and make it rolling-resistance based, it will be much more consistent. Mindboggling they made it that way, anyone with a little bit of mechanical understanding would've known that. And also, if there's one way to make a loading race as boring as possible, make it 3 sandbags. Don't do that. It should be ship anchors, washing machines and lawn mowers.

As far as the iron bull goes, to even the field a little just using a longer towing rope would help. As he says when Mateutz is pulling with his hips it moves. Because the tow rope is so short the angle it makes between the shoulders and hips is quite different. Which means that the forward part of the force vector is smaller as well.

It's good to hear the athlete's perspective. I hadn't thought about it before, but I think you're right: In the end the leaderboard didn't show any major upsets. That is one sign of a fair competition. Nevertheless, I have to say that from a viewer's perspective the Rogue Invitational left a few things to be desired. I was honestly kind of shocked, because Rogue have been broadcasting Strongman and Crossfit for many years. I didn't think that the weather (which has been an issue at the CF Games before) could pose such huge problems. Unfortunately, viewers of the livestream were pretty much left in the dark, concerning the changes in schedule for both CF and strongman. Of course, many changes happened on the fly, but still there should have been better communication to the viewers. Especially bad imho is the complete omission of the record breakers. Anyway, thanks for your insight. Congratulations and all the best for recovery and prep for your next goals.

I think an easy change to the Iron Bull to make it a little less miserable is to have metal skis on it and make the rails out of wood. The problem with dragging wood across metal is how the wood deforms. You still get deformation with metal across wood, but it affects the resistance differently and isn't quite as brutal.

The problem with the iron bull is the rig can skew and the sides of the rig can rub on the rail. They talked about that in Brian’s video. Their solution seemed to be some fingered tightened locks that created more friction. IMO they should have done something like a rollercoaster that uses wheels to keep it aligned but won’t add side friction. Does that make sense?

The issue of the sled is specifically an issue of material science (physics matters too obviously). Wood reacts to atmospheric conditions quite rapidly and importantly, in a different way than steel does. Friction, moisture, temperature and many other aspects will change both materials. So yes, it was an issue of technique, yes it was an issue of weight, but also yes - and potentially significantly so - it was an issue of how the materials changed over time, even a short period

good to see your opinion on the event, watching it on YT from the UK reminded me of the early days of strongman when the events were spectacles and not just heavy weights on bars (although there is nothing wrong with that either), i know the bad weather played a huge part in the proceedings, and you know its bad when the stoltmans complain about it! rogues electronics took a major hit which also affected the crossfit, athlete safety has to be paramount, we want to see you guys push the limits of whats physically possible, we dont want you to get hurt doing it, and we dont want to see people get hurt because the equipment isnt safe, rogue are still new to the strongman game, they'll get better each year

The only issue I see is with the iron bull. When you slide wood on metal over and over the wood does get flatter and smoother and stickier especially in the humidity. I vote use plastic or metal to slide on and then add some more weight to make it similarly hard but more consistent for everyone. Great work Hoop I'm glad I got to see your worlds win in person! Hope to make it to more competitions in the future

Really appreciate the video, Mitch. There were a lot of things that happened that were unfortunate with the weather and Trey’s injury that were mostly uncontrollable. I would have loved to see axel and fingals but I understand mitigating injury. I hope, and I am sure, rogue will come up with contingency plans for weather. It happens to WSM as well and we have seen plenty of weather related delays in WSM, but they always seem to figure out a suitable back up. I’m sure rogue will learn from this. My only complaint about the competition was the last event. Over too fast. Would have liked to see all the bags at the start, and only 2 at a time running the event. Think it would have kept things intriguing versus it being over and done with so fast. They were probably trying to get it over before it rained again so I get it. Your log is fine with the down signals you were given. Had the ref not given you the down signal immediately, you would have probably straightened up a bit. Love that you want to work to improve it for your own performance. Attitude like that is why you are a champ. Whiners are going to whine. Nothing you can do will change that. But offering a calm, fact based video with analysis of the video of the events is the best way to go about it. Cheers to you for that. Keep being great, Mitch. Tom is still my guy in the top tier, but I couldn’t ask for a better competitor to be his “adversary.” It’s a win win for me when two of my favs are always battling for first and second. Enjoy your offseason, and have a bud light for me 😊

I'm actually super glad you made this video. You said many of the things I was saying. Especially with starting off on the loading. Having the countdown to the loading gives athletes the chance to anticipate the go, however that anticipation can cause the athlete go too early. That's not the case with the whistle, which is what we see at other strongman events. With whistle, it's pure reaction time, which I personally feel is a bit better. As for the log for reps, I'm also super glad they had the rule for the last rep. I've also been talking about that for about 6 months. With that rule, it takes out the timing for the down signal on the last rep. If the athlete is in process of a rep when the time ends, the athlete is allowed to complete the rep. It's all about effort, if the effort started, let the effort be completed in full. I honestly hope this is adopted in future strongman competitions, and in other events.

