The Road Warriors always had an aversion to doing the job because back in the day not only were they a massive guaranteed draw but also there was always another territory to go work for. Unfortunately for them the business had completely changed & old habits definitely die hard.

💯! True the road warriors were living legends and certainly shouldn't have been jobbed out like geeks, But on the other hand trying to pull an ultimate warrior/hhh (no-selling the big finisher) wasn't cool either

Andre the Giant is another example of an industry legend who once ruled the roost and then later felt the wrestling landscape grow smaller around them. Hawk manufactured the demons which dug his own early grave while Andre was simply ill fated due to the circumstances of his birth.

Not selling doesn't really make anybody look tough. If you make your opponent look like a real threat to you, then it's a bigger triumph when you win over them. The Road Warriors never understood that. RVD did understand it and was a very generous wrestler. Back in ECW I saw him give a lot of jobbers their best match ever, by letting them get some good shots in. He knew that he'd win the match in the end, and letting the other guy have a good match would make his own win look like a real achievement, since the opponent got to look a bit formidable. Like, CW Anderson -- nobody thought that guy was anywhere close to RVD in skill, but RVD let CW get in some good offensive moves, and sold 'em. It didn't hurt RVD's image at all, helped CW look like a stronger wrestler, and gave the crowd a better show. Rag-dolling some guy who seems to pose no threat at all isn't any great feat. "Squash" matches are never really that good... they're not exciting to watch and they don't look like a real achievement for the guy who wins 'em. Beating up somebody who seems tough, though, that's something.

Sucks to hear that happened to RVD about the run in 95. I want to say that was when Hawk was still a single which many thought was bad because he would get out of control far more often than when Animal and Precious Paul were around in the 80's and 90's. Liked the match you and Kane had with them both teams got some good offense in. I think the Road Warriors thought the WWE front office wanted them to be the Road Warriors of old kickass and take names when the office was, "no more like help get the younger guys over" sucks it didn't work out that time.

Hawk was a unique guy even in wrestling. One of my favourite stories is when Ole Anderson was trying to find guys for the Road Warriors gimmick and he lined up a bunch of men and everyone was saying how great it was to meet Ole and then it was Hawk's turn and he said "You think you're a tough guy, huh?" or something like that.

@@Nepthu That's completely unfair to Hawk. Not trying to defend his behaviour, but to judge Hawk's toughness on a sudden shoot tournament he was thrown into that happened at the height of his drug addiction problems and when he was physically at his lowest (he died just 5 years later), not to mention 40+ years old and 15 years into his wrestling career, is highly flawed. I'm not saying he was an elite fighter who could have hung with MMA guys, but Hawk came from the mid-80s when MMA wasn't even a thing yet, and he was legit tough in terms of not backing down in fights and being able to back his bravado, even before his wrestling career, when he used to work as a bouncer.

I think it would be silly to not assume Hawk was tough but I don’t think he would have faired great against anybody with martial arts training of nearly any kind even in his prime. JR told a story of Hawk and Dr Death nearly going at it in the mid 80’s and if that fight actually had went down, I’m not sure Hawk would have held the same reputation afterwards. It’s all speculation and I don’t mean any disrespect but just going over history of how those kinds of fights tend to go.

As a fan of the Road Warriors since the early 80's when they were in the AWA to sell to certain moves...that's betraying what the Road Warriors were. They no sold certain moves all the time and the crowd popped for it. To not allow a few No Selling moments...that's watering down the team as a whole and not understanding who Hawk and Animal were and why they were legends. I mean seriously...seriously...after they joined the WWF/E they were basically disrespected and ruined by the end of their tenure there. Really really pissed me off to no end knowing what I knew about them in the AWA and the NWA/WCW. In fact..the way the Road Warriors were treated in the WWE in the later years still pisses me off. Good for Hawk for not being a trained organ grinder's monkey.

The Road Warrior's first TV match was in 1983, the events described by RVD was in 1995. Older talent are supposed to put over younger talent. It's how the new generation get their street credits for the TV show. Buddy Rogers, Nick Bockwinkle, Harley Race put over Rick Flair when he was starting out. Flair put over Dusty Rhodes, Sting, Ronny Garvin. The win over an opponent isn't impressive if he loses all of the time.
