Unfortunately, today's Disney isn't as bold as it once was. He still changes the songs in the remakes so that they are “correct” and so that the villains don’t offend anyone (seriously? That’s how it is?), and this is absurd. I would love to watch a cartoon about Yzma with this song. We could have been shown the story from Yzma's point of view, who spent her youth raising Kuzco as shown in the animatic, and how she had to temporarily rule until Kuzco could rule himself. Yzma remains the same villain, but with a clear mind that perhaps Kuzco's father didn't have or something like that. Now Disney has driven itself into a hole of disgusting quality content. We can only hope for the legacy of the past, which falls into the hands of devoted fans of the great Disney that it used to be. I don’t know English and that’s why I use a translator, forgive me if you don’t fully understand my text. I just really wanted to share my opinion.

Why do I feel like her original ending would be like the death of Dr Facilier from princess and the frog where maybe the evil spirits, the very ones whom she worked for to make her magic even stronger to where she’s almost unstoppable, drag her down to the underworld for failing them? It kinda ties in her line in the emperors new groove- a cruel irony. She depended on them too much and it was her downfall. Anybody else??? Just me? Okay.

Also why does her scene with all the “zombies” give me “be prepared” vibes? This is really cool though because she was this mega powerful Necromancer/sorceress, but it also makes me sad knowing now that we were robbed of the potential of this. Like don’t get me wrong I love emperors new groove it’s hilarious, but like if they could have put scenes like this in it would have been even better. Also sting writing all the music for the movie and it all getting scrapped except the end credits song, and the fact that he (and our queen Eartha Kitt who finally got her chance to shine once more) wasted time for a really good song like this that didn’t even get used is disheartening

I like how baby Kuzco/Manco is portrayed as the “little ray of sunshine that robbed her of her youth” like she had to spend her best years caring for him. We know she raised Kuzco in the final version and Manco was the physical representation of the sun in the beta, so this seems like a wordplay worthy of a Disney movie.

Disney has a habit of making evil step mothers so guessing Yzma raised kuzco in both the original and final version she kinda fits the evil step mother trope. She blames the sun or “her son” but she’s the one who “raised” him so yeah the song is clearly making a pun wether the writers were aware of it or not.

Now the fact that Yzma's color scheme was deep purples and blacks makes a LOT of sense and I love it. Wish this backstory was kept in. Yzma is lowkey the best Disney villain.

While I was learning skin care for cosmetology I learned that UV rays from the sun account for 90% of visible aging. So this song is not only fun and awesome but somewhat factual, the sun really did take her youth. PS everyone make sure to wear sunscreen if you wanna stay looking young!(even if it doesn’t seem very sunny you’re still getting UV exposure so wear it every day!)

In reality, you're right about the Yzma's motivation to block the sun in the story of Kingdom of the sun: She was a beautiful woman, but the sun, literally the sun, "robbed" her beauty, hence the ritual to bring Supai on to recover it. Yzma in this version was a vain woman and hated the God of Sun because of that reason. Even in the story Yzma would get her purpose and would become young for a little time but ultimately she would have lost and died wrinkling to ashes. English isn't My first language, then I'm sorry if I made mistakes with My grammar.

I always like when stories justified necromancers as people who want to learn how to control death to defeat life. (Aka the end result of life is to die so in order to prevent the process of that learn Necromancy in an attempt to live/stop aging forever) it rarely works out life they hope.

Yzma could have been one of the greatest disney villains, and instead she became... Okay, she's still one of the greatest disney villains, but you know what I mean.

You have to wonder how much it pissed off the Disney execs that we ended up with TENG instead of Empire of the Sun. Maybe it WAS the fact that Yzma was so heavily themed after a Thelemic Satanist. Other villains came *close* but none flew, pun frankly intended, so close to the sun.

​@osmanyousif7849 disagree. Despite the fact that this song was removed from the movie, Disney proved not to be totally stupid and released the track anyway. Now there are numerous animated versions of the clip and singers are adding it to their repertoire. I've even heard a version in Hungarian.

What's interesting is that by the song and visuals Izma wanted Immortality but not just for her but for her father too. She was willing too share it with those she cared about which most Immortality seekers don't want to selfishly hording it for themselves.

