    Darin Kasaboski It's the breaks.David Bey was a good fighter, but he was lucky that fight was in Las Vegas, anywhere else Page might have pulled it off, it was a close one, and Page really threw it away, in a sense. Coetzee was an excellent boxer. Only fought the best and beat many of them. These days there is no way you will get a heavyweight champion out of Africa. We had some good heavyweights in Coetzee, Knoetze, Corrie Sanders, Johnny Du Plooy, Pierre Coetzer etc. Since then, there has been nothing. Only other boxer of note in any division, was Brian Mitchell. Since the good 'ol days, boxing is dead in South Africa.

    People kept complaining about Holmes not fighting Page, but when Holmes scrapped the WBC belt in 1983, Holmes next fight was a unification match against Gerrie Coetzee. So Holmes scrapped a 12 round belt for a 15 round belt and tries to unify against Coetzee, but the general public is oblivious to this because you still have people complaining about Holmes not unifying the titles. Well Dokes avoided most of these guys. Dokes was the real dodger. At least Holmes defeated the men who defeated Page, defeated the man who defeated Thomas, defeated the man who defeated Tubbs, defeated the men who defeated Tate, defeated the man who defeated Coetzee, defeated the man who defeated Brouno and the list goes on. Where was the Pinklon Thomas vs Coetzee II since the first fight was a draw and both were champions. I think we need to hold them to the same standards as Holmes. Thomas never talked about unifying with Coetzee. Bottom line, please do not blame Holmes for not unifying the titles. Blame the judge who stopped the Holmes vs Coetzee match.

  • @edmon91

    +Jonathan White I would choose Holmes vs Coetzee than Holmes vs Marvis Frazier, and Page and Tubbs won't be called champions had Larry won the WBA belt, I see no problem for Holmes fighting a 20-0-1 Scott Frank, who drew with Snipes, than a Pinklon Thomas, who would be 21-0-1 at that time and drew with Coetzee, I think Dokes and Thomas were being build up for a later fight with Holmes, but Dokes just doesn't have what it takes to beat Larry and he lost his belt.

    Total BS. Holmes fought Marvis Frazier and Scott Frank AFTER Page was made the #1 Contender by beating Snipes. Holmes was given six months to fight Page and he didn't do it. So, he was stripped and Page was matched with Witherspoon for the vacant title. Holmes was handed the IBF title and then sought a unification fight with WBA Champion Gerrie Coetzee. Bottom line, regardless of who we think would have won, Holmes should have kept his obligation to fight the #1 Contender Greg Page. Clearly, Holmes wanted to fight the less risky Scott Frank and Marvis Frazier. In addition, Holmes never did fight Coetzee and Page beat Coetzee. So Page came out lookng good.

    Greg Page. One of the most disappointing fighters I had seen in my life. If only this guy took training seriously. For a big guy he had good foot work, great jab, power. Never seen him in great shape. I think if he was he might have dominated. He was a good heavy weight, but could have been great. Remember James Broad the contender. Super Heavy. Broad Axe, or by some others Broad Ass. It was a era of over weight fighters. Watched most coming up on ESPN, USA Network or MSG. Used to be a lot of boxing on tv back then.

    joe derocco Holmes would have stopped Coetzee in the 12 round.The only two boxers Cotezee stopped were Spinks and Dokes. Coetzee lost to Snipes whom Holmes stopped. Cotezee also lost to Weaver who Holmes stopped. Holmes vs. Coetzee would have been a more action packed version of Tate vs. Coetzee. Tate didnt hurt Coetzee, but Holmes jab would have cut Coetzee. Holmes was supposed to fight Coetzee back in 1984. Holmes stood against apartheid which no one seems to remember so a promoter was going to have them fight in Vegas. Somehow the fight feel through and Holmes fought James Smith instead but Holmes was trying to unify the IBF and WBA titles.

  • @jonathanwhite1265

    @jonathanwhite1265

    9 жыл бұрын

    joe derocco That is a good question. It depends on when, where, and how long the rounds were. The best time for both guys might have been somewhere around 1980-1981 before Coetzee fought Weaver or after Cooney fought Norton. Coetzee did not have the punch to take out Cooney. If Tate and Weaver, could get past Coetzee without harm then the same with Cooney. Tate and Weaver had suspect chins. Spinks and Dokes both lived reckless lives which followed them in the ring. No excuse because Coetzee did his job. Cooney was stopped by three hall of famers in Holmes, Spinks, and Foreman. So in a 10 round fight in 1980-81, I would say Cooney could W 10. Cooney performed better against Chaplin and Prater although he fought them after Coetzee.

