I guess what everyone missed is that Apollo was secretly training himself for "The Secret Fight" with Rocky. He wanted to fight Rocky at his absolute best with zero excuses. What's powerful is that Apollo ate his pride and reached out to Rocky instead of resenting him or hating him. Rivals becoming allies is always powerful. Brilliant movie minus Thunderlips.

That is a great way of looking at it. Yes he was there to help Rocky and ended up making a friend out of it, but by building up Rocky and training him in his style, he was gonna have that one last fight, and win, lose or draw, he was gonna feel like Rocky at the end of the first one.

Panatella I agree, Panatella. Carl Weathers also revealed to everyone how Apollo was much more than a great fighter. He was a great teacher, too. And in end, the best friend any man could ever hope to have - which made Apollo’s death in the next film all the more sorrowful. Carl Weathers was so great in these films that he made the recent films Creed and Creed II possible. Without his superb acting in the first four Rocky films, the Creed films are inconceivable to me. I could feel his deep presence in both of those recent films. Carl Weathers cannot be credited enough in this regard, I believe. I hope people realize just how important he is to all of these films.

Apollo also thought Drago was an overrated product of Hype and thought he could beat him in an exhibition easy. Thats what his mentality wasn't the same. Rocky couldn't have that attitude because he was coming back from a Ass Kicking Defeat. Had Creed lived maybe then roles would have been reversed and Rocky would have been inspiring Creed in a rematch / comeback. Creed in a way (not in training) was following his advice of "There is no tomorrow" as he was rushing to fight Drago (leaving him little time to train) because he wanted the notoriety of defeating the Soviet. He thought Drago was overrated so was rushing to beat him to add to his legacy before other boxers beat him and exposed him.

@@Kush333Being supportive doesn't mean endless positive thinking. Even Mick told Rocky when he couldn't beat Clubber Lang. "You can't win" was important because it's true. Beating Drago isn't going to bring Apollo back, it isn't going to fix their station. Mick told Rocky to quit in 3 and it brings out the best in Rocky. Adrian draws the line, keeps him in perspective. If he can't defend his ideals on a stairwell he won't defend them in the ring. That's the real battle. ... and deep down, Rocky isn't thinking about the fight. His hand is gripping a towel in his head, wishing he'd thrown it. There's guilt and shame there, alongside the pride and understanding. He should feel all of that - and if he can't make Adrian understand then she's right. If he doesn't confront that, he can't be in that ring. Beating Drago wasn't the aim, winning wasn't important. There's nothing to win. There's no extrinsic gain. There's only more loss. That's just how it is. That's how war is, that's the allegory here. Mutually assured destruction. Support isn't gumdrops and roses, love isn't just a splendored thing you enjoy. It's a savage thing to love someone and if you're giving 100%, it also comes with your criticism, insight and conflicting ideals. You don't grow without that, if you aren't trimming those dangerously high branches near the top you aren't gonna get a tree that reaches that high. You wither slowly and diminish. She wasn't wrong. Adrian's fights are more important than the ones in the rings, because he wins his battles here - not in the ring. The only person he has to prove himself to is Adrian, she puts the screws to him harder than Mick, Apollo or Drago. She yells here, it took 4 movies for her to do that because this one was the most insane of all his fights. There was no sense in it but for deep, deep down. She needed to know it was righteous - and Rocky needed to say the words. This can't be revenge because there's nothing in that. It had to be, "something more". Apollo's death lingered not only as a threat, but as an existential quandary. Rocky's bravado even worried Mick and he could never explain it. Adrian bring fear, doubt and shame right into clear view. If she senses any of that from Rocky she's not happy. It's not just the basis of their relationship, it's the basis of Adrian's life. She loves to see animals given to good homes, to take care of them and see them out in good homes. That's who she is when Rocky meets her and that's who she is now. Still making absolutely certain Rocky understands his own animal. Adrian's fear, uncertainty and doubt match his bravado perfectly. Without Adrian she would not have instilled enough cynicism to train. In 3 Rocky is dangerously close to egotistical. Here's dangerously close here. Right on the edge of hubris. Adrian may be rocked with anxiety but that brings out the best in Rocky. She instills anxiety in him, which slowly becomes a healthy audacity for the both of them. And then you have something more than just support, you have a partner. Rocky's never truly alone anywhere. He knows Adrian is hurting every time he does this. He knows, secretly, she'd be glad if he lost and could be happy. But he has to make it worth the pain for both of them. When he's dazed out of his mind from punches, he knows he can stay down. He knows she's there. He also knows she's watching, aghast as always. It's what makes every scene of her watching better. She comes out to see him, she comes out of all that anxiety to see how he's doing. When he's on the mat, if he's conscious, he's thinking -"I don't want her to worry". It's likely as dumb as that. He's got something to prove, to her, not just to himself. Because his biggest fear in life wasn't dying, it was whether or not she'd ever come out of the pet shop... and if she should have. So he made it worth it. ... Loves a complicated thing, you can't simplify it down. It's a many splendored thing, but it's savage. There's a reason the films without Adrian don't make it. Because love is the only real battle worth fighting. The real battle is here. Who doesn't want to move a mountain to change someone's heart? That's what it takes. Rocky wins these fights when he wins over Adrian. Not later, not in the ring, not in training - he wins here he can win there. And that's the benefit of a healthy relationship. You get to see the future beyojd your own limited perspective. And that is what gives him the tools needed to win. He isn't training to win. He's training to lose harder, longer and better. That's a tiny clipping if the truth, but that's the pruning it takes to find clarity. The last piece is the one that really matters. That's real partnership.

