CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Determined to shed the humiliation brought on by his last fight with Rocky, Apollo (Carl Weathers) instructs his team to do whatever it takes to get Rocky back in the ring.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
By concentrating on character development with this first of several sequels to his Oscar-winning smash Rocky (1976), writer/director Sylvester Stallone earned critical praise that would desert him with the boxing saga's shallower subsequent chapters. Stallone returns as Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia prize fighter enjoying his brief fame after nearly defeating world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). When Rocky is offered lucrative product endorsement opportunities, his limited education and lack of sophistication quickly become an impediment to his future success, causing him embarrassment and his pregnant wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), a great deal of financial concern. Meanwhile, Creed is brooding over his near loss to a fighter he considers an amateur far beneath him and decides to goad a reluctant Rocky into a high-profile rematch. With the family resources dwindling and his pride wounded, Rocky decides that fighting is all he knows and makes the fateful decision to climb back into the ring once more with Creed to vie for the championship belt, despite assurances from all concerned that he will blind himself irreparably.

No contender had "gone the distance" with Apollo, meaning he'd won all title defenses (possibly all of his fights, but "the distance" might mean the full 15 rounds you see in title fights ) by knockout. The film shows scenes from 7 of the 15 rounds (as shown by the Statue of Liberty ring girl). Apollo clearly won 4 of the rounds shown. Round 14 was likely 10-8 for Apollo. Rocky won 3 of the rounds shown(1,2, and 15), and 2 of those were likely 10-8 rounds for Rocky. We don't know what happened in the other rounds. Based on what we saw, the fight was extremely close, likely with a razor thin advantage for Apollo, but the "split decision" was not shocking-- it's boxing. Apollo squeaked out a win, but to him, that's not "beating" him. Like you said, both were warriors.

@@testodude I haven't seen this movie in a hell of a long time but if I remember Apollo didn't take Rocky seriously until it was too late. In the sequel Rocky had more thorough training on top of the ring experience from their first match. Apollo has always been the more skilled and talented fighter and Rocky know this so that's why he accepted Apollo's offer to train him for his match against Clubber Lang in the 3rd Rocky film. Quite a lot to learn from the first 4 films.

@@simonsays6307 Yes, Apollo did sleep on Rocky in the first film. In the second, Rocky's training camp was actually shorter-- he was in the hospital seeing about Adrian for a lot of it. But once he started seriously, he had extra motivation. First time, Rocky fought for "the dream". Second time, he fought for "love". Not original-- that was part of the film promotion. :) I agree Rocky really, really admired Apollo, and was humble about his own talent.

Oh, yes, he did. And he don't have to worry about Rocky Balboa anymore. Apollo is the winner as the Championship Fighter. He won by the split decision. Rocky Balboa the challenger already went the distance with Apollo Creed the Champion boxer.

Kind of different because like rocky said in creed, Apollo was a perfect fighter he did not need to be protected but Apollo was past his prime in this movie so you could say duke knew Apollo was already declining and Apollo would never admit this to himself as evident in rocky 4 as he believe he was in the best shape of his like. Rocky on the other hand was a brawler that could of easily been outboxed and was outboxed in both rocky 1 and 2. He needed to be carried to some degree then Apollo actually taught him to fight in rocky 3

The reason people love Tony Duke so much as a character is that he’s the only real trainer who can see the potential in any fighter. What scared him about Rocky was evident from the first movie when he told Apollo then on three separate occasions that Rocky Balboa was the real deal Occasion 1: when Apollo picked him out the book. Duke: “Nah he’s a southpaw. I don’t want you messin’ around with southpaws. They do everything backwards. Occasion 2: Rocky’s interview in the 🥩 house when he was punching the slabs of 🥩. Duke(with a look of real concern on his face): “Hey champ! You better come look at this boy you gonna fight on TV. Looks like he means business Occasion 3: the fight itself after the 1st round knockdown, the first of which Apollo has ever experienced at Rocky’s hands. Duke (with real concern and urgency): He doesn’t know it’s a damn show! He thinks it’s damn fight! Now finish this bum and let’s go home! End of the 14th round: “You’re bleeding inside champ! I’m gonna stop the fight! Duke was the only one who truly knew from the beginning aside from Adrian that Rocky was a dangerous formidable fighter with something to prove who could be a champion.

Remember that technically the champion does not have to win, he just has to not lose. That is what happen in the first fight, Apollo did not beat Rocky, but he won the decision and held on the the title. But for true champions like Joe Lewis, Ali, Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, its not enough to just hold on. They want to prove each time they are the best in the world, no questions asked. And if there is any doubt in the publics mind, you fight the man again. That is what Apollo was feeling here, he was the same type of champion. You duck no one, you go after whoever the public sees as a legit threat to you. Otherwise you are not really the best, your a con man pretending to be the best.