    Bobby, you got that wrong bud. Larry was suppose to fight Coetzee in June of 84 and the fight got pushed back to August and then September because the promoter of the fight, I cant remember his name right off couldn't come up with the money to do the fight. Both Holmes and Coetzee were due to make close to 8 million and the fight was gonna be in Las Vegas. Both Holmes and Coetzee had been paid upfront money that they got to keep. So when the fight fell through Holmes ended up fighting Bonecrusher Smith who was coming off a KO win over Frank Bruno. Greg Page was coming off back to back losses to Tim Witherspoon and David Bey. The only reason he got the shot with Coetzee is because Don King offered it to him and pretty much said you better take it cause you might not get another opportunity. Most of the other fighters in the division at that time didn't wanna go over to South Africa to fight because of Apartheid.

    @@djsugebryant281 Thank You DJ for explaining that. It had been a long time since I couldn't remember every detail. I knew they got upfront money I was thinking it was 3 but I wasn't sure. I knew Holmes was trying to secure a really big payday because the money that Don King was trying to offer Holmes to fight Greg Page was nothing. Something like 2.5 million and Holmes wanted 5 million but he was seeing even bigger numbers with Coetzee and at that time he was figuring on one more big fight/payday and then getting out. So when it fell through he started more or less taking the less risk for the most money in his last few fights. I mean before his later comebacks and such.

    ZION82able quite simple. I don’t know which god you are referring to. But almost any believers have a geographical god, so in that sense you’re an atheist as I. You just need one more to get rid off. But if that imaginary entity is so good and almighty, why all that suffering in the world. The Bible is the most self contradictory book I ever had read ( this goes for all so called holy book) the golden rule is common sense and don’t tell me they have to climb a mountain before they found out about what seems to be a natural thing. But since everyone thinks their is the one and only, they have been killed and fighting for centuries. Why . Besides that, there’s is not the slightest evidence for a god in religious sense. A energy which doesn’t care the slightest about humanity, animals and the earth. So why do this pangburn of incredible wisdom not make every thing good. Because he’s is man made and its a disgrace parents brainwashed their children into such a delusional mind. You will never admit it, but frankly you are a victim of generations of believers. So join us into atheism or agnostic behaviour. I can’t prove god don’t exist, but he ain’t good, almighty that is just to look at the news everyday. Give me the power you claim this thing has and no living thing will ever suffer again. I feel sorry, but it’s time to stop and be humble enough as science and admit we were wrong. The sun does not move around the earth. If we can’t get rid of religion, so let it be a private matter and not a suppressing ideology especially against women. So which god do you believe in and what do you think about all the other gods there have been the last 2000 years. . I don’t think you will go to your priest when you have to be treated for cancer. You will use science. And how come nobody ever had grown a new arm, leg etc. remember he’s is almighty. At least on paper. Just answer which god is the one and only, and please not by quoting from that books.

    @Klause I'm talking about JESUS! He's God! And He loves you! As far as evidence of God, just look in the MIRROR..who made that beautiful person? HE DID! I know that you'll probably say your parents made you, but that's not what I mean..God created man. And man has sinned against Him. We ALL have. Just think, Klaus..how many lies have you told in your life? How many times have you taken His name in vain? Ever stolen? Ever looked at a person to lust after them? If you've ever done any of these things (and we ALL have) then you will stand guilty before a holy God when you die and be sent into hell. But God sent His perfect Son Jesus to the world to suffer and shed His blood to pay for the sins that WE did. And if we put our trust in Jesus and repent (or turn away from) our sins, we'll be taken to heaven when we die. Some theologians call it "THE GREAT EXCHANGE"..God takes away our dirty sins and gives us His Sons perfect holiness! I pray that you'll do this today! Patrick

Start reading Bertrand Russell why I’m not a Christian! Frankly you’re not! You cherry-picking among the horrible things and read the acceptable things. You are able to do that with even Mein Kamp ! I think you should keep your uninformed political opinions to yourself. Whites never genocided black people in South Africa. If you are from South Africa you should know it. Basically you sound uneducated. The genocides which took place were in Rwanda (black on black) and in Zimbabwe where Mugabe's army killed 30 000 people of the NdBele tribe. They were civilians-men, women and children....that is to name only 2 cases of genocide. And yes, babies too. Do you want to know how they did it? Pregnant women were stripped, their bellies sliced open with machetes, the fetuses ripped out of their bodies and crushed under their boots. That's African renaissance for you...but then you are probably not even an African, so why the fuss? The Africans call you black white men. And then this is supposed to be sport,and political opinions do not belong here. That goes for all.. Those 2 boxers treated each other with far more respect than some of the comments here indicate.

    bertellish...You talk all that racist bullshit, but you weren't even in the ring, so fuck do you care? Coetzee would surely have beat your ass any day, just like Page would have. Just like either Klitchko would have too. The best you can do is cheer on your black boxing heroes from your cell phone, so how does that make you so proud? If Klitchko dominates boxing for over a decade or whatever it was, how does that make me a better man? Answer is that it doesn't, but at least I don't live vicariously through others' accomplishment, ya' fake assed buster.