I don’t know why, Yzma’s always hit special for me. I don’t know if it’s just Eartha Kitt’s voice or being half of one of the funniest villain duos in Disney’s history. Feels like a while since we’ve had a proper villain song. Can’t really do one when your main antagonist is a toxic home life.

indeed. disney villains should be villains in the kind of bombastic flair kind. the kind where they get their music number to REALLY go to town with stealing the show. when villains are missunderstood or the product of poor actions or choices, its not the same kind of flavor as villains who decide to be evil and LOVE IT. they can have sympathetic moments, but they should be primarily fun, threatening and loving every second of their being evil. Villain music numbers are a chance for the villain to proclaim to the audience and the universe, "Yes i am evil, yes i am the villain, yes i am going to reveal my plan to you. No...i will not repent. THIS IS WHO I AM!" of course, it does not always work, but a villain who remains so for most of the runtime without an axis change is really fun. Yzma we sympathise with for being stuck with kuzco for so long, but it does not change that she is still planning the destruction of the sun, murder, and more because...she is old and feels cheated out of what she feels owed by the world. all those years she spent raising and looking after a kid who became a brat, now considered robbed and she wants to eclipse the world in darkness(and likely monsters if the inca belief about the world without the sun was anything like the aztecs) so she can have it all back.

The plot is good from the start. If they hadn’t made “the prince and the pauper”, he ruins everything and Yzma’s hatred of the sun because of old age, something better could have been laid out.

Incan religion was surprisingly flexible actually. Incans were allowed to worship whoever they wanted, with one single caveat; they must also worship Inti; the Sun God; and acknowledge him as above all over gods. You may worship whatever Gods you like; as long as Inti is above all others. So an Incan family may worship an ancestor as their personal protector god for example, as long as they acknowledge that Inti is superior to their ancestor god. Or a city might worship some other god of the Incan pantheon [such as a mountain god; or a river god, or even Supai/Supay], as long as they acknowledge Inti as superior. Think of Inti kind of like Zeus to the Greeks. Zeus was the leader of the Gods. The big honcho. For example; at a temple; the Hawka [idol] of Inti must be the largest and in prime position. To do otherwise was blasphemous and heresy, and amounted to putting that other God as "above" Inti. [This would usually result in the Preist being punished, up to such wonderful things as being thrown into snake pits to die; and offending Hawka being destroyed] But as long as you do not challenge or offend Inti, you can worship whatever else you want. Really; if the Incans were still around, they'd probobly get on quite well with Hindus, as their two religions could easily co-exist in a syncretic manner. [Not to mention Shinto. The Shintoists and Incans could easily agree that Amerterasu and Inti are the same; both being sun gods; just the gods revealed themselves in different ways to each society or something] Incans could literally worship Hindu gods alongside Inti and other Incan gods. Because that's how the Incan religion functioned.

@@raikaria3090 sounds about right, but still the comedy factor of yzma HATING that its her job to hold inti above all others, when she much prefers Supay to be the superior god. at least then she would not have to deal with the way the sun seems to have stolen her promised eternal youth. plus...in some of the other animated clips we have seens she HATES the sun to the point of even taking shelter behind the emperor's cloak to be out of the sun.

There's a lot of stuff implied by the visuals that gets lost if you only hear the song. Like, when Yzma talks about gaining remission from time, it shows her watching her dad grow old and miserable in the service of the king (who, if I recall correctly, was supposed to be a living representative of the sun god in this story). When she talks about "every little ray of sunshine" it shows her caring for the king's son (Kuzco in the final version). I's the same thing: she's spending her prime taking care of someone else's child. From the final version, we know that he fires her, so she wastes her best years on some ungrateful brat who dismisses her on a whim (as she sees it). And the final shots show her surrounded by animated mummies all praising and maybe worshiping her - perhaps implying that she wants to be appreciated for all her hard work. It adds layers to her character. She isn't just motivated by the loss of beauty, it seems more that she's mourning that she never got to enjoy it because she was being forced to be the parent of someone else's child. She doesn't just want her beauty back, she wants back all those wasted years. "Snuff out the light" is code for getting revenge on the person she blames for stealing her time - who is something like the earthly vessel of the sun god. It does so much with what was just a throwaway line and a joke in the final version.

right on! i wanted to give a bit more depth to the idea since there was a lot to work with! some aspects i added myself (like the stuff with her dad and loathing inti) and some were inspired by the original story pitch and mythology, but I just didn't want it to be all about 'womanly vanity' for a female villain. but a lot of things I added myself ended up being accidentally in line with the original vision and mythos anyway apparently, which is very cool to find out!