He was true to his word when he said to Rocky "Apollo was like my son. I raised him." He always wanted what was best for Apollo, and if you notice,Burton's performance gets more and more emotional as the fight in part 2 goes on.,as if he knew Rocky was gonna win and wanted Apollo to be smart and stay away from him. Even in part 1 he wanted him to be careful and take the fight more seriously. Goes to show even a supporting character like himself can be honestly supportive just like Mickey was to Rocky. I love this scene because it highlights Duke's character. He had spent years building Apollo to be the best fighter and he was. Before Rocky, he was undefeated, never knocked down, never even really hurt in the ring. And despite Apollo's skill, Duke always looked out for him, even getting nervous when he was Rocky was a southpaw and punching raw meat. So, the fight happens and Apollo is having fun, wanting to give the crowd a show and Rocky a good payday along with his 15 minutes of fame. Then, Rocky knocks the champ down, in the first round! And even after the ref was distracted by Rocky, Apollo was down for a 9 count. Duke's fears were real; Rocky was the real deal. He was dangerous and unpredictable. Duke orders Apollo to just finish Rocky quick and forget this happened. Apollo, however, was hurt far more in his ego and pride. Some nobody just embarrassed him in front of the world. So, he wanted to punish Rocky and hurt him for daring to think of himself as a contender to Apollo. But, Rocky not only took the punishment but was able to dish it back. Duke was terrified now because he saw that Rocky had the potential to become a big deal, to become a dangerous world champion. After the fight which Apollo won, Duke wanted him to forget this blip on his record. To see Rocky as just some bum who got lucky because Apollo underestimated him and move on to bigger deals. However, Apollo's pride was so damaged and hurt even further by his own supporters turning on him. Sending him bags of hate mail saying that either Rocky should have won or Apollo had the fight fixed for money. Apollo wanted to prove that he was better than Rocky properly, not in some exhibition. Lucky or not, he'd make Rocky pay for what he did. Now, Duke was trying his best to convince Apollo to drop it and let it go. That Rocky was some nobody who got lucky, living off his small piece of fame and was all finished. Apollo was like his son and he wanted to make sure his boy was protected so he tried his best to mend his pride by bigging up Apollo and making Rocky seem like nothing. But then, Apollo asked, "Do you think I beat him?" And Duke couldn't lie. In his unbiased opinion, he didn't believe Apollo deserved the victory by nervously saying that the judges believed he won the fight and that was what mattered. So, he tells Apollo the truth. Rocky wasn't just some bum who was lucky. He was a serious, dangerous fighter with an iron jaw, furious body attacks and a savage left hook. He had the potential to become the next big thing and believed Apollo wanting to beat Rocky down instead of just getting points was a huge mistake because he had the ability to actually beat or badly hurt Apollo. And he begged him to just let it go for his own sake. Apollo was now more hurt because his second father, his best friend and trainer, didn't believe Apollo could just destroy Rocky in a few rounds should he actually try. But, that only motivated him more to prove him wrong. And the second fight, Duke begged him, even more, to just stick and move but Apollo wanted to knock Rocky out and humiliate him. But as we saw, he should have listened to Duke.

Strange that it’s misconstrued that Rocky was beaten badly in the first fight. The decision was “split” meaning one judge had Rocky winning and deserving to be champ. For a split decision the fight had to be close with Apollo getting it just as bad as Rocky.

I loved Carl Weathers portrayal of Apollo Creed, he was classy, intelligenct, articulate, and charismatic. A man driven to be the best fighter in the world. What took that away was Rocky his polar opposite, he became his obsession, but eventually they became the best of friends. Now years later Rocky his most worthy adversary and best friend has taken his son Adonis under his wing, and just like his father before him still carry on his legacy and name CREED.

If Apollo had listened to Duke and forgotten about Rocky, he would've remained Heavyweight Champ. Apollo would've remained the most celebrated fighter of the 70's and 80's and Rocky would probably have gone back to his old life, his fifteen minutes of fame over, and remembered as a footnote in Apollo's career That also means Apollo would probably have been the one to fight Clubber Lang. I'm not sure how that fight would go (he was a bit older, and might've grown a bit complacent, like Rocky did), but if he won, he almost certainly would NOT have been able to take that fateful fight with Ivan Drago (Rocky, after all, had to forfeit his own title to fight Drago), which means Apollo likely would've lived to the present and perhaps gotten to know his son Adonis. One can only imagine how he'd react when young Donnie developed an interest in boxing.

This scene is why most most movies fall on their faces, they pick up a character at a cost of pulling down another. In this 2 minute and 33 second scene, they brought both characters up tremendously. They brought up Rocky toughness and fighting spirit and brought into play Apollo's pride which is usually portrayed as a bad thing. Apollo doesn't want to take other fighters that will yield better pay and more recognition, he wants to be better and take the bad match-up. This is the true side of Apollo, without cameras in his face.

I saw this movie when in a movie theater in Brooklyn, NY when I was 13 years old. The place was packed with about 300 Italian-Americans. They cheered every line Rocky spoke like it was Shakespeare. When this scene happened, and Tony Duke said the words, “And the man kept coming!” Someone yelled out, “That’s because he’s Italian!” The place erupted for what seemed like an eternity. To this day it remains the single greatest movie going experience of my life.
