This video was filmed at Madison Square Garden on June 24th 2010, Jeff’s 66th Birthday. Jeff and Eric Clapton were in the middle of a World Tour together. Mostly because of Eric’s popularity, the two friends played several nights in concert at MSG. Every night Sting appeared on stage to provide the voice to “People Get Ready”. However, this night Rod Stewart came out on stage to celebrate Jeff’s Birthday by singing the song he originally recorded with Jeff 27 years prior to this night. Jeff was totally unaware of this change and it takes him a few seconds to realize that Rod is singing not Sting. He then is overwhelmed with emotion. A great surprise that Rod, Sting, and Eric “cooked” up. RIP Jeff… the guitar wizard!!

No, not expected, but always hoped for... September of 1995, I saw Jeff Beck, with Santana, and Rod Stewart was the headlining act... I hoped and prayed for them to join together for this song, but neither one joined the other to do this song... It just didn’t happen; and yet both played the song in their sets...???? 💔🙁

Charmaine Sims Curtis was so great at distilling the perfect elements together. The idea of the train over Jordan appears in gospels and spirituals prior to this, though, since there were trains really. Curtis just took that imagery to craft one hell of a piece. Deceptive, appearing simple, but you really have to be in control as well as in the groove. I remember one hot bug bitten night a bunch a musicians and folks all decided to be hot and bug bitten around the bandstand on the Common, our only big public park for miles, and folks were just rotating in and out singing or playing, adding verses, morphing one song into another, and I remember a very old spiritual suddenly becoming this, and then becoming Leave it There or something. I think the nuns even rolled over one of their old upright pianos from the old convent across the way. I think I was about eight. Curtis’s work inspired and filled nights like these, God bless him.

Jeff Beck gave Rod Stewart his first big break by recruiting him to be his singer in the first two Jeff Beck Group albums 'Truth' (1968) + 'Beck-O-La' (1969). After that Rod joined up with Faces & then proceeded to launch his legendary solo career.... but it all started with Jeff Beck in 1968.

Rod's in surprisingly good voice here. Great interpretation of a great song, and Beck is incomparable. Perfectly completing the song and Rod's vocal. Damn soulful and smooth.

Agree. Never cared much for Stewart's voice on a lot of his more notable recordings but a song like this is in his sweet spot.

I remember hearing this song when I was younger & seeing the video for it. The guitar playing and the beautiful lyrics really touched me. I can hear Jeff on the heavenly stage right now serenading God & his angels with this song. And they're rightly pleased. Heavens band has grown infinitely with his addition. R.I.P, Jeff Beck

This is a very sweet version. Didja know Hendrix played with Curtis Mayfield a bit before he got famous I swear he picked up some sensibility from Curtis, who played fantastic rythym/lead hybrid style. Jeff of course has done his own thing pretty much, perfect to me. First time I heard this song was the audio only version Jeff and Rod cut when Rod could really tear it up in the 70's. It's amazing, floating around Limewire this is lovely ..