@@Testoodope was it implemented correctly? Perhaps not, but I still like the idea of start the effort-complete the effort. Maybe it should be actively pressing it from the shoulders at that point. It just removes that timing pressure on the judge and athlete for the last rep. I similarly don't like the timing on events like keg toss how the time is stopped when the keg hits the ground. The effort of the throw was completed when the keg was released, so that's when time should be calculated.

The issue with new kit is that it needs to be tested and perfected before the comp. From personal experience, testing during the comp leads to issues. They also should’ve changed other events. Drop the sandbag and do the axle inside, for example.

Public attention draws sponsors which in turn brings in more prize money and talent and more money to create even bigger events. So flashy or different events are a must really.

On the rogue-a-coaster, It almost looked like you were just missing a ratchet tooth at the end of every pull. This meant you were spending time and effort only to have it roll back to the previous tooth. It might just be a feel thing to figure out how to stop as soon as it's locked in near the end of your range.

I am a really understanding person and I really liked the whole competition. My only concerns are the events (wsm, rogue etc) that are too close to be timed, judged precisely. Like the wsm's bus pull (that was an utterly bullshit but you were awesome) and here the last event. Judges using stopwatches and the differences not in only hundredth but tenth of a seconds are nonsense. Make them events a little heavier or longer. Keep on going, you are incredible! :)

Its just super sad to see that this pulling event (or any high level vehicle pull like the Arnold Strongman European Truckpull Championship this year) comes down to a question of who accidentially brought the correct shoes to accomodate last minute changes. Anyways, its actually nonsensical to talk about the iron null, because the results would not have been dramatically different, no matter what would have been pulled. But I do not agree about friction not playing a role or making the event continuously harder, yet i wasnt there. Its just the nature of the game: truck pulls tend to get easier the later you start

I think you're absolutely right about the log lockouts from a rules standpoint, but it's one of those things that doesn't sit well from an aesthetics point of view. Strongmen should seriously consider and experiment with trail running shoes for the plane pulls and similar events where traction with the ground is important. Those “nubs” are actually called lugs and the outsoles of trail running shoes have very tacky rubber (some partner with Continental tire company or Vibram which are both very sticky). Additionally, they have good lockdowns and won’t fall off like the one competitor had and they are lighter than boots that don’t have lugs. Look into like a hoka speedgoat or Salomon shoes or Nike Wildhorse.

The bull is a really cool apparatus but it needs a few adjustments like people have been saying. I think the tie point should be raised and there should be some sort of guidance on the rail so it doesn't wedge itself on the rails. I don't think going metal on metal is necessary. Rogue always builds some crazy gear and I love seeing another player in the Strongman scene.

To Mitchell it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that the physics would change during the course of the event of the Iron Bull. His resume doesn't state he is a physics expert, neither am I. But the concept of friction can't be overlooked in this regard. Guessing won't make you any wiser either. Rogue could definitely keep the event, but instead of making it this bad they could make it great. I am a bit disappointed with the coverage this year. Not seeing the final results and a podium, not seeing the record breakers either, as well as cancelling an event. Your performance was amazing though Mitch! Congrats! 💪

Not only did I enjoy watching the Strongman events, but I would love to see them expand to include Strongwomen as well. Just as there is male and female competitions for the "crossfit" portions, I would like to see the same in the Strongman portion. Was the rope on the bull a late addition? Would it have been better without the rope, keeping the body in more of a lower crawl? The even starts and stops could be overcome by an electric pad that starts when the hand comes off and stops when the hand comes back on at the end. It would not matter if someone started a bit early.

Rogue should be able to check the consistency of the bull with a force gauge and a then just use a winch to pull it a couple of dozen times and compare the distance travelled to the peak and average force used. Seeing the footage with Brian pre-meet, it was obvious this had not been done. I suspect it will be next year so if there are any questions around the consistency between athletes, they'll have the answers.

As much as this year was disappointing, for many reasons, too many people I've seen online seem to have recency bias and forget how good the shows were to watch in the years prior to this. The judging criticisms are just dumb because we (the audience) aren't even told what the rules are. Also, absolutely agree with your analysis of the bull pull. I don't think the material changes so much in half an hour that significantly. I think if the rope was attached higher on the implement it would have been better.
