They were ahead of the curve. It's possible they were inspired by the growing popularity of Initial D and the Tokyo Xtreme Racer games from the 90s but the fact remains that they basically predicted how racing games would turn out for the rest of the decade.

It’s a shame Midnight Club 3 & Los Angeles never made it to PC. Especially since MCLA came out in the same year as one of the worst NFS titles, it would’ve been good to have an alternative. Being “square” is a slang term that originated in 1950s America from the beat movement. The beat movement was a counterculture to the explosion of consumerism and the stereotypical nuclear family, encouraging men to sport long hair and beards which were frowned upon at the time. Being square essentially means the same as someone who’s terminally online today calling you an NPC. It means you lack individuality, you’re a cog in the machine, you’re being an oppressed and you don’t even know it. So in that sense, saying “be there or be square” was sort of peer pressuring among the beat movement to encourage members to participate in certain events. Be at the party or you’ve been brainwashed is esssentially how it goes

I have to be real, Dustin calling PS2 launch era games "Boomer Games" got me so tilted. These aren't Atari 2600 or Intellivision games! Sure there are some more antiquated games on PS2 but I think it can be argued the 6th generation of consoles is where the birth of "modern" games happened, sure we've had visual enhancements since then but on a design level, 2000-2005 was when a lot of the standardisation came that's still used today

Someone who doesn't attend is boring. Origin of Be There or Be Square. The idiomatic word square originated between WWII and the 1950s beatnik era. As a poor American, we call a lotta punks or goobers a "square". It's something we all hate being called.

Grew up with MC2 and only played MC1 first time last year but thought it was actually pretty good (but not better obviously). Still, i agree that it has some really rough edges that future installments fortunately flattened out. Stuff like the janky AI and physics, jumping being a dead sentence, steer not re-centering after cornering very neatly if at all (like literally every other game does), chance at softlocking if you dont interact with other racers in a very specific way, very weak nos... It was perhaps for the better that they just focused on what content there already was, and save Tokyo for the bigger, better and more polished sequel. But i still enjoy playing it after growing up with MC2, as i think it has many charms as well. The CTF mode was already fun to play in MC1 and the arcade mode actually has some fun gimmicks too like the meter maid race, the messy race on the aircraft carrier and the insanely hard cop races.

Hope you do a proper video on 2 as well. 2 feels like a music album one experiences by playing the game due to how the game uses the soundtrack. Each rival is given specific songs to associate them and their races with and many of these songs are even given specific mixes that loop a section of the song and sync up to the race countdown. Combine this trance focused soundtrack with the sort of neon aesthetic and you get a fantastic atmosphere for a fast paced racing game. The track design as well is rather interesting, making the player explore pretty much every corner of the map while also having to worry about numerous varied corners, which is difficult but also keeps the AI's rubberbanding under control. 3 and LA's far more straight forward track design results with the AI getting to rubberband with nothing to slow them down at times. But some of 2's tracks have annoyingly slow segments that just ruin the flow. Still 2 overall has some surprising highs but also annoying lows.

This is why I love game industry scene in 2000s, occasionally there's a mid to bad quality game that has potential, and the industry kinda takes a chance on it, resulting in much better sequels that ultimately builds the reputation of the ip. This thing would never happen today. No matter how the quality of the game, if it doesnt sell for like millions of copy, it considered fail, the studio would be forced to shut down, and thats it. There's no room to grow anymore.

Maybe you should do a Midnight Club iceberg like you did for NFS.

GTA Online is basically the replacement for Midnight Club. They are definitely going to do the same with the online aspect of GTA VI. The question is how much they improved it over GTA Online.

Looking back, a lot of well-regarded racing franchises first entries either seem middling or forgettable when looked under a modern lens. For example, besides the first Midnight Club, I feel like the first Burnout fits into this category, litterally every other Burnout game expanded the original premise and scope and became better and more well regarded as a result. Another is the first Gran Turismo. I just can't go back to that one. If I'm feeling nostalgic for a PS1 era GT game, I'm gonna play GT2. The physics feel better, there's more to do, and it's more forgiving while still providing a challenge. And of course, the Need for Speed series. To me, the franchise didn't become iconic until the third entry Hot Pursuit. The first two games I've found to be basic (except the PC version of NFS II) and kinda mid. I understand that they were pioneers in their heyday and I appreciate them for inspiring what we eventually got. But I think I'll just give my thanks from a distance.

The first game was not terrible!! sure, the physic and control input were not the best, but the game had unique atmosphere compared to the sequels!! Do not forget the OST

13:00 @DustinEden I saw you had trouble with the handling, I get it's unintuitive, you're meant to countersteer with the handbrake to recover from a turn since I know handling is the dealmaker or dealbreaker for you, especially KuruHs and friends.

First Midnight Club game doesn't seems to be bad, its a mid quality for a game released for the first year of PS2 in 2000. The unbalanced steering physics, broken jump physics that makes you car flip in the air, chase the rivals to start a race are the main problems, but i have fun with the rest one, especially if you are in split screen multiplayer.
