Rock & Rule - Angel's song [Blondie/Debbie Harry vocals]

Фильм және анимация

Sequence from the Rock & Rule animated feature film produced by Nelvana and released in the mid 1980s.
This is an early sequence featuring Mok's visit to Mylar's club in search of the "special voice" he needs to carry out his maniacal plans to be the world's greatest rock star. He's occulted to heighten the illusion of his mystery as he watches Angel sing in her magical voice.
And what a voice! Great singing by the one and only Debbie Harry (Blondie ) sets off Mok's special ring telling him he's found what he's looking for.
This was done as traditional pre-computer cel-animation (early 1980s). All the effects were done optically with some help from Industrial Light and Magic where just off doing the first Star Wars movie at the time.
Animation layouts and posing by Verne Andru.
Angel's song by Debbie Harry and Blondie.

Your bandmate starts to sing and you just walk out? You can't even finish the set like a professional and just be pissed off when you're done? You're just gonna leave your band up there like that because what, 'it's my way or nothing'? Sheesh, what a child.

The whole point was to make Omar a bit of a dick so he could "change" over the course of the film to become a nice guy that audiences would embrace. Problem we had was that he came out as way too much of a dick that even though he does change, audiences left the theatre still thinking he was a dick.

@flowonthego - I don't disagree. I think they were going for a Marlin Brando type of good-guy-bad-guy but it didn't work on screen. Also there isn't a "save the cat" moment so there's nothing to make the audience feel like he's an okay guy. Omar was a problem during production and some of those issues are up there on the screen for all to see.

While I'm a fan of traditional animation from the likes of Disney and Dreamworks, my mind constantly goes back to the creativity from other studios and how they took a different path within the industry. So for that, thank you!

One thing that I like about Mylar's animation is the way that twinning is used. Twinning is when both of the arms and hands do the exact same thing, and normally it's one of the first things that novice animators are told to avoid, because it looks completely unnatural. But twinning really works for Mylar because it plays up his fake and sleazy persona.

Angel be like “You’re jealous, inconsistent and you’ve got huge anger issues but you know I kinda wanna make out with you in a car.” Omar seems like the kind of guy that would burn your house down just because you broke up with him but somehow we are supposed to root for their relationship. 😂😂😂 Goodness knows the state of the writers’ relationships abs emotional stability.

Tell me you don't do research to back up your claims without telling me as much... Gen X actually stayed married more often than the Baby Boomers. Gen X just also started the trend of less marriages... Several factors play a role in this. 1. Homosexual relationships being an open thing were becoming more common and have increased as such since the time post the Baby Boomers. Though they were still not allowed to get married until the end of their typical tenure of being married and created a trend of non-hetero couples just forgoing the practice all together and instead just getting legal partnership instead of 'marriage'... on paper it's the same thing but not quite. 2. People were starting to prioritize themselves and their needs and not fit into tightly structured social norms. In short; the nuclear family was dying out. 3. There was also just general push back against traditions, especially since Marriage was till seen as a highly religious affair and even to today it is still seen as much. Like it or not faith in the world is decreasing as people realize they don't need organized religion to be a good person... but instead are just being a good person... That all aside... Omar is still a PoS but he's a 'Gen X' written from the place of a Boomer. The themes in this movie are how Boomers saw Gen X, not depictions of how Gen X actually were. The media a generation consumes is shaped by the previous generation... though with the advent of the internet and more and more 16 to 18 year olds getting platforms to create their own content (for better and for worse) we are slowly shifting away from this model... despite the fact that most media is still shaped by the previous generation in cases like Bluey and My Little Pony as perfect examples. Also the divorce rate since the 2000s (you know the time when Gen X would actually be getting divorced) has been decreasing every year. Though it has spiked in the last few years... along with the marriage rate... for some reason. Not really sure why that's going on right now... Millenials don't really seem to be the type to try and rekindle the Nuclear Family.... Now I know no one will ever read this and i'm 100% certain the only responses I will get will be 'too long didn't read'... but I like to provide fact checking when someone spreads false information because even if only ONE person decides to do the research to double check me... then I made a difference... we need more people questioning the blind statements being made in comment sections... because drivle like this is what is shaping the next generation... online content and misinformation needs to be more regulated and spreading false information should be punishable.

I’ve always been a fan of the band Blondie, Debbie Harry has such a beautiful voice. Shortly after I saw this clip, the song has been in my head for weeks. It’s a shame It never made it onto a album. And to top it off, Susan Roman, who did the voice of sailor Jupiter in the 90s anime of sailor moon does the speaking voice of Angel. A real win-win situation for me. 💛

Thanks so much for your kind words. This is one of the first sequences I did so I can't remember who was lead animator on Mylar. There was far less pressure on the teams doing secondary characters like Cindy and Mylar so we could let go a bit more without fear of constant revisions, like for lead characters like Mok, Omar and Angel.

Each adds their own unique spice to the mix which makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Movie-making is akin to magic as you watch characters come alive. That was the case on this film and Mylar was definitely part of the magic.

Omar's character could have been better developed. I would have done something like Omar completes the set for Angel's song, and the band is chosen. Mok heaps praise on Angel and insults Omar as talentless, causing Omar to become enraged, quit the band on the spot and storm out the back of the club, saying something like "You don't need me! Mok's right - I'm only holding you back. It's over! We're over!" Angel moves to stop him but Mok encourages her to let him go, as he's only dead weight. Later Omar comes to pick up his equipment and overhears Mok/henchmen talking, vaguely, about the real reason they want to use Angel's voice - he investigates to find the truth and shows how he cares deeply for her, and expresses regret how he behaved. Then he spends the rest of the movie trying to prove what he knows, while Angel thinks he's just trying to sabotage her chance for success. Blah blah and the end plays out similar to how it did, but this time the love between Angel and Omar is actually believable.

Yes, some of the music sequences were rotoscoped. I know for sure the Cheap Trick songs were (Born To Raise Hell) but can't recall if this was. To be fair, Marie Anne (lead Angel animator) is an excellent animator so she could have pulled this off without - those moves are not that tough. By the time we were doing this film in the late seventies and early eighties traditional animation was at its zenith of quality and that's what we were going for on this film - Disney quality adult animation.

I suppose I’m in the minority but I don’t think Omar is that bad. The arc of the movie is pretty clear; he starts out as an egotistical and jealous jerk who won’t sing Angel’s song with her. By the end of the film, he and Angel sing together, showing their commitment to each other. I think actions can speak louder than words, rather than having Omar talking about how he’s changed. I think the main issue of the movie is the pacing. It’s not a long movie, but it somehow feels rather sluggish and/or uneven. Either the dialogue is slow in certain parts, or the characters don’t have the same development. There feels like more focus on Angel and Mok, while the three other band members including Omar feel like side characters who run into shenanigans. As captivating as Mok is, I wouldn’t have minded trading some of his focus to develop the others(his voice, cool as it was, started to get grating after awhile). I think the core of movie is there though.