Sadly the problem with the actual plot the orig director thought of is said to be too much... There are ALOT to unpack with the original plot... From Prince and the Pauper to a love triangle to Yzma's sufferings to the original myth... Well they had a hard time following what is the actual plot that they scrapped it up and replaced the director just to compete to Road to El Dorado... They don't want a Sinbad heavy plot but a comedy so🤷

@@cheezemonkeyeater The problem is that Kingdom of the Sun is an unfocused mess that didn't know what it wanted to be. New Groove Knows exactly what it wants to be. The good news is that Roger Allers did create the Prophet in 2014.

I get the feeling that Yzma would've been a FORMIDABLE enemy if they went ahead with KOTS. Her vendetta against the god of the sun would be far more deep than just beauty or power, it's revenge for the sun taking her beloved father away from her. Goddamn I love the emperor's new groove but we could've had an AMAZING Yzma based film with KOTS.

This is fascinating, specifically because in Incan culture the Sun was a HUGE religious figurehead- which is why it shows up EVERYWHERE in art and carvings and things. so this isn't just Yzma saying she doesn't want to be old and blames time for her age, or even her supposed use of necromancy going against a less malicious magic. It's literally her declaring war on the closest thing to Capital G God, and every good thing he represented for the Inca

Love this characterization for Yzma. I of course love we got, but if im being honest shes just funny evil woman to me, which is good. But this short song paints a un-appreciated talented genius battling her innate mortal fear of time and aging while also adding even more reason for her to hate kuzco. Also her appearing to genuinely love, admire, and mourn her father is very sweet.

Would be really cool to see this get animated by a bunch of people like those “blank reanimated” projects

Yeah maybe as a different film this would work. Would have to change Ezmas design with someone else though since she was used in Emperors new groove. Also may have to change the time period a bit? Maybe the Wari or Tiwanaku? Although the Wari makes sense because they occupied the location ironically called Cuzco. Its the combination of these two territories which eventually become Inca.

I hadn't realized until this storyboard how genius Yzma's enemy being the sun (and also the title "Kingdom of the Sun") is when you read it as a pun on "son". Kuzco/Manco is literally the son of the emperor, and therefore Yzma's enemy. He was unfairly born into inheriting power that caused Yzma stress and took time away from her youth, and he's a lazy jerk who probably wouldn't be in that position if he wasn't a son of someone important. As I know that the original movie would have involved a Prince and the Pauper plot where Pacha (a peasant who's probably more deserving of a position of leadership) ends up temporarily becoming royalty while Kuzco/Manco becomes a llama, that whole "son" thing probably would have tied into that too. Just because someone is lucky enough to be born with privilege, it doesn't mean they should loom over everything like the sun.

The Incas (not the people but the "emperors") were considered sons of Inti (The sun), directly related to The sun god, So pretty much when she means snuff out the light she means literally.

There’s also the idea of the sun and Yzma’s beauty and aging. The sun ages you and gives you wrinkles which is why many wear sunscreen religiously. Yzma’s idea of beauty rests on looking young.

1:10 "It was always my ambition, to use papa's tuition, to gain some small remission from the vagaries of time." Man, I just love this line. It flows so well off the tongue and just flexes vocabulary at you while perfectly encapsulating her backstory in a semi-relatable way.

The entire delivery of this song from eartha is eye-wateringly good! It felt criminal not to do something with it.

