    He's still wrong though. He's claiming that they aren't cinema because they aren't substantive narrative films, instead they are "theme parks." This is wrong. Marvel movies absolutely are narrative films. The fact that there are expensive and thrilling cgi scenes doesn't change that.

    If you think about it. Hollywood is saturated with Superhero films, movie franchises, Sequels, prequels, Remakes. how is that marvels fault? 3 movies a year n about 4% of all movies in a year are "invading cinemas" when i get denied for W/E reason i dont go around pointing fingers....with a movie thats 3 hrs 45mins thats good enough reason for theaters to back off... plus WE the people decide on what we want to spend our money. Good movies make money...not superhero movies. If that was the case how come the justice league did so poorly? IMO quality is objective to the viewer. viewers decide whats good quality by investing in it. if their product is not wanted maybe they should redefine their understanding of quality and adapt. because at the end of day its about making money n pleasing movie fans. SO dont blame marvel...BLAME the peolple

Also factor in the live action Alvin and the chipmunks 4 films, the 3 smurf movies with Neil Patrick Harris, and marvel films like Captain Marvel. Let's get this straight I dont have a problem with marvel (I think the formula is a little repetitive) but i have no real problem with them the bottom line is sometimes the bad product over shadows the good because they certain buzz words are used like "strong female" or "first black hero" and that makes the people of those demographics buy tickets regardless of the quality of the film because they want to "support their people", also nostalgia plays a huge role these days people will buy a ticket to a movie they know they're not going to like just to make an hour long KZread rant on why it was terrible, so sometimes the good movie doesn't win. Just like how teen titans go has better ratings than the original teen titans. Does that mean it's the better show?

Just as a serialized show is entertaining for example the first season of West World or perhaps Naoki Urasawa’s monster, they are still not what would be classified as a different way of telling a story, as was addressed by Scorsese in this very clip. And large expansive franchise films are the same way in the vastly different approach to how character arcs and progression is approached and with how narrative beats are utilized. It’s like the short story vs the novella vs the novel vs book series, or the format of comic vs graphic novel vs light novel vs manga. It’s not an attack on marvel but the identification for the need for distinction and Scorsese just happened to choose the word marking the distinction as being called cinema for a current lack of a better word for describing this form of story telling medium.

    Let's get this straight. Scorsese has been making 'great films' for well over 50 years, many of them 'masterpieces'. He is in his mid-70's and and still making great films at a pace of that of a man half his age. He may have made some films that you don't like but seriously, the man has NEVER made a bad film. Scorsese, literally....IS cinema. He breathes it, and teaches it. He knows more about cinema than YOU!!. I've seen A LOT of posts on how Scorsese is "out of touch". Some of the keyboard warriors I've read posts on will even have the audacity to think they know more about cinema than Scorsese!!!!! Well, you dont and not even close my friend. • @Northshoreboy135

    @Northshoreboy135

    Gotta disagree here, a man in a flying metal suit or a god who can summon lighting are merely the surface of these characters. They are very human and very relatable. They go through very human problems. Spider-Man just wants to be a kid and have a girlfriend and have fun. Iron man loses his control when he finds out his parents were murdered and wants to kill the person who did it to them, he also has PTSD after a traumatic experience in his life. Thor and Loki may not even be human but they have one of the most human struggles of all... one dude is a rebel who has to learn that the world isn’t about him and to care about other people, the other is an adopted son who just wants his father to love him. I think to say that just because these characters have these steely impossible exteriors and ability’s, that means we can’t relate to them isn’t fair at all. And you can see this fact by all the people who have been touched emotionally by these movies. People who have laughed in these movies, people who have held their breath in these movies, people who have cried in these movies. If what you say is true, that we can’t relate and therefore connect to these characters then you have to explain why people cried when Spider-Man died, or why people cried when iron man died, or why you could hear a pin drop in every theatre in the world when thanos succeeded in infinity war at killing half of everyone. It’s cause ppl have connected, ppl can relate, people do care about these characters. And isn’t that one of the biggest parts of cinema? And emotional connection with the characters your watching.

    Nic Rock thanks for the post dude. I don’t know man. I think the writing and connection thing is a matter of opinion. A lot of ppl feel the way you do and a lot feel the way i do. But one thing u brought up was a comparison to Sam Raimis Spider-Man movies (which I also love, even more than the Tom Holland movies). Remember the question is “Is Martin S. Correct in calling them theme park movies. I mentioned the connection to the characters as a point to say that no he is wrong they are real cinema. You brought up a previous Spider-Man movie. I’d bet everything I have that Martin S. Would say Sam Raimis Spider-Man movies were “theme park movies” also. Cause he isn’t say they aren’t real cinema cause (like we debated) you can’t connect to the characters. He clearly has his own description of what he feel real cinema is and neither the marvel movies or Sam Raimis movies (I’d bet) would fall in that category. So now tell me would you agree with Martin S. That spider man 1 and 2 (Toby M.) are “Theme park movies”? If not then you understand why I say he is wrong about the marvel movies. Because every reason you might come up with in your mind to disagree with him about the spidey movies and say they are real cinema. Those are the reasons I say marvel movies are Cinema.

