The fight came off on September 23, 1983, at Richfield Coliseum in Richfield Township, Ohio, about halfway between Dokes' hometown of Akron and the much larger city of Cleveland. It was the last bout in a multi-bout fight card that included an Azumah Nelson knockout victory in two rounds over Puerto Rico's Alberto Collazo; Jeff Malcolm's ten-round decision win over future Aaron Pryor conqueror Bobby Joe Young; a fight between two of former Holmes challengers in which Alfredo Evangelista outpointed Snipes over ten rounds, and future world champion Tim Witherspoon's spectacular first-round knockout win over former title challenger (WBA title, Mike Weaver) James Tillis. Promoted by Don King promotions, the main event was televised in the United States on HBO Boxing.
Coetzee was a two-time loser in title shots, while Dokes was looked on as a young gun destined (perhaps?) to challenge long-time pro Larry Holmes' supremacy in the Heavyweight ranks. Dokes entered the ring by throwing flowers and blowing kisses to the ladies present at the event (a customary thing for him to do before his fights) . Dokes' self-image of the lady killer was reminiscent of Gorgeous George, the wrestler. Coetzee didn't preen or pose but walked to the ring in the more traditional style.
Dokes v. Coetzee was seen as the continuation of the ascension of Michael Dokes into a true Heavyweight star. While he drew in his rematch with Weaver, he had all the markings of a real legitimate Heavyweight titlist. He was fluid, fast and had good power. He looked the part in the post-Ali landscape of jabbing, fleet-footed big men. The flip-side of the angle of the bout was this would likely be the last shot for the South African.
Coetzee, unlike in the Tate and Weaver bouts where he was considered a real threat, was a decided underdog in the odds, as well as in the opinion of the fight crowd. For the first few rounds the script played as it was written, as Dokes flashed his impressive hand speed, and combined head and body shots to keep Coetzee off balance. In the fifth round, however, things changed when Coetzee connected with a right hand to Dokes' jaw, sending the champion to the canvas on one knee. Coetzee's power wasn't a surprise but he had not put Weaver or the soft-chinned Tate down in his prior title-shots.
Unlike in his previous high-profile bouts, Coetzee gained confidence instead of fading. Previously, Coetzee would dominate the early rounds against top opposition, only to 'hit a wall.' He also had been a virtually one-armed fighter, relying almost solely on big right hands (the so-called "Bionic Right," so named because it was so often broken, it was surgically fused as a solid fist, giving Coetzee a supposedly unnaturally powerful punch. While it was indeed broken and operated upon often, it was actually just a repaired hand with no club-like qualities) following left jabs flicked out, but which were used more for mere effect. In this bout, Coetzee threw a great number of left hooks while applying his trademark pressure. Dokes' smooth boxing and speed of hand and foot were not resulting in controlling the bout, and Coetzee was not wearing down.
Dokes began to back up, and while he landed several hooks, Coetzee weathered them. Coetzee struck again in the 10th, hurting Dokes and pinning him against the ropes, raking him with right hands. He connected with another hard right that sent Dokes to the canvas again, this time with his body rolling until he could grab one of the ring's ropes with his right hand glove. Dokes was not able to get up, and Coetzee became the first White boxer in 23 years to win a world Heavyweight title, and the first African ever to win the world Heavyweight title.

Gerrie Coetzee passed away on the 12th of January 2023 and he was permanently send to the canvas by lung cancer, as a quiet soft spoken and well mannered gentle giant, South Africa will miss you my friend. RIP Gerrie

Coetzee was the best of a string of formidable South African heavyweights that that country churned out from the mid 1970s to the early 2000s. They included Coetzee, the Knoetze brothers, Bennie and Kallie, Mike 'The Tank' Schutte (with whom Coetzee had a couple of vicious wars against in the mid 1970s), Johnny Du Plooy, Pierre Coetzer (who fought Frank Bruno, Riddick Bowe and George Foreman), Frans Botha (who fought Michael Moorer, Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs and Lennox Lewis) and Corrie Sanders (who fought Bert Cooper, Ross Puritty, Hasim Rahman and both the famous Klitchko brothers, Wlad imer and Vitali. Unfortunately boxing in South Africa has gone into decline since then, especially heavyweight boxing. I'm happy to report that Coetzee is still very much alive and well and is currently living in the South African province of the Western Cape where he works as a dental technician, sometimes also making appearances in boxing charity events. He is a lovely person and well liked by almost everyone who has the pleasure of meeting him. Peace and love to everyone out there from South Africa!

For some reason I recall him being in the dental field. Maybe it was in Ring magazine. As a 14 year old I bought every boxing magazine that was sold. Didn’t he have surgery on one of his hands so he he had to rely on the other? Bionic left/right? I don’t really remember which.