I was always worried in I and II that it was true that Rocky was a story about the white man vs the black man, but I think this training actually reveals something beautiful and dispels that. If it wasn’t for Apollo’s guidance Rocky could never have unlocked his true potential, in fact Apollo is portrayed as the perfect man. Athletic charismatic smart and clearly the most talented boxer in the game, but he helps Rocky because like the entire series it’s about underdogs and their heart, that no matter who we are or where we come from we can become great. Apollo and African Americans were especially underdogs, Pauly who represents the uneducated white American tries to dispel Apollo’s teachings even though they are what end up being the keys to defeating club Lang. They are willing to disregard Paulys ignorance and continue to encourage Rock to overcome. To me that’s beautiful

sad today to see the disrespect for America compared to way it was back then. Apollo was very pro USA as a character. Even the first movie as you say it's about an underdog. Apollo specifically wanted to fight a white guy in Philly for a reason. His theory of anyone, any underdog can make it in America. Compare to victim mindset still in black community today. Loved Apollos Rocky 4 character. Very prideful in America. Talked about its "Us vs Them" in relation to the Russians and political implications of his fight. Apollo while black wasn't a "african american" he was just an American and a great on at that. Then you look at some comments millennial on here butthurt because of Paulies comments on here. No understanding for the character.

After Mickey died Apollo and Duke were the perfect choices to help Rocky train and get ready for his rematch with Lang. I liked how they were helping and teaching Rocky a different way, a different style and a different approach to his rematch. The way Rocky started off with Lang proved that. That wasn't the same Rocky in his 2 fight with Apollo and his first fight with Lang although I will say his first fight with Lang Rocky wasn't all there mentally with what was going on with Mickey but Apollo and Duke helped make Rocky more of a danger to Lang for the rematch.

I love how Apollo was treated in these first three films! It's such a great evolution to becoming an amazing trainer! He may have been the antagonist in the first two films, but he's a good man, an intelligent fighter, a cunning strategist, and an incredible friend! The respect these two have for each other and the level of talent both men possess, and that warrior pride makes them one of the best bromances in cinema!

Very true. I so often hear from others how Rocky 3 is inferior, but I've always felt the opposite. His evolution in 3 is superior. Apollo fundamentally changes Rocky's boxing style to eliminate all that he was lacking before. In 1, 2, and 4, he won mainly through sheer determination and drive, perhaps even luck. Here, he becomes a more worthy champion through change. Awesome point, dude!

This is not true. As many here have noted, this style of fighting would have been deadly against Drago. Appolo lost to Drago with this technique, maybe he didn't take it very seriously against Drago, but he wouldn't have had a chance either way. Drago had more power than Lang and could also box. Duke recognised this and trained Rocky in a technique that was more like the brawler style, but an improved form of it. The technique is always based on who you are fighting. Duke was Appolo's trainer and certainly he was no novice, he knew what he was doing. With Drago, you needed stamina and power, not speed.