Can someone send this to Andreas Deja? He designed and was the main animator for Yzma. He did every single animation of her in this deleted scene (also did Scar, Hercules, Gaston). He left the project when they decided to completely change the story and he moved over to Lilo and Stitch, giving the character of Yzma to Dale Baer. Andreas has an active blog and I’m sure he would love this. Anyways u did an amazing job and brought so much life to the song with your animated segments, I’m obsessed 🥹

I adore the design you've done with young Yzma taking care of the baby Emperor. Also the imagery of seeing her father "lose" to time really adds depth to her motivations, more than the shallow "I wanna be pretty", it gives a revenge side against the one enemy who took her father from her.

TBF Emperors new groove is one, if not my favourite Disney movie purely for the humour element and of course Yzma. But, for the sequel they should have just done the original plot instead of the direct to home video sequel..

Huge overhauls like this aren’t done in big expensive productions just because. I'm sure that the crew did their best while developing The Kingdom of the Sun and produced some amazing material during that time, but that "something" must have been missing.

I’m glad she had a positive relationship with her father.

As peruvian, I love how you represented part of my culture. Wiracocha was the most important god in pre columbian cultures and Inca's culture, I loved seeing the figures of the god. And the representation of Kuzco as Inti's son. I have no words about how beautiful the animatic is. My dream to see this scene complete is finally true. Thank you

i'm genuinely really touched to hear that! i had trouble researching these gods because there wasn't much information online, and a lot of the background stuff i took from new groove (which i have no idea of its cultural accuracy), so it's really neat to hear it was somewhat relevant! I wanted to represent kuzco's royal family as being synonymous with the sun, the kingdom and inti for storytelling purposes, but I think kuzco being intis son is also a really nice interpretation - i like both! (that's the fun thing with playing with symbolism, seeing how people interpret it!)

From a quick Wikipedia read it says that he's God of time specifically by virtue of moving the sun across the sky? I'm taking it with a grain of salt because Wikipedia but if that's true then that adds another tie between her hatred of time and the sun. If I remember I'll look into it some more and try to verify if that's right or not.

@@TheWilderCat I'm not sure about God of time, but I know about Illapa ( god of thunder and lightning, rain, war and sometimes the weather) He was really important for inka's culture, Viracocha, his son Inti and Illapa were a trinity, Don't forget about Supay, the god of death, he has a rivalry with Inti, that's why in the original film, Yzma made a deal with Supay to destroy Inti. Oh, and there was a leyend about Wuallallo Carhuincho, god of fire, one day he found a lost boy, so he decided to eat him, however this kid was Inti. Inti's father, Viracocha, punished him for second time: His hands and feet were tied to leave him with the animals, who would bite him relentlessly. If any one wants to know more about inka's culture, you can watch the Opening/Closing ceremony of Panamerican Games Lima 2019

1:20 seeing Kuzco represent the sun here gives me an idea. if disney ever decides to reboot this movie, they could still have use song if they have the emperor be a representative of the sun/a sun god. Yzma is then given 2 motivations for getting rid of Kuzco: taking the throne AND superstitious vengeance against the sun for taking her youth (also possibly having to raise Kuzco aged her, again featured here).

Can we just appreciate the fact that even though this song was cut from the final movie that we still got a fully finished version of it? It’s nice to at least see what could have been, even if it didn’t ultimately come to fruition

I love The Emperor's New Groove to pieces, but somehow I really wish we could have gotten both it and Kingdom of the Sun. Both seem incredible, and while we never got to see Snuff Out the Light animated, this fan recreation incorporating some of the animation that does survive from that version is brilliant! Wonderful job!

Nice...sucks this song was never animated at least, and was unused, the late Eartha Kitt had a voice we all loved and Yzma is one of the best female Villans Disney ever made and her song is one of the best. Thank you for this i hope Disney release the full scenes in the future, Yzma embodies aged gracefully!

I loved the stuff you added with Yzma and her father. Pretty much every Disney villain I've seen only cares about money, power or is driven by a deluded sense of entitlement. OG Yzma falls into the later category but she's the only one I've seen to love and care for others. She still has a compassionate side now, when I think about it. But your depictions of her grief really upped it and gave her a new layer of depth.

Ink-suit acting is really a joy, I agree.

I'd like to think that some of this original design, like Yzma conjuring spirits and shadows, ended up being basis for Dr. Facilier. There are a lot of similarities in the creatures if you think about it.