I think it was his right hand because his right cross was his most devastating weapon and therefore must have born the brunt of the shock force each time he connected with that punch. Coetzee had to fight through intense pain in a lot of his bouts, which affected his performances. After his KO victory over Dokes, Coetzee unsuccessfully chased a fight with Larry Holmes and was inactive for quiet some time as a result. Eventually he was forced to defend his title against the formidable Greg Page who knocked him out in South Africa in 1984. Coetzee was in excrutiating pain (hand trouble) going into the fight and was given a pain killing injection in his dressing room just before the contest was about to begin. It was such a powerful shot that Coetzee actually fell asleep in his dressing room shortly after it was administered! He had to be physically woken up by his handlers in order for the fight to proceed! As a result of this he was easily beaten by Page and he lost his title. After that fight, Coetzee's career went downhill and he retired in 1986 after being starched in a single round by the power punching Brit, Frank Bruno, who went on to fight Mike Tyson and then Oliver McCall from whom he snatched the WBC belt in 1995. Coetzee made a comeback in 1993 but he was way too old and overweight to make it a successful one. He eventually retired in 1997 after a loss to blown up middleweight Iran Barkley. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Coetzee managed to secure a fight with Holmes. I think he would have been defeated by Holmes but I think it would have been a long fight and very similar to the Holmes/Cooney bout. In other words, I think Larry would have beaten Gerrie via a late round TKO. 🥊

Some called him the man with the bionic hand because he had broken his right hand and when it was 'rebuilt' it was stronger. A fighter who many have forgotten but not us.
Best fight of Cotzee,s career.

My personal favourite Coetzee performances were (1) v Dokes, (2) v Stan Ward and (3) v Leon Spinks

Coetzee's nickname was actually the 'Boksburg Bomber'.
RIP Gerrie. You made us proud. I fondly remember your boxing bouts. I was in my early teens and it was early days when TV came to Umtata.

It looked that way prior to this fight. Nobody knew yet of the heavy partying going on. But in '82-early '83 he seemed earmarked to be the one who would eventually take out Holmes if they could get them in the ring. But nobody was in any kind of hurry to unify the championship. Funny how things never change.
I watched this one live on HBO. It was a good matchup of top contenders during a great era for heavyweight boxing. I thought the fight as headed for a TKO win for Dokes when he opened the cut on Coetzee's eye but Gerrie had dynamite in that right hand and got it home again and again until he finished Dokes off. It was an exciting contest. Those were great days for boxing fans.
RIP Gerrie Coetzee That knock out broke Coetzee's hand so bad he had to go for reconstruction surgery in New York within a few days after the fight.

Gerrie Coetzee was greatly underestimated going into this fight if he could have been this focused in all his fight he would have won more.but this was in an era of some really tough heavyweights.

Watching Coetzee I thought I was watching a modern day Rocky Marciano, his style and aggressiveness . The difference is that he did not have the chin or the heart of Rocky to be truly great.

Fast and strong. No great white hope here, he was the real deal. Once saw a picture of his fist, he hit so hard he literally destroyed them and required many operations. Think his only flaw may have been stamina, still a great fighter. RIP Gerrie.

Gerrie wanted to give him a spoorwegklap, but thought better of it.
Coetzee has crazy long reach and quick power! He threw bombs from any direction. Broke his right hand on the knockout punch to end it. Required surgery. Prime of his life, but lost to Weaver in 13th. ✌️
R.I.P. Gerrie. You made us South Africans very proud with your achievements in the boxing ring.
I will *never* forget the exhibition fight between Dokes and Muhammad Ali. Hilarious performance by Ali! He had the crowd laughing the whole time.

Gerrie held a special place in boxing trivia: He fought both the man who won the title with the least amount of time remaining (Weaver KO Tate at 02:15 of the 15th and last round), and the man who won the title with the least amount of time elapsed (Dokes KO Weaver at 60 seconds of the first round).

I was just a kid and Dokes is every bit as good as I remember but Cotzee is much better/faster than i thought or remember. I dont know much about his career but going on what i see in this fight, his weakness woukd be leaving his chin hanging out there to be hit when opponents countered..
Any boxer trying to hit Dokes in the head would have to be exceptionally fast. Dokes was the fastest ducker ever. Intelligent boxers always went at his body and, because his go to move was to duck as soon as his opponents looked ready to throw a fist, they stood a good chance of hitting his nut, if not they could still do some damage instead of just fanning Dokes cool.
Dokes could look good at times and then like this at times. Great quickness, but didn't make it work for him. Terrible defense.

Dokes was beaten by crack cocaine as much as my Coetzee. His balance, timing, and reflexes were garbage in this fight.
Dokes did not train, stated he was cooked up, fought well despite it!!

Yes, he did seem to enjoy the good life of fame and fortune at that time. However, I have my doubts about whether someone who did not train could have been in such a prime physique and would have lasted 10 brutal rounds, still throwing quick hands in that last round. About being coked up, well, we'll just have to take his word for it. What he never uttered though is a congratulation to Coetzee or an admittance that the other fighter was simply superior to him on that occasion. We know it doesn't mean Coetzee was ultimately a finer boxer (he wasn't) but the beauty of any competitive sport is that the underdog has the chance to win. Dokes had the opportunity to be humble in defeat but unfortunately blew it on a list of excuses.
These heavyweights had very soft punches back then … and the flailing arms reminded me of girls fighting at times ! 🤣

Coetzee was one of the hardest hitters in boxing history. He often fought with broken hands after the first round in his matches. For a big guy he had tremendous handspeed, hitting his oponents from a distance. Lennox Lewis had a very similar style, but Coetzee moved much better.

lol Coetzee did NOT punch soft. It may appear like it because he threw them very quick in combinations. But if he hits you flush with a power punch you're in big trouble like Dokes was in this fight.
