Ezzard Charles: 83-10-1

    My hats off the Ezzard Charles, who has the heart of lion. I don't know what kept the man on his feat. Most people here don't seem to understand the force of the many vicious body shot he got hit with. You can see the leverage Marciano gets. People terribly underestimate Marciano, who fought many fine defensive fighters, but he threw so MANY powerful punches, so many body shots, that he had no trouble landing. Eventually they took their toll in every other 15 round fight, and even his 10 rounders. You can run but you can't hide. If you look at his record, against his peers he was the greatest. He fought everybody, ducked no one, and never lost. Never came close to losing, except to Roland LaStarza (a very good fighter) in a 10 rounder, which was almost a draw by decision. Destroyed him in the rematch.

    Who gives a rat's ass about who was the greatest heavyweight champ? Why can't we just enjoy this classic bout without the doggerel? These two guys were essentially using each other for heavy bags, giving their all for THE heavyweight championship of the world, and not some fractured (IBO, WBC, etc.) title. Marciano had the unique ability to force the most talented boxers to fight like they were involved in a bareknuckle match from the 1800s.

    As great as Ezzard Charles was, he never showed much of a jab. This cost him against a tremendous pressure fighter like Marciano. Hard fought but well deserved win for the champion.

    Ezzard Charles was perhaps the greatest Light-Heavyweight never to have been allowed near a title fight at that weight. He simply beat everyone. Forced to move up against heavyweights it is remarkable that he was so successful at the bigger weight becoming champ and making lots of defenses. Gave Marciano tough fight, for a man over the hill. More appreciated nowadays but still somewhat under rated.

Marciano had 2-fisted ko power, iron-chin, determination, endless stamina, plus he had underrated speed/skill in which he would fool opponets by making himself look easy to tag; Afterwards, many of them said he was difficult to hit with a clean-shot. And his handspeed was above average on the inside. Ali struggled with some opponents, (who were inferrior to Marciano), he took lightly.

    R.I.P Rocky Marciano BUT ain't NO WAY he's beating Ali, especially a 1966' Ali. SHeeeiiitttt, did yall see Ali Vs Chuvalo 1??? He punched that man endlessly, especially in rounds 7 & 11. Good Lord, just a flurry of punches outta nowhere and he gets faster. Rocky wouldn't even have time to come in and throw those hooks & uppercuts. I just can't see a prime Rocky vs a prime Ali winning. He WILL show heart and every now & then a few body shots and maybe a few hooks if he can dig in Ali's body enough to slow him down in rounds 12 & up.

    Angry Grizzly You are definitely allowed to think that. Even tho I see 1 - 0 rounds rocky will win against the great Muhammad Ali. I mean let’s be totally honest the only fights ever lost were fights he didn’t train for or wasn’t in shape. He would’ve been undefeated if not the lay-ok. Ok, so tell me how you think the fight will go with Rocky’s reach at like 68 inches to Ali’s 80 inch reach?

  • @LiLWooFyWooF

    @LiLWooFyWooF

    Angry Grizzly Ali was overweight at that time as well. 1969 a year before he fought Jerry Quarry. You can still see the flesh on Ali’s ribs in that fight. And even in that you can tell Ali was being gentle with him not using his hooks and right crosses with much power so that fight I can’t even make out as the real one. Now Chuvalo made his kidneys bleed (Although Ali let him hit him there) Ali used that man for target practice. Marciano’s reach is shorter than Chuvalos and Joe Frazier so I definitely don’t see a win-win for him

  • @LiLWooFyWooF

    @LiLWooFyWooF

    4 жыл бұрын

    Angry Grizzly If Ali said that, then he was being modest bc he said he didn’t wanna fight Chuvalo again either and had a rematch in 1972. He never fought Frazier again unless he was in top notch condition, same with Norton. I mean a fast, quick, stronger & brilliant fighter like Ali would definitely win on points if not by TKO in the 7th round. Rocky never fought someone like Ali and if Rocky really fought a top condition Ali then he would’ve been in the post conference interview looking like a welted tomato 🍅 with swollen jaws, cuts and bruises. And IF that fight was really real in 1969, when rocky would pin Ali in the corners EVERYONE knows Ali is not gonna just sit in the corner covering up for 20 seconds without holding behind the neck. Come on! I watched that fight thinking “Why the fuck Ali just letting him bang at the body???” It shouldn’t even look like that till the 13th round when he done slowed down and even THEN he ain’t letting that shit happen. I’m talking bout a 1966 Ali.

I heard ias an amateur he almost lost, he sez He ran outta gas and said he would not let that happen to him again and he trained for 87 rounds for a 15 round fight. He had a specialty made 300 kv heavy bag He hit every day in training. So his punches hurt many fightes badly. He was a small 5'10 184 lb Man but hit a ton.

    Great understanding there, my friend. But such insight is not welcome here among the Rocky sychophants. But your comment is dead on; Rocky's greatest fights were not against prime HW compitition; and Charles was not at his peak performance level -nor any of the name guys Rocky is famous for beating. I see someone places him between 15 and 20 on the ATG p4p list. I think it would be more appropriate to place him between there on the HW ATG list alone. p4p Rock drops way lower. IMO.

    A brutal contest, with Charles, the superb, experienced boxer matched against Marciano, one of the all time great fighters. Charles had an amazingly long and successful fight career. Here, Charles demonstrates guile, ringcraft and movement, whereas Marciano demonstrates raw power and enormous stamina. I think the unanimous decision in favour of Marciano was harsh as I gave Charles seven of the rounds, with two even. These two heavyweights were two of the greatest fighters of this era of boxing.

