Rock To Fakie 101 - My Ten Phases In Pursuit Of Rock Fakie Nirvana

Спорт

In this video I’m reflecting on my progress learning the Rock to Fakie. I’ve split this progress into 10 phases.
The Early phases were filmed at Wimbourne Skatepark.
The Indoor footage was filmed at Prevail Skatehouse in Bournemouth.
The Bowl and Pool footage was filmed at Duck Lane Bournemouth and Concrete Waves Newquay.

The greatest piece of advice I received on coming back down fakie is to keep my shoulders completely still and only turn my head when I start back down. Changed my life. Before that I would always lose my balance.

I find Rock To Fakie hands down the most terrifying trick I can comprehend at this stage of my life. My brain just can't seem to get around it. I have managed to do it on a very forgiving micro mini ramp but haven't had the minerals to fully commit doing it on a standard mini ramp. Definitely something I want to address in the near future. Your videos help alot. Thank you!

just keep practicing at some point you will breakthrough that mental wall and have made the trick simpler in your head. I found that just going back and forth on mini ramps or quarter pipes helps me really get comfortable with the ramp before I try say a rock to fakie. Maybe you gotta get more comfortable with the bigger or taller ramp before you just start trying them. Stay rad hope you get them more consistent very soon.

Try looking back into the bowl while coming out of the rock. Sounds silly, but i tried to learn rock to fakie for months before i realized i just wasn’t looking where i was going. When you’re looking forwards at the deck, your body will want to stay up there instead of being ready to come back down the ramp. As soon as i started looking, everything clicked and now i have them down really well.

I stopped falling backward and hurting myself trying rock-to-fakie by putting both my hands in front of me. Then if my front wheels hang, I fall straight down (instead of backward), with my hands helping reagain balance by catching the copping. This technique let me conquer the rock-to-fakie easily. In fact, in the video you quite do it naturally (only with one hand) when you try the advanced technique of touching the copping with the back wheels.

What a study in rock to fakie! Great stuff as always Jon. Will be some time before I'm back to rock to fakies again because of skate injury (collarbone). The though of hanging is too terrifying at the moment. Enjoyed the part in the video where you discovered the "beauty" of the trick, going in all in and out again making that distinct rhythm. Haven't thought of performing the trick like that before, and I want to follow that approach when I take it to the transition again! I'm at phase 3/4 I think. I’d say we’re both sitting somewhere between stage 4 and 5; a bit fudgy and needing more commitment but definitely getting somewhere. Sadly I buggered my knee up the other day (though I did score a Rock n Roll before it got me) so I’ll be out of commission for a couple of weeks. Hopefully I’ll be functioning for our next Just Ramps visit on 28th 😎

I’m learning rock to fakie at the moment too...or at least I was till I fell backwards of A TWO FOOT QUARTER PIPE onto a straight arm and fractured my radial head 🤦‍♂️ No one ever goes through falling off the board backwards down the ramp, but I found some of your slams helpful to come up with a strategy for when I can skate again. I’m surprised you don’t pad up on some of these techniques. You must be pretty hardy because some of your falls look fairly gnarly.

Hey Rab Many thanks for tuning in. I did use pads in the early stages, but I have very limited footage of practicing. There are a few shots in here, but the footage is badly shot and a bit grainy. I went back and performed the early stuff, it was hot and felt confident so didn’t bother with pads. Turns out of those early stages are harder to do than the version I do now? 😂 So I ended up coming a cropper 😂 luckily no damage ?!

Great vid Jon. I'm still in the early stages but do get my front wheels over, just no rock yet. One things that helped me before I was ready to have the wheels over the coping was to do a double tap on the ramp with the front wheels, one on the way up and one on the way back down. Gets you used to the feeling of lifting the front truck up while on the transition. Keep up the good work mate;)

I'm on phase 3 and building it up gently but really struggle to push the board up the copping. That's a general struggle that I didn't have back in the small ramps of the early '90s, to get up on the copping. You gave me a couple of ideas to move what I have to my local bowl which is bigger than where I was practising up to phase 3. The fear is very very real indeed but I'll keep going - my goal is to get a rock n roll, a favourite from back then, on the deep side of my local. Thanks for the video, helpful as always.

I'm in some version of Phase 3. Don't have a bank with coping around here so got an actual piece of plastic pipe that I put on top of the bank. Roll to it, clear the front truck over, then clear again on the way down. If I hit the pipe, no problem, it just rolls so no hang up. Can do that comfortably. Then I go to the quarter pipe and I can't even put the front truck over the coping. My mind plays nasty tricks and I hate it! Funny enough, I was doing Rock & Rolls on that plastic pipe coping before doing Rock to Fakies. I find it more natural to kick turn 180 on top of the bank and roll down regular than fakie... still can't do R&Rs on the quarter pipe!!!!! Thanks for the videos John! Love how you take us through the learning and improving process. Much better a tutorial by some pro-skater explaining the trick as naturally as brushing your teeth. Keep doing them please!