The fact that we didn't get to hear Eartha Kitt sing in the final version of this movie is criminal

This is amazing, it was very on point the she called baby Kuzco/Manco "little ray of sunshine" since he, as the Inca, was supposed to be a descendant of Inti (Sun god of the Incas), so it fits. I wish we could see more, I feel like this plot could have had more influence by Inca mythology, including more about the gods and some other cultural aspects.

What I gather from this song is that Yzma wasn't always horrible - but the death of her father left her alone in the world. Without her father's affections she relied on her beauty to gain the attention she craved, but when she was appointed to raise Kuzco she grew to resent both him and the royal family as her duties as care provider and royal mortician left her too busy for her attention seeking. By the time Kuzco was grown and her duty laxed, age had finally caught up to her and she could no longer get the attention she desired. At the same time, Yzma was an effective but cold hearted caretaker of Kuzco - causing the boy to grow into the callous monster she perceived the royal family to be. Presumably this culminates in her dismissal and rebellion. The likely end to this is Kuzco going on a journey of self discovery to become the ruler he should be, in the process reuniting Yzma with her deceased father who talks her down from her destructive path. The two follow the setting sun into the underworld with Yzma taking on the aspect of the little girl she was so long ago, the film concluding with Yzma finding her "eternal youth" in the afterlife with the company of her father.

I like that it also gives a back story to Yzma. From what I understood, she was very close to her dad, and since she took care of Kuzco (well Manko in this case) since his birth, she seems to blame him for wasting her youth. In a way you can even pity her because she's an old woman who regrets the time she lost and is afraid of the inevitable day of her death.

I really appreciate how powerful you make Yzma seem when she's using her magic and leading the mummies

I know its only a short little bit that barely gives you a peak at there relationship but I like the idea that Yzma had a good relationship with her dad, I always like it when evil characters are shown to be capable of love for someone important to them, it shows that they know what love is and have felt it and expressed it but still they embrace evil.

The way he gave her a piggyback ride after she showed a talent for necromancy was adorable, and kinda heartbreaking when she had to watch him age & decay, growing old & miserable, clearly their relationship remaining strong until his death.

I never noticed it before, but when she talks about the sun that "robbed me of my youth" it shows her raising Kuzco. Maybe it's a double meaning for both the "sun" that aged her skin and the "son" she had to raise for all those years. It's probably obvious to everyone else, but I've never made the connection before.

I love how 01:14-01:18 imply that at first Yzma was also driven by her adored father getting older and frailer and wanted this "small remission" for him, but didn't manage to make it in time. Also that she doesn't blame _Kuzko_ - she blames the Sun god!

As much as I love Emperor’s New Groove, I really wish we got to see what Kingdom of the Sun was like as well.

The Kingdom of the Sun would have been a classic if the Disney executives saw all the work and gave it the respect it deserved. Eartha Kitt is too much of a powerhouse for her vocals and character to get cut as much as she did. Plus, Sting was doing the WHOLE score. He is a talent in his own right and this song is a divine example of it. In a better world or parallel universe, this musical epic could have existed.

Maybe. But even with all the Disney renaissance combined I still enjoyed emperor new groove even more. This didn't change back when I was a kid or now when I am an adult. Kingdom of the sun definitely would be a straight down grade for me in terms of enjoyment. Meh the disney "masterpieces" might be kinda grand but honestly really boring.

I adore the additional subtext your work evokes; the showing of Kuzko as a "ray of light" and the stills of Yzma's father growing old as she aged come together to paint a beautiful broader story, one where Yzma states a vain reason for her acts, seeking eternal life for herself (and perhaps that's what she believes now), even though she truly desired the youth for not only herself, but also her dear father. But she couldn't save him, and she blames the sun, the son, Kuzko, the spoiled babe she was forced to dedicate her most precious years, the ones where her father was near the end of his. She is left now with only anger and bitter sorrow, directed outward at the kingdom that worships the source of her failures, the sun (son). And she WILL snuff that light out.