    I like Marvel a lot, and I like comic hero characters but I also agree with Martins points on the MCU. Dont get me wrong, I really enjoy the MCU. (Guardians of the Galaxy being one of my favorites) but I totally see what Scorsese talking about. MCU films are very formulaic. If you see one you pretty have an idea of what the all the others are going to be like. After a while they do start to become an overused gimic and more of a fashion fad at the moment. Just like how shoot'em up Westerns, B-sci-fi movies and the classic Universal Monsters were the film fads of their times. Also, the MCU is owned by Disney which in many ways puts some real limits on what kind of stories they can tell on the big screen. They need to keep a "kid" or "family" friendly reputations and avoid "offending" anyone. As a result, you'll never see an MCU film like "Joker" that is made "exclusively" for adults that want to be challenged. Even Deadpool wasn't green lighted by Disney and that was made more for rebellious teenagers.

Comics as a genre was never meant to be super meaningful and perfect. It was supposed to be fun. People have FUN making them and watching them. @Richard Parker I do agree with you except on your point about Joker. I don't think that film was particularly challenging at all, it was sort of like a Kidz Bop version of Taxi Driver, a lot of the points it tried to make were watered down and not explored very well, and since it was still a comic book movie, it just felt like the average corporate product attempting to pass itself off as 'artistic' by being pretentious in an attempt to cover it's shallowness. It's an OK movie, a decent remake/remix of Taxi Driver/The King of Comedy, but I would actually argue it's one of the biggest examples of the comic book genre dominating cinema without having much to say, and as a result, wasn't as challenging as it clearly thought it was being. That's just my take on it though, and I know it's a generally well-regarded film, so it's possible that I'm just missing something.

    He's completely right and also very wrong. Aside from that fact that it's irksome that he comments on the MCU while also saying he's never seen any of the pictures. The financial considerations for movie goers now a days are huge. Take a family of four to the theatre for one movie or pay for all of your streaming services for that month for nearly unlimited entertainment programming where each member of that family can watch their own choices? Heck, for films that are NOT huge visual extravaganzas streaming is an exceptional way to watch with no people around you in the theatre being rude, with their smartphones as an example, plus unlimited rewatching. Excellent way to watch deep character pieces and dramas. While the experience of the theatre movie going experience is still the best way to see "amusement park ride" movies, those big bold massively visual experiences like the MCU, Star Wars, etc. It comes down to the best use of a person's entertainment dollars. Scorsese couldn't get The Irishman greenlit by the major studios with the budget he wanted, but Netflix did it. Streaming is the perfect home the character driven work. Heck, if it wasn't a good home for it would someone of Scorsese's character and reputation have even consented to make it with Netflix? Of course not.

    One can’t blame Scorsese or Coppola for espousing this view. Both filmmakers came to prominence at a time when young people were questioning the tragic consequences of their parents’ generational childishness. These two directors responded to that challenge with greater realism in their work. To their mind, the popularity of Marvel probably feels regressive, like a return to 50s superhero tv shows. And if I’m right in assuming that, then the backlash they’ve received probably also feels regressive. It’s like a return to 50s witch-hunts. 60 years ago there were certain sacred cows in this country that a person simply didn’t question. Scorsese and Coppola did question them. But young people today on a whole aren’t like that. They might think they are “woke”, but that’s really a contemporary, trendy dogma. How ironic it then is that in this sense, Millennials and Gen Y folk who feel affronted by the questioning of their own sacred cows are behaving more like their grandparents then like their parents.

To me it kinda baffles me that people believe these movies will be forgetten because trust me they won't. The company itself has been making comics since 1939. Marvel has been for so long. And it's not just the movies that will keep the franchise alive. People hold conventions and fill there house with merchandise of these characters. People cosplay and dedicate there lives to making fanart of these characters. People even make video games and short films on KZread of these stories. So how could people actually believe these stories and movies will be forgettable. Are they the best movies in the world? No of course not. But that's not what matters. It's beautiful to experience other kind of films, and not just get stuck in MCU.

    Big HD TV´s will never replace theaters. Just a week ago I went to see Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. I love that movie and of course I've seen it many times in TV. But inside a theater is a a whole new level, acoustically, the level of details, the sound, the atmosphere, the sensorial experience. And of course there's the warmth of sharing your experience with a social group which amplifies and enhances the whole feel. I like Netflix but it won't happen. Motion pictures came to stay.

    Anyone who says that Scorcese is not going with the time and not evolving is absolutely wrong. This man tries out different types of animation technologies before anyone else and is going with the time using platforma such as Netflix to have access to ressources that enable the production of movies that would not been produced otherwise and also made available to a huge audience but also to cinema goers. I love the marvel movies but I also understand Scorceses point and also see the negative aspects of big money movies. What is crazy is that the media made this topic so huge even though he didnt really diss marvel...

    Marvel films are like cotton candy. They’re bright, tasty and fun but eventually dissolve away. Disney and Hollywood have become a consortium, a machination if you will, to take nincompoop’s money with abysmal movies that are about as unvaried as a job at a call center. We should take solace in the perfection of Martin Scorsese’s films. He’s the rare breed who’s gotten more and more relevant with each passing year. The subjugators of Hollywood will never kill art and I would rather mop the floors at a peep show than give them my money for the repetitious superhero ordure they fill the theaters up with.
