  • @MrBanarium

    @MrBanarium

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@michaelbee8263 Scorsese's argument was all about semantics. It was about the meaning of what is cinema. He said that as his own film couldn't be showed in cinema theatres, and got released on Netflix instead. Was *his* film, and things released on streaming platforms in general, still cinema? Was it something new, the same way long-form TV was something new? And since the MCU provides a new kind of experience, different from what we used to show in cinema theatres before, is it also something new? Is it still cinema? His opinion is that it's not. That it's a new art form. Not a lesser art form, despite what many interpreted, but a new and different one nonetheless. Then there was his opinion about how this "new" cinema is overshadowing traditional cinema to the point that the older form has struggling to survive, which is sad and quite an interesting subject, but sadly it's not being discussed as much as the misunderstanding around "MCU not being cinema".

    So that means the vast majority of actors that do not do something unusual as to ask the opinion of people in the background rather than stick with the interviewer are not "classy" enough? For me, this is more like RDJ being RDJ, always doing what he wants regardless if it's the norm or not. Might say it's a more engaging, a more friendly attitude but I don't see how is that a class act.

    I like watching the Marvel movies, but can understand Scorsese's perspective. He's a filmmaker who's careful about the projects he picks and obsesses over the little details in everything about it and Marvel basically has a formula where they just plug in elements and turn out several movies a year. I guess it's like fine dining vs fast food. I like both and I think both have their place.

    It certainly seems he'd heard Scorsese's comment beforehand and had put some thought to it already. Of course he's a little pissed, who wouldn't be particulary if someone has criticized your line of work in a very demeaning way. I mean how else would he react? Of cours he took it like a champ here. If you recall Inarritu's "cultural genocide" comment a few years back (it's pretty much akin to Scorsese's comment here) he reacted way differently in that interview, he was clearly pissed and went to his good ol' cheeky self, and that's ok!

  • @trappedintime8273

    Because why let it bother you? the only reason it became a big stink is because we're in this whole outrage culture of social media people should be allowed to have opinions. And I'm sure Robert Downey understood the point that Martin Scorsese was making Martin Scorsese unfortunately just worded it the wrong way but the guy's been around long enough he didn't need to word it the right way😂. nobody will give a shit two weeks from now. No less if you had that opinion on social media it wouldn't have blown up and been all over the goddamn tabloid news shows. but because we live in a society where someone is a celebrity because they are a star or a director we turn that into more clicks aka Revenue for digital media and tabloid media. it's easy to Outrage sheep no less comic book nerds let's be honest.

    "Many of the elements that define cinema as I know it are not there in Marvel pictures. They are sequels in name but they are remakes in spirit, and everything in them is officially sanctioned because it can't really be any other way. That's the nature of modern film franchises: market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they're ready for consumption." I totally agree with that Scorsese statement. He’s talking about how there’s no intrinsic risk in a Marvel formula, no risk for the audience and no risk for the filmmaker. He’s not even saying all superhero movies aren’t cinema, he’s saying the formula is against cinema’s principal form.
