I heard about Tonka Envy. My friend got diagnosed with that when I was a kid. His therapist said it's something you definitely don't want to get diagnosed with. Especially at a young age.

We need to harvest the oil sands, and I am glad that Canada is one of the world's top providers of oil, but it's incredibly important that we reduce CO2 emissions on a global scale to levels the environment can process. We need to develop green solutions, but for now, yes, we need oil. This is why I'm so happy to be Canadian, because we act on both sides of the issue. Alberta provides the energy we need now while Ontario develops the technology we'll need later.

Even if Keystone never gets approved, the USA will still get A LOT of oil from Canada, mostly by rail. So no, it's not going to go away, it's going to increase, and not by a small margin anytime soon.

Rail transport for oil is a public relations nightmare (supposedly it's not the only dangerous good shipped by rail, but I haven't heard specific other examples) and truck transport is less efficient... which in theory sounds environmentally even worse, but if it forces the prices up, that can in turn only force people to shift toward greener energy. If we're going to keep selling this stuff, we should at least be processing it into refined products like gasoline before selling it rather than shipping it over as crude oil.

And again, people don't use renewable energy to make money. They use it to avoid paying for energy. We don't use oil here in eastern Ontario, we use hydro-electric power provided to us by Hydro1. And for the last seven or eight years we didn't buy any energy at all because we used wood stoves in our house. And I don't drive, either. My family saved a LOT of money by doing that. But, umm, there ARE people in Ontario who have gone completely green and they are getting money from Hydro1 for...

...because it distributes a higher percent of the wealth to more people. The tar sands industry came at a time when people were so worried they wouldn't find a job or keep the one they already had that those who work for the industry basically need to feign their own ethics and ignore the consequences of their work to avoid feeling bad about it. When you have a single industry like that at a time when so many people need jobs, you create a dependency on the industry that wasn't there before.

Well, the point is to think about it. Are you comfortable living in a society where everyone is trained by corporations, essentially from the day we are born, to be good consumers and to never think about what is going on?

Mercer isn't supporting them he is just there talking to the people who work there. Like you, Kevin, I don't support the uncontrolled expansion of the Tar Sands either, but the people who work there are still Canadians, they still vote, still have a say, and are still a part of this country. hawker800FO I think you meant to say environmentalists, not hippies!

You do realize these are all government-generated fuel sources, right? It makes sense that nuclear is at the top of the list because Ontario is one of the biggest producers of thorium isotopes in the world. But we still use up to four times as much hydro-electric as we do natural gas. Now, assuming these numbers refer to the extent that the province is exploiting these energy sources, it makes sense that wind power comes in at 4th place, 500MW below natural gas.

After all my attempts to carry on this debate rationally and logically, this is what it has come down to. Go on, save face if you feel you need to, but until you can actually manage to make a valid rebuttal I've got nothing more to say here.

Equipment used to harness and store renewable energy does cost energy, but then so does installing an oil furnace. The difference between the two is that renewable energy is a one-time buy, whereas with oil you keep getting charged for it. Poor farming villages in eastern Africa are installing their own solar panels, and they are apparently getting richer because not only can they...

...per munute for oil and natural gas is greater than that for solar energy. But they don't use solar energy for that reason, They use it because it is renewable and it does not harm the environment. And in fact, since it does still provide energy, those who use it tend to be happy with it. I mean, we don't all leave every single one of our lights and appliances on 24/7, do we? There are some of us who use less energy, so for us the lower MW yield per minute is worth what it does for our planet.

we cant use solar up here because in winter the sun comes up at 8 am and goes down at 4pm, not even 12 hours of sunlight, plus its not always sunny

@hschan4 The companies owned by the oppressive regimes do not operate in Canada. Shell Oil profits do not fund the Saudi government - Saudi Arabian Oil Co. does fund the Saudi government. See the difference?

@TheKingdom89 Are you talking about cremation, a common practice? And it's not like we're letting people die in the streets! We offer support, shelters, and other assistance programs to try to help the homeless get back on their feet. These programs have suffered recently, but once the conservatives lose power, they'll improve.

It then becomes a lot easier to tell people you need that industry for everything, from jobs and the economy to basic standards of living. Stephen Harper could have done the same thing with nuclear energy, yet right now there are more people who know nuclear is harmful than there are who know oil is harmful... The objective with installing your own solar panels is that eventually you SAVE enough energy from not having to pay for oil, natural gas or propane to repay what you paid for your solar panels. Renewable energy is not about getting rich, but then neither is oil and gas. People use renewable energy because they want to be more self-reliant and cut down on carbon emissions.

You're absolutely correct. He's not a hero. Not to you. But I feel silly for indulging such a simple point of view. You see, their are different perpectives in the world. In fact, there are as many different perspectives as there are people. I'm not sure it's possible for you to comprehend this, but suffice it to say, blanket statements are not universally accurate.

Not to mention there are people who are using solar power RIGHT NOW and who don't even have access to gas or nuclear energy. And concerning money in Ontario: That's because all that money is being invested in oil. Oil does cost money to invest in, so what it all comes down to is personal choice, which can be affected by ideology and familiarity.

I should correct you here: We need ENERGY for all these things. It doesn't necessarily need to come from oil, or natural gas. The one real barrier against using renewable energy is that the majority of the people in this country do not bother to think about getting their energy from anywhere other than oil. Our government won't bother investing in hydrogen feul for cars, and it won't bother assisting people with installing renewable energy equipment for their homes.

So, then, what are we doing to exploit wind power? Not very much. Government investment still depends on the taxpayer. If you still think wind power is so bad, how can you blame the government for not doing enough to exploit it? Aside from the point you missed about the majority of solar power generation being produced INDIVIDUALLY instead of on a government level, and consequently yielding more supply of energy than demand, people who use solar energy will acknowledge that the MW yield ...

Prime Minister Stephen Harper wants to make his home province rich. THAT is the problem. Our economy will be more centralized and provinces are going to be more divided than ever if the Keystone XL project actually does get approved by the U.S.A.

I don't think I am the one who is uninformed here. My point is that the reason solar and wind energy - as well as other forms of renewable energy - haven't garnered as much public interest is partly because our prime minister has created a greater reliance on it than is necessary, and partly because those who support it either have a personal stake in it (jobs and political ideology) or would rather stick with something they are familiar with instead of something new. The problem is that people literally do not have any critical thinking skills. People are trained in our society to avoid thinking, avoid making important decisions, trained to watch advertisements on TV, the internet, newspapers, bus stops, and most importantly, trained to buy buy buy. This tye of society would simply not work if people had critical thinking skills. I repeat, because it is such an obvious fact; this type of society could not exist if people had critical thinking skills.

There are better ways to make money. Also, this industry is only temporary (due to the finite nature of the commodity). You're welcome to go swim around in a tailings pond for all I care, but I will still openly criticize you.

I lived there for ten years or so and I still call it tar sands. It's really bitumen. We don't need this oil yet and I think we should leave it for another generation, maybe they will find a better way to extract it. Right now trying to separate the oil from the tar sands is ruining northern Alberta. The fire this summer burned down part of McMurray and now it's flooding. The place is a mess. The tar sands should just shut down and wait until there is better technology for extracting the oil.

Holy frick...there is government propaganda here, too... Rick Mercer is a comedian. His job is not to question people. His job is only to crack jokes. He could walk into Nazi Germany and still wouldn't condemn anyone, simply because that isn't the purpose of his show. Granted, Rick still doesn't have as much guts as John Stewart or Stephen Colbert do when it comes to criticizing his government...but I think his intention here is to review the tar sands and let viewers think for themselves.
