Carve Grind 101 - My 10 Phases In Pursuit Of Carve Grind Nirvana

Спорт

In this video I'm reflecting on the 10 phases I went through when learning to carve grind on a skateboard. If you are interested in learning or improving this classic manoeuvre then there should be something in here for everyone.

    I’ve said it in the past. Your ability to bail/fail/fall/slam without major injuries is absolutely your greatest skill. Riding switch is insane. You can skate bro. Love your videos.

Thanks for sharing mate! Would love to hear more about how to fall with pads and without to stay safe and prevent injuries

    Inspirational! I'm also a middle aged surfskater learning to skate, just at the very start of this journey. Have improved my carving both sides and been working up the courage to go for the carve grind. Your step by step details are very helpful. I'm sure once I commit I'll get emotional some times😅😂. Also been learning traditional skateboard but am more used to the surfskate trucks. Really cool to see your progress and that you use both styles.

    I don’t know when you started skating, but I started at 14. I still skate now at 51 but I have a lot of fear of hurting myself. It’s getting better but it looks like you really have the confidence now that you’re not going to hurt yourself. Looks like you’re having a lot of fun I stopped for 15 years because of three knee surgeries and finally got back on the board. I’m very glad I did in the past six months. I’ve been able to learn to ride pools drop, but I am scared to hurt my knee again, so I hold back sometimes or at least on the drop these videos thanks for all your help salute the states of the united. lol Atlanta, Georgia.

    Nice one dude! Many thanks for checking in. I started from scratch at 44. Snapped my ACL learning to drop in. Separated my shoulder trying to frontside grind the Vert. Done both ankles, knees, elbows and hips multiple times. One K-O and one torn hamstring and broke my ribs 😢 but it’s been worth it. I’m getting more comfy, and was very much of the opinion that if I skated within my limits I was very unlikely to get injured now. But a few weeks back I took a routine pump round the bowl and slipped out on some unseen dampness and fractured my Patella? I honestly don’t think about injury as I recon that attracts it. I try to embrace whatever happens. I do find the faster and harder I go it the better off I am ??

    Thank you for making these Rad videos, and sharing your experience! You’re so SICK! I hit my first backside carve grind just the other day. Feeling that grind got me SO STOKED! Im working on being more consistent and smooth with my carves, and going faster. I definitely need to bend my knees more, especially frontside, and embrace the speed. 🙏🏽🤙🏽

    Nice! This inspires me to keep practicing my carve grinds. I've recently been getting more comfortable zipping around my local bowl and one of my favorite tricks is the backside early grab on the hip. I can get them over the coping now! Because of my ability to do that trick, it naturally gave me more confidence to start flirting with the coping. I've been able to do little slash grinds on the straight parts of the bowl, but I want to see if I can bring it into the round parts. One of my biggest challenges is coming off of the grinds with ease, I always feel like my feet kind of slip off of the grip tape a bit. As for frontside, I can carve fast around the bowl frontside, but front grinding seems like a next level challenge for me, for now I'll stick with the backsides. This video breaks it down very well, thank you! Love your style, your skating style and boards are awesome!

    I’ve not had chance to try carving a bowl, and the concept sounds frightening, but then I stop to think that I do both backside and frontside carves whenever I go to the pump track so it shouldn’t be that different 🤔

    Yes Bro, good video! Definitely will help me to get my first carvegrind. Tell me how did you manage to skate the bowl at XC? Those bowls are wicked but unskatable for me because how slippery they are. No friction at all. Like riding on the glass.

  • @JonBishopSkate

    @JonBishopSkate

    Many thanks for the feedback dude. Yeah for XC I start with a good brush out. The rest seems to be in the lap of the gods. I think atmospheric conditions can wildly effect the grip in there. I also slightly change my technique for indoor as opposed to outdoor riding. If it’s slippy a slightly more finessed carve works well?

    Nice recap. Do you find that you had a steady progression on it, or did you have periods where you would regress and have to rebuild your technique? I had been carve grinding like crazy, then took a couple of slams that scared me off. It has taken close to a year to really get them back to where I was! Sometimes it feels like herding cats - I’ll start working one thing and then let another trick get away from me. When I try to focus my efforts to get that trick back, something else will inevitably get away. 🤣

    Yeah man.. this is rad. I can't explain why, but I simply can't do loose trucks. I find it much easier to carve with them pretty much as tight as they can be. As a surfer too, it might just be being used to digging in hard on the back toe or heel that compensates (rather than just leaning from one side to the other)..

  • @JonBishopSkate

    @JonBishopSkate

    Yeah dude, I find if go really fast on bigger sections then tighter trucks work fine. Also bending the knees seems to help.
