RODE smartLav+ and Zoom H1

The question I get the most about the RODE smartLav+ lavalier microphone is whether you can record with it into an audio recorder like the Zoom H1. In this episode we look and how you can do that.

    I'm shooting tomorrow and want to buy three units of this mic tonight to use in my Zoom H6 XLR ports. If I just plug it into my Rode 3.5mm to XLR adapter, will that work? Or do I need the SC3 adapter as well? Thanks and fantastic review!

    Hey Jared, no, unfortunately I don't think the smartLav+ will adapt to XLR because it uses plugin power (3-5 volts) instead of phantom power like xlr mics (48 volts in most cases). If you're recording multiple lav mics into a Zoom H6, you'll need XLR based mics. The two XLR based lavaliers I am familiar with are the Audio Technica AT899 (amzn.to/1t5UPPF) and the HMNSound Microlav (but you cannot get that quickly as it ships from Thailand). I have also heard good things about the RODE Lavalier (amzn.to/1wgcjrB). There are lots of other options but those are the XLR based lavaliers with which I have experience and own and like.

    I've just recently bought a SmartLav+. In order to get it to work with the Zoom H6, I also needed the Rode SC3 cable (TRRS to TRS). Plug the Lav+ into the grey TRRS end of the SC3 cable, plug the black TRS end into the port on the side of the XY mic on the H6, and turn on Plugin Power within the "Input/Output" mic menu. Works like a charm. The XY mic doesn't work, however I wanted to use the main XLR/TRS inputs on the H6, but this doesn't work - Lav+ into SC3 into TRS 3.5mm-to-1/4" converter). I think it has something to do with inline versus phantom power. Curtis Judd Thanks for the videos, they're rather informative, well shot, great audio, and great presentation too. Subscribed.

    As a new KZreadr, I Picked up the SmartLav+ today. I love that it's compatible with the Zoom H1 if I want to go that route too. Hats off to iPhone's sound quality, it's actually not horrible and it's even reasonably good at isolating voice over ambient noise... BUT, it cannot compete with the SmartLav+ especially at an $80 investment which is reasonable for a semi-professional piece of equipment. Thanks CURTIS!

    Hi Curtis, I purchased a J044 earlier this year through your link because of your great review. I didn't know whether it'd be more helpful to post my question here or on the 2 Mics, 1 Phone video, but here it is: Is there a way to hookup 2 lav mics such as the j044 to the zoom H1 so that I can record 2 people into the same file? Thanks!

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Evan Brand Hi Evan, good question. Yes, it should technically be possible with the right kind of adapter but all of the "splitters" I've seen out there are wired for headphones (so that two people can listen to the same output). That might work as well, but it would probably record both microphones to both channels so you wouldn't have isolated tracks (left for mic 1, right for mic 2). Does anybody out there know (short of wiring and soldering your own cable)?

    Hey Curtis, I have an H1, and I'm finding that when I bring the .wav files into FCPX the levels are quite low, even with the Zoom's levels set at 50, 60, and even 75. When I click the Auto-Enhance button in FCPX it turns on the loudness setting and puts the level quite high. In one case the loudness was set at 92%. Is that normal? Thanks for such a great channel. Hi Daniel, that is normal. I usually like to leave a bit more headroom while recording to prevent clipping. I'm not sure where your peaks are hitting, but you might be able to increase the input level a bit if they're only hitting around -20dB. I'd feel pretty comfortable increasing the input level until the peaks hit -12dB. Then in post, I loudness normalize like this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gX-HubKrhJjboNI.html

    Curtis, hi! Great video, as usual... Curtis I have to carefully use my budget and I believe that sound is too important even for small projects... so can you please tell me, can this combo be used in such a way, that a talent can walk, talk and sound to be useable? And if I invest on an expensive lavalier (like sanken cos11d) but keep the zoom for recording will the sound be better or the receiver should also be expensive (like Sennheiser etc.)? Thank you for your time.

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi BELTENGROSGR, Yes, this combination will work for "walk and talk" scenarios. As for wireless, that is a very large topic as wireless is far more complex than a simple recorder. But from a practical point of view, yes, I use the Sennheiser EW112p G3 wireless lavalier system with good results. That being said, from an audio quality point of view, you may or may not hear a difference. But the G3 system may hold up better over time and it also has features like a locking plug so that the mic doesn't pop out of the jack during a shoot. But you can get very good results with an H1 and a lavalier. You might find this comparison useful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dY5_1ZOOYaqnaJc.html

    I would first confirm that the smartLav+ works with a phone. Then you know that the mic is good. Then if possible, I'd confirm that the mic input jack on the H1 is working with another microphone. And if those are both good, then you know the issue is the adapter.