@@ceppm I know exactly what you mean. I practised last week in a park 30min drive from mine and spent a good hour getting my RtF's better and better on this mellow ramp - felt great. 3 or 4 in a row multiple times, woohoo [in John's voice]!! Then yesterday at lunchtime I went to my local bowl which is about a foot (or less) taller than the mellow ramp but with a metal copping and my mind just said NOPE over and over. My new plan is to tighten up my back truck and spend a good 10 mins just rocking back and forth on the bowl before I attempt to get the front truck up. Not sure if it will work but there's only one way to find out.

I've recently built a 3 1/2' miniramp in my backyard, and am currently working on rock to fakie, and I'm not finding issue committing to reentry, but riding fakie is not my strong suite. I've found when I reenter the ramp my front foot (on nose of board) will slip off and I'll do the splits. My hip joint is all messed now from the few should I've taken this way. I'm gonna keep at it though and will have it soon enough. Thanks for the inspiration.

Got the spine last week from watching your vids the spine transfer lines and spine transfer 101. Something that really helped was as you said to pop over the coping and getting onto the rails so I could rock an not get hung up. This led to finding a biting point on the steel pipe and from there learnt pop rock fakie on 3ft then 4 then got the spine all in same day. Can now fakie rock upto the back/front trucks. Also got a cheeky infinite Boardstall with an everything grab, you Videos are defintley helping. Keep it up.

This is exactly what I needed to see! I’m trying to learn how to do this right now and I took a major slam yesterday and ordered hip pads right after 😂still limping this morning, but still determined! This video was really insightful, thank you 🙏 I just got back into skating after a 20+ year hiatus and it’s been kicking my ass 😂 I never learned transition so this is new territory for me. One thing I will note is that I think it’s beneficial to spend a few session’s just cruising around switch/fakie the entire time until it feels natural. I think this will really help build up confidence and strengthen the muscles in the opposite foot for balance at higher speeds. I truly believe this is what is holding me back. So I’m going to test this theory while I allow my hip to heal

A few things you can improve on that trick, and on all type of riding, especially riding backward (/fakie): - front foot should be over the bolts, and perpendicular with the board (not diagonal); - unlock the arms while riding, doing that tricks the arms should never be "attached" with your body; - always look the direction you`re going, if you`re coming down the "rock`n roll", you must look down (that`s why you fall sometimes; - if in doubt, body weight as low as possible (will be lot more stable), you`re riding too stretch; But keep up with this good work. 🙂

Totally with you about how different it’s going to be and agree even the drop in was a million times different , literally everything is like learning all over again where I’m concerned with vert. I think a very quick ride up tap the truck over and back in again without pausing on the rock is going to be the best first attempt option, staying deep inside the ramp and not putting my weight up on top over the coping as that may lead to a hangup or at least a longer fall. So kinda avoiding the full on ‘rock’ until I’ve come to terms with the fakie exit on vert.

Its actually a really easy trick. But I learned that trick in 1991. To be honest there is a ROCK in this trick. Where you get your entire board over the coping and your back wheels lift off the transition and all weight is on the deck. That's were the term rock in rock to fakie comes from. You shouldn't hang up on that trick if you lift up when you re enter, its a mind game trick. I can't believe it's that hard for someone to do. Maybe you should back off the tutorial stuff since you're learning, it puts a false sense of danger in those who might be learning these tricks. Rock to fakie is way easy and you make it sound really scary.

  • @drewfus137

Sure, it's one of the first tricks you should learn on transition, and once you learn anything it gets "easy", but to say it's not scary is bogus. As evidenced in John's video, he took some hard slams, which can be scary. I have great respect for his perseverance at his age. I too am learning to skate as a middle-aged person, and am currently learning rock to fakie. It's currently NOT easy for me. I hope to someday soon call this trick "easy" for me... but that's just it... It'll be easy for "me" not everyone. To say he shouldn't do these tutorials... man, get lost.

You memory must be fogged mate, this is generally considered one of the harder staple transition tricks to learn with a lot of room for error. Also sounds like you're arguing for the sake of arguing. A Rock to Fakie in the middle of the board definitely has much more of a rock then a decked out one. You just sound like an old head, we get it, Rock to Fakies were invented in the past and they liked to deck them back then, congratulations. "I can't believe it's that hard for someone to do". Crazy concept to think of but maybe not everyone is as good as you are and that people learn things at a different speeds, just a thought. I find Johns videos very informative as do many others here, thus his following.

I try to report my findings as they pertain to me so it’s inevitable that others will not relate and disagree. In fact I end up disagreeing with myself 😂 especially as I progress and learn more. The main goal of the videos is to provide motivation and a time frame for my progression as the pressure of a deadline helps me to focus. I’ve always imagined my videos would be slim pickings for experienced skaters such as yourself? Best Jon