Honestly disney could still utilize Eartha Kitt's old song, in a re-imagining of the original villain. Like have the movie scenes prior to this song show her in a public places, constantly in shade, covered in darkening clothes, umbrella, etc. Then this song would happen after getting accidentally hit by sunlight, while talking to one of the main characters. Change the original plot, heck could even be something similar to a detective drama. Like a sherlock holmes, meets macebre sort of thing. The voice actor for the non singing role would either be cree summer *She did do a decent Vexus from My life as a teenage robot*, or my personal choice "Mary McDonald-Lewis" When she voiced Veronica Deane on archer, I was like "Sounds like Eartha slightly".

Yo we were completely robbed of an yzma song I’m miffed. Eartha Kitt is amazing. Makes me love Yzma even more. You can tell she really gave it her all with this one

“Who to blame? Who the one? Who to curse? You know the only one to blame would be my enemy the sun”. Damn I can’t believe someone as cool as Yzma would play League of Legends.

The things you did with the darkness taking over and the light slowly going out, replaced by the evil glow, were exactly what I imagined while listening to the song. Great work!

Stunning! I love Kingdom of The Sun, even though i still ended up loving The Emperors New Groove A part of me wishes disney would just release all of the animation that was done for the first movie, because it is simply one of the most facinating pieces of lost media Thank you so much for this ❤ It looks amazing. You drew the storyboard very well aligned with the small existing animation, and it finally makes it look like such a full scene!

I didn’t expect an overlap between the Disney movies and Moomins fandoms lol. Nice seeing you here Gandalf!

As much as I adore Emperor's New Groove, it is a real shame that we never got the soundtrack that Kingdom of the Sun would have delivered.

I didn't think this would bum me out so much. this would have been a very memorable villain song, up there with some of the greats like Be Prepared and Poor Unfortunate Souls.

Wonderful animatic! Probably the best reconstruction out there. Definitely giving this unmade movie what it deserves.

I love what Emperor’s New Groove ended up being A LOT, yet I still wish we could have seen what Kingdom of the Sun would’ve been. This song has stuck in my mind for years as evidence that it could’ve been something truly phenomenal, and I’m glad you took the time to bring it to life.

So I've seen a few animatics of this song, and I have to say you NAILED disney's style when it comes to music numbers. What you did and how you moved things around is exactly how I'd imagine this song would be in a disney film. Well done!

After Disney drops one remake after another, there might be hope that they end up making "kingdom of the sun" as a sorta remake sooner or later when they run out. It probably won't happen but a girl can dream

The only downside is that they couldn’t bring back Eartha for this because I doubt it’ll ever become better than this

This is Beautiful if Disney won’t do this then I know a lot of people will.

Oh my gosh! Someone did it, someone actually did it...and before I could get a chance to. I'm not mad, I'm impressed and amazed. 😊 This is so well done.

I do hope kingdom of the sun gets a chance to shine maybe not a movie but maybe a musical on Broadway

oh for sure. take bits from emperors new groove if needed, but give us this yzma. high prestess, court mortician, and with a desire to seen the world bathed in darkness. but give her a kronk too because...the man is a hillarious contrast to how ruthless and evil this yzma is.

“I could squeeze myself with glee, the promises you’ve made to me!” 3:32 If that’s what Supai looks like, I can’t imagine he’ll keep whatever promises he made to Yzma.

Why not? It's easier to make people sell their souls if you have a reputation for actually paying.

This could have been an amazing new story besides what was given. Yzma in this version was a woman surrounded by death with her only source of love being her loving father, who lost his life to age serving a spoiled emperor deemed to be the beaming sun. She eventually served the Emperor too, and it robbed her of her youth and life, causing her to crave what she lost and gain revenge against the being she believe took everything she loved.

Shout-out to the guy at 3:23 who is just giving it his absolute all

Eartha Kitt really was just the best. Her voice was phenomenal and _fun._ Also, 1:53 gives me Corpse Bride vibes. Reminds me of Remains of the Day! :)

Im SO glad this was recorded before the movie, as it was, was scrapped. Eartha Kitt has such a strong, amazing voice its nice to be able to hear this even after all this time

Damn. Really kinda makes me wish we'd gotten THAT version of the movie! Crying shame to leave this much artistry in mothballs.