    Hi Eli, that's a good thinking-outside-the-box idea! But I'm afraid it wouldn't quite achieve what you're hoping for. The splitter would not disable the mic on the headphones if it has a mic so you'd need earbuds without a mic. But most importantly, the smartLav+ doesn't have a noise cancelling feature so it wouldn't reduce road noise. You'd probably be better off with a good set of earbuds with a noise cancelling mic. Best wishes!

    The quality is about the same when comparing to an iPhone 5S and up. The Zoom H1 can be a useful option if you're shooting a wedding, for example, and you need to put a lav mic on the groom. Most people are more comfortable giving an H1 to someone to wear vs. their phone.

    Thanks so much for the video. I have a little question about recording singing. If I plug this, or any other similar lav mic into my zoom H1, will I receive input from both the lav mic and the onboard zoom H1 mics? I film music and I use the zoom H1 to get a good and balanced recording of the instruments and would love to have an additional lav mic set up to catch the singing. My only concern is if, once plugging in the lav mic, it completely replaces the zoom mics. If so, is there something you could recommend to accomplish recording musical instruments with my zoom H1 and then recording vocals with some kind of lav mic? Thank you so much for all of this information!

  • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions

    @LearnLightAndSoundSessions

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi Brad, thanks! Yes, unfortunately, once you plug an external microphone into the H1, the internal mics are disabled. You might try connecting a lav mic to your camera and use the H1 for your instrument? The trick will be to mix them together which can be tricky since one mic will be much closer to you than the other which can result in phase issues. Ideally you could use a separate dynamic microphone for your vocals and a condenser mic for your instrument both feeding into a recorder with two inputs.

  • @BradB

    @BradB

    Thanks so much for getting back to me! Ok, that's all good to know. You say that it might be tricky to match the audio from the lav(if i have it going through my phone for example) with the audio from my zoom because of phase issues. Phase is something you can remove in final cut pro? Because I think for now, if I buy one of your recommended lav mics that can go into phones, then combined with my zoom I'll have a decent temporary solution for filming in my apartment. Thanks again!

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    7 жыл бұрын

    Phase is more complex than using a plugin to remove it (unfortunately not so simple). The zoom and lav will work. You might get lucky and have no issues at all. Or you may find that the phase interference results in some unpleasantness. In this case it'll come down to luck and how picky you are about sound quality. :)

    Good morning from Australia Curtis! Trying to order my thoughts, as wondering if you can help. So I want some great quality lav mic audio, without resorting to wireless. I have a zoom H1N, and have been looking at tascsm dr10’s. I was hoping for a small form factor for walking interviews/ weddings, so initially I thought a dr10cs with a new Sanken with sennheiser connection would be the best, albeit most expensive, choice. With the sennheiser adapter I can pair it with my other Sanken for wired interviews, and I can record from Sennheiser wireless packs with the tascam if I need. Great. However, now I’m wondering about power requirements for the Sanken. Will the tascam dr10cs/l struggle with its 2v phantom power? I could get the tascam dr10x and use the battery power from my wired Sanken, for slightly larger form factor and maybe much better sound? I would think so but people rave about the dr10l Sanken combo. Thanks for any wisdom you can impart on the subject!

    hey great video! i have been watching all of your videos before i go and spend some money on buying a couple of lavaliers. i am already an audio engineer so my question to you is a shoot out: does the rhode lavalier compare equally to the rhode smartlav +? do you have a video or audio sample demonstrating the audio technica art-3350 after post production? it is a $40 difference per unit that would save me money on this start up project but if the quality is going to be sacrificed that much i know the investment will be worth it. it will be for a youtube mini series. Dean Romo The RODE Lavalier is much more sensitive than the smartLav+ and is less about convenience (recording to a phone) and more about audio quality. The Lavalier has a much richer bass response. Here is a sample of the ATR-3350 after post processing: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dHiJ2axmdcfKaJM.html The ATR-3350 is cheaply built, definitely not in the same league as the RODE mikes. If you go that route, plan to replace them. The cables are particularly thin and long (people tend to trip on them). Thanks!

    +Kenedy Torcatt On the Zoom H6, you need to use the 3.5mm microphone input, not the XLR inputs. Also, in the menu, be sure that the plugin power option is turned on (not phantom power). Good luck!

    Have you compared this setup to a Rode Omni Lav into the H1? Are they the same capsule and wiring? Is the only difference a fixed TRRS rather than the MiCon adapter?

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    +Peter Kent I think they are different capsules as well. They sound slightly different to my ear with the RODE Lavalier having a slightly more open sound than the smartLav+ though they do sound similar - have a RODE lav sound to them.

    Thanks +Curtis Judd, I have noticed their specs are very similar. The biggest difference being the SmartLav+ uses a "Permanently Polarized" element rather than an "Externally Polarized" one, the former supposedly degrade overtime. They don't list a graph of frequency response so that may be different as well, as you say the Omni Lav has a slightly more open sound but the spec would imply their sensitivity, noise and distortion differences are likely unnoticeable; would you agree?

