Rock Rails for 4x4 Van
We are going to build Rock Sliders for my 4X4 Sports mobile Van. Using a laser to cut out Chromoly tubing for these rock rails. My friend Justin from the KZread channel "The Fabrication Series" welded up this project in his shop In Las Vegas. I will show you all of design challenges in the video. We floated a lot of ideas, and in the end came up with what I think is an amazing build. Check out this hi energy video.
Trolls: This was video was shot before the COVID-19 outbreak.

I would love to see all the builds for your van..
Justin's beer idea is, of course, 100% right.
Gosh. That metal supermarket makes me green of envy.
You should totally edit my vids... That was an awesome time working with you, but the edit makes it look even morer awesome-er 🤣
Yeah, lets see the van builds, this was great!
YES lets see the van upgrade builds.
Yes more van builds
"I'm kind of good at this." "I just saw a video on KZread of how to weld..." Totally me.
Thanks for the video. Keep safe and stay well.
I like the van stuff too
Cam for steps, stayed for the jacks.
Anything you post is great Dale. From shop to van👍. Thanks for the good video.
Yes, more please.
The beer swilling, brainstorming design process has yet to fail me. You should really try it.
I would like to see more of the build on your van
def would like to see some of that van build!
Enjoyed Dale! ATB, Robin
Great episode.
Let's see that jack!
It's an interesting perspective when you see a KZreadr in your town, going to the places you go to on a regular basis. Curtis Steel, Precision Tube etc...
That laser tube notcher is siiiick! I bet that saves hours of fab time.
The van series would be cool (laser cutting that tubing was kickass) shop stuff also.... Just more content Dale. Cheers
Justin’s awesome 👍
I like the builds miss the machinery builds . My best
There has been a dearth of videos...so yes please all the van build videos will be grasiously acepted. It was good to see the evolution of a design from scratch to finish. Great video Dale, thumbs up.
This was great, Dale. Really enjoyed it! Hope you guys are well. - Tom Z
Yup! See moooore
yes, please
Awesome collaboration!
Always wanted a 4x4 van!
This is cool. I was already following him on youtube.
The Van build would be interesting to me!
We're the rails only attached to the body panels?
Nice to see a collaboration between the two of you. I missed FABTECH this year, maybe I'll see you guy's this year. You should absolutely do more videos on your van project. But add more details than you did In this video.
I think if you run a formed 3mm sheet behind the rail we're it's bolted to the car to reinforce/spread the impact.
Anything you do to make a hi-lift jack different will be an improvement. Unless you decided to add more jankiness or upgrade from smashers to tiny finger guillotines.
Would love to see the van build.
I would be especially interested in that high lift jack, I keep balking at the cost of buying one, so the idea of seeing one built really intrigues me. I also want to see the other stuff :)

hi-lift jacks are like $60...
That cnc is huge to hold that long of a pipe wow
I would like to see the builds. You do a great job with your videos.
The tube CNC amazes me every time I see it and yes show your other builds, this one was cool
more stuff on this van is good by me.
I'd really like to see you go out and drag your van across some rocks with those rock rails. I'm very skeptical that mounting them to the body was anywhere near strong enough. Lots of money for something that looks nice and gives you a wonderfully false sense of security. I hope I'm wrong. So lets see a test video!

You did hear me call them nerf rails? they are one-time use, and I know that but that onetime will save my van. :-)
Show me more, show me more!!!
You know how you toured Jason's shop a little while ago? I'd love to see a similar shop tour of Justin's place, he has some incredible tools!
Add grip tape to the steps ( skateboard tape or step safe tape )
So where is the press you painted?????
of course and by the way your channel say Build something cool go for it !!!!!!
Is this the second time for this video? LaVern
Great Video Dale. I'm going to have to do a collaboration video next.
7:41 what kind of foot pedal is that? I think I need one for in situ tig. Thank you.
Could you add some small gusset plates from the frame to the plates you added for the rails, to reinforce them? Space or any other problems aside, that would keep them from bending up the sheet metal, and be much stronger overall...
Deja Vu I've been here before, haven't I?
What ever happened to the machine shop tours? I was looking forward to seeing the one of the sugar plant in Sterling CO.
Hey recently discovered your channel. I noticed you haven't uploaded lately. I hope things are going okay and we see you soon!
Hey Dale, do you still have your Land Rover ?
You uploaded this a couple of days ago...

@@BuildSomthingCool I wasn't going mad then. Good to know, always a possibility.
anything you do I want to see
"pre corona" lmao.
I've seen this vid before...or am I clairvoyant?
I'd love to go to Vegas, but do I have to bring, my own cardboard box to live in.. Everything is closed..
what's the story behind aluminum not being plentiful in arizona? I thought Arizona was nothing but clay and sand -- exactly what they use to make aluminum, so what gives?
Justin looked like he really didn't want you there. You were wasting his precious time.
never bolt something like this to the body.... ALWAYS to the frame.... first major rosk he hits is going to bend up the body, and cause major damage, defeating the purpose of rock sliders... I would rather have dropped the bars off the the frame, and lost a slight amount of ground clearance bolt on plates that encapsulate the frame rail like the mobtown offroad sliders.

I was thinking the same, seeing how it flexed when he stood on it. Maybe add some 1/2" plates across to the chassis/frame & bolted through the chassis/frame might suffice.