    These guys weren't just "pro's" back then. They were HONORABLE Men - with dignity & respect. I mean ...just for example! - Marciano beats an already old and quite battered Joe Louis - wins the fight ...and - okay! - SURE he's glad because he wins the fight with JOE LOUIS (...WHO THE HELL WOULDN'T??), but at the same time - 5 minutes after the fight he's already in Joe's restroom and he says to him: "Joe! I really didn't want this fight! ...but, please understand... - I HAD to take it!" - and Louis nods & responds: "I know you had to! ...and it's alright!" ...and they shake hands & remain friends! WHO THE HELL DOES THAT TODAY?? Spitting water in your opponent's face - bad-mouthing and cocky jackasses who fly their mouth only to get beaten down in the first round, fists flying during official pre-match weighing, biting off earlobes & so forth & so forth! Come on! Honestly - I started to get simply BORED by boxing. When all the "action" isn't even on the ring anymore, but in all the BULLSHITS SAID before&after... Damn! I even started re-discovering many "amateur" fights - much more FUN! :)

    Marciano was great but to my opinion jugding the way he threw his punches which were flailing and telegraphic would never have been in the same ring with heavies of the 60s and see the end of the fight as a victor. Liston would have knocked him out cold. Marciano had worked hard in the gym preparing for his fights. He never took any of those fights lightly as did Ali and some others which also includes Johnson. As extremely fit as he was it took the old in the form of Moore and a hasbeen in Walcott to deck him. He was also extended to rounds 9 and 13 to earn himself knock out victories for a man with hardest punch in either hand a granite chin and a rock body.That drives one to the conclusion that he was just a lucky champ with weak opposition.

    I mean these are the late rounds. Charles was an exemplary bob and weave boxer. Not as reliant on it as Ali as he had more pund for pound punching force. But you fight Marciano for this many rounds you start to run out of gas. And the moment he corners you, Rocky will not quit untill you either slip out of range or go down.

    I'll say one thing for Marciano, he had to be one of the finest conditioned fighters ever. He was punching nonstop for all 15 rounds. He had an endless tank of gas. I think he gives any fighter under 200 lbs a very tough contest. It is unfair to put him against a Liston or Cleveland Williams because then size would be too much of a factor. But I think a young 198lb Joe Louis beats Rocky 8 or 9 times out of 10. Better boxer, faster, and devastating puncher. But Marciano would have a puncher's chance and his stamina, chin, and courage would keep in the ballgame for several rounds giving him more of a chance.

    @Jabbing Jack You are forgetting that Rocky was OUT-WEIGHED and OUT-REACHED in more than 70% of the contests he had - YET - he won the VERY MOST OF THEM by a KO-out! Not just Archie Moore or Jersey J. walcott - almost ALL of his contenders not only WEIGHED more, but had a much better reach. ...but there was something in Rocky that wasn't just "numbers" - his STAMINA, PREPARATION, FOCUS, WILL and SHEER - ALMOST "ANIMAL" DETERMINATION would overcome almost every opponent - you just don't meet guys like him anymore in pro-boxing!... MOREOVER - he was NO "LOUD-MOUTH" - he HATED all this "new-business-promotional-shit" that was getting into boxing already at the times of Alì (to tell the truth he didn't even like Alì much) - not because he didn't like his person, but because he thought that you (to put it simply!) - "TALK" ONLY ON and THROUGH the Ring. In nowadays boxing what is most important is "THE SHOW" and NOT the FIGHT itself.

    The issue with Louis is he doesn't fight as good inside or in a crouch. And the way Marciano approaches - low, kinda sideways, leaning back in his stance, sometimes both hands held out in front and ready to block/counter - makes it very difficult to hit him cleany from range and set up strong combinations which was the key to Louis's dominance. A lot of the problems Louis had in his actual fight with Marciano would have held true in a fight during his peak because they were technical issues. Rocky would be a tremendous challenge for Louis in his prime because while his speed and durability were better, stylistically he's not a good match for Rocky.

    The thing is though at the time Marciano was competiting the diviosn was rather weak at the time and the top guys he beat Walcott Louis etc were all past their prime and he never fought a hard hitter either. Re; Ali/Marciano. A peak Ali would have had no trouble beating Rocky, much as I love the Rock. Ali would have been too big and fast working that jab endlessly against a smaller target. Ali's left hook was more dangerous than often recognised and he had a good right hand shot. Forget Ali vs Wepner. Ali didnt even train for that fight and was fat and over weight. Easily able to beat Cooper, just under estimated him and got caught. Peak Foreman would have finished Rocky. Liston was tougher.

    @@GratefulPerson1956 Floyd Mayweather is also undefeated. Does that make him better than Sugar Ray Robinson, Roberto Duran, Ray Leonard or Thomas Hearns? Bill Russell won more NBA championships than anyone. Was he a better player than Michael Jordan? Ali was undefeated when they took his title away. During the time he was champion, no one came close to beating him. He rarely lost a round. When he came back after 3 years away from boxing, he wasn't the same fighter. He never fought in his prime, but he was still good enough to beat a whole new generation of fighters and win back the championship. George Chuvalo fought a lot like Rocky, except he was bigger than Rocky. That's how I see a fight with Rocky vs Ali going. No disrespect to Rocky. He was great. He was strong, tough, determined- and had tremendous willpower. He was undefeated, yes, but if you look at his record, you'll see that early in his career he fought several guys with losing records. Now, to be fair, it wasn't unusual for trainers and managers to spoon feed novice fighters with easy opponents. It was meant to build their confidence. But Ali never fought a guy with a losing record at any time in his career.

Among these men were: 1) Cleveland "Big Cat" Williams; 2) Zoro Folley; 3) Sonny Listen; and 4 Jeff Merritt.