    +Peter Kent The sensitivity of the RODE Lavalier seems quite a lot stronger in my subjective experience. On all other dimensions, they seem very similar.

    i can’t decide if i should get this (but with zoom h1n) or get the tascam dr-10l. i really like everything about the tascam like its lock features and double recording, but this is more versatile with the zoom h1n.

    It is a tough call. The Tascam is more focused. The H1n more general purpose.

    Two questions :) 1) What wave settings do you recommand using on the H1 with a smartlav+ plugged into? 2) Does normalizing the wave files create more noise than leveling it right straight a head? (The problem behind it: I have some talents, who have a big "dynamic" range of loudness. I dont want to clip, but I neither want to have a noticable noise floor. If it wouldnt differ to much, Id like to record with level 40-50 on the H1 and normalize the quite parts.) Question again, but other articulation: What creates a more noticable noisefloor: Level 80 with a quite speaker which is very close to peaking or level 40, but normalized in post? Thanks a lot in advance :)

    +Fionn-Gorilla Hi Fionn: 1) I usually record with the H1 set to wav, 24-bit, 48kHz when I'm using it to record sound for video. 2) I have not issues recording with the H1 as low as 40/100, but don't go below that. At about 38, it applies digital attenuation which will still clip. 40 has produced some surprisingly clean recordings with the right microphone. Usually I don't need to go that low for the smartLav+.

    Thanks for this. I have a Zoom H1 and Rode Smartlav+. Due to the price of the adapter I searched Amazon and located a similar lapel mic plus 3 to 2 ring adapter. No sound gets into my Zoom with either mic uing the connector. Both mics work plugged directly into my iPhone so they ok. Is a special Rode adapter required (I assumed 3 down to two rings would all be the same?) or more worryingly could my Zoom be faulty!

    First you'll need to confirm that your video camera's 3.5mm microphone input provides 3 - 5V plugin power. The smartLav+'s need this power. Then you can use the SC6 to connect the two lavalier microphones, then connect the SC3 to the SC6. Then you'll need a RODE VC1 extension cable from the SC3 to the video camera: amzn.to/2avVYsX Best wishes!

    I wouldn't split more than that. If you get to that point, I would probably start recording to multiple phones and sync in post. These really aren't made to push beyond two mics.

    Great video, Curtis. Thank you. I recently started doing videos for my financial services practice. I have an intro lighting kit (Amazon) and shoot the video using an iPhone 6s which is ok. I own a Zoom H1 but I've actually been recording directly into the iPhone with a Giant Squid Lav. Been thinking about getting the Rode VideoMic but I'm learning that audio is as much about the device used to record the audio as it is the microphone. I plan on subscribing to your channel but I wonder if you can offer any tips on recording better quality audio if I were to keep using my iPhone for video. I have a ton of other questions but I'll leave it at that for now. Great channel!

    Hi Michael, for talking head video, booming a microphone above the talent (40-60 cm from the talents mouth) is my favorite way to mic for audio quality. In the next few weeks we'll have a piece comparing three different shotgun mics from RODE, Saramonic, and Azden. I hope that helps!

  • @MichaelMacco

    +Curtis Judd Thanks for the reply. I just watched the shotgun comparison video and it helps a lot. Thanks. As a follow up, would it be appropriate for me to mic two or three people from above using the same shotgun mic? I'd like to mount it on a c-stand and I'm hoping I don't need to buy 3 mic setups. $$$

  • @curtisjudd

    @curtisjudd

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Michael Macco Hi again Michael, that can be tough unless the three are sitting very close to each other. The shotgun microphones produce better quality because they have narrow pick-up patterns that reject most ambient noise and pick up more of the sound that they're pointed at. The trick with using one mic for 3 people is that the pickup pattern is so narrow that it won't usually pick up all three people unless you have someone moving a boom pole so that the mic is pointed at the person talking. You can move them farther away from the three people so that you can pick up all three, but then it will also pick up a lot more room noise. So it is a tradeoff. If I were filming three people sitting at a table, all on the same side of the table, and was ok with the mic showing in frame, I would use a cardioid large diaphragm condenser mic. The problem with this type of mic is that you'd need to connect it to a computer (for USB models) or to a proper audio recorder or audio interface (for XLR based models). So I suppose first job is to decide how much money you can budget to solve your audio problems, then we can look at options.

    I know it's an old video, but I saw someone do some extensive testing on a number of similar recorders including the H1. If I remember correctly they established that there seems to be a break point on the H1, around an input level of 42 - 41 , meaning if you set your level to 41 the noise floor is significantly lower than that set at 42. I don't recall the numbers though.

    @@curtisjudd It wasn't actually and interesting that you noted someone else had said 37. Now I'm questioning my memory as to whether it was 41 was the maximum before a step rise in noise at 42.
