My wife is Spanish and the first time I went to Spain I went to Granada not knowing anything about the history and the Alhambra fascinated me. I'm still no expert on the subject but Al Andalus was nothing short of amazing and it makes you wonder what could have been. I recently went to Cordoba and to the Mezquita and it was breathtaking. Jewish, Muslim and Christians all lived peacefully in Muslim Spain. Cordoba was a hub of culture, learning and science and one of the most important citites in the ancient/medievil world. Thanks for the video.

hahahah they completely ignored half its history they ignored it was a religious and cultural icon to aryan christians and that many of these ideals and openly acceptant nature of spain predated the moorish invasion and in fact was a well known cultural center of the visigoths for 100s of years. this idea that the abbasids who outlawed religions other than islam and punished christians with unfair taxation and slavery somehow improved the ability of the spanish to communicate philosophical ideas and religion is beyond nonsense its a straight up lie. also the "golden age of spain" in the islamic age lasted 40 years under the rule of one who man who then died and everything went back to being a strict religious oligarchy.......but this video is nice if you want to revise history or outright ignore anything predating the islamic invasion of spain and france.

Saracen Hunter, ah the "we were there at one point" and "we improved the region" arguments. Shouldn't arabs then emigrate from large portions of the middle east? Persians were there at one point and they improved the region. While we're at it, Macedonians (and later their successor states) were there at one point, and they improved the region too. What comes to Arabia in particular, don't forget that Mecca should totally belong to Nabateans...

the difference between christian/non-muslims and muslims is that, when muslims invaded any countries during the rashidun, umayyad, abbasid and ottomen caliphates, they only overthrew the standing regimes but were very merciful to all the inhabitants. every people, no matter if majority or minority, no matter from which religous or ethnic backgournd they came, were protected and treated with justice and Mercy by the islamic caliphates. the muslims granted guarantee to religious freedoms to everyone. the muslims were so tolerant ,that they even allowed the christians and the jews to rule With their own religious laws amongst themselfes. such a tolerance is unparalleled in human history. you wont find any other nation that allowed subjugated people to rule with their own law. The tolerant attitude of Islam towards non-Muslims, whether they be those residing in their own countries or within the Muslim lands, can be clearly seen through a study of history. This fact is not only purported by Muslims, but many non-Muslim historians also accept it. Patriarch Ghaytho wrote: ‘The Arabs, to whom the Lord has given control over the world, treat us as you know; they are not the enemies of Christians. Indeed, they praise our community, and treat our priests and saints with dignity, and offer aid to churches and monasteries.’ source: Tritton, Arthur Stanley: ‘The People Of The Covenant In Islam.’ p. 158. Will Durant wrote: ‘At the time of the Umayyad caliphate, the people of the covenant, Christians, Zoroastrians, Jews, and Sabians, all enjoyed degree of tolerance that we do not find even today in Christian countries. They were free to practice the rituals of their religion and their churches and temples were preserved. They enjoyed autonomy in that they were subject to the religious laws of the scholars and judges. source: Durant, Will: ‘The Story Of Civilization.’ vol. 13. p. 131-132. unlike christian countries, the islamic world was always a place of refuge for religious and ethnic minorities that were persecuted by other nations, especially by christian europeans murderers. for example minorities like the jews, always fled to islamic lands (usually to islamic spain, north africa or the ottomen empire) after they were persecuted by the european christians. in islamic lands, the jews, christians and other minorites were protected, could rule with their own laws amongst themselfes and lived in peace, to such an extent, that the jews experienced their so called "golden age" under the islamic sharia law in al andalus. even up today, those former european jews have communities in north africa. (but most jews migrated to the jewsh state after it was established on soil that was stolen from palestine). in fact, the tolerant thoughts to religious or cultural issues for every individuell was brought and taught to europ by the muslims of al andalus. before the islamic influence, the europeans always persecuted religous minorites and fought sectarian wars against each other. moreover, the muslims brought civilization, freedom and justice to the nations, without committing any bloodshed. Islamic culture brought science and medicine to the darkness of europe through islamic spain (al andalus). in europ, scientific books were burnt because they were regarded as paganistic, lol, and scientists were persecuted. But in the islamic world, human civilisation, science, culture and arts flourished. in fact, islam and the muslims were the ones who enbaled the rennaisance in europe, by bringing the uneducated europeans, science and the tolerant thoughts towards religous and ethnic minorities. Islam instructs the muslims to gain beneficial knowledge. With that instruction in mind, the muslims have invented most of the greatest and most influental invention is history. the muslims, are the ones who have invented algebra, algorithm ect. without algorythm you would have no smartphones, no comupters, no internet which you use to probagate your hate against muslims... the muslims were the ones who developed mathematics, chemistry, physics, culture, arts, astronomy, medicine literally all kind of science to the stars. in fact, the muslims actually taught christian europeans how to calculate by teaching them the decade noumerical system. before that, the european christians used the relatively pathetic roman noumerical system, with which you cannot even calculate simple multiplications. (btw: some scientific things were taken from the ancient mesopotamians, indians and greeks which the muslims than further developed and brought to the stars. but most of inventions and the most significant ones ,like algebra, algorythm ect. were invented by the muslims themselfes). the muslims were the ones who brought science and medicne to the darkness of europe through islamic spain (al andalus). the muslims were the ones who invented the concept of universities (degree giving learning instituions), from which the whole world benefits today. also the social system of modern day europ was introduced by napoleon, who simply copied it from the muslims. Robert Briffault said in his book: "the Making of Humanity”: "It was under the influence of the arabs and Moorish revival of culture and not in the 15th century, that. a real renaissance took place. Spain ( was islamic in that time), not Italy, was the cradle of the rebirth of Europe. After steadily sinking lower and lower into barbarisrn. it had reached the darkest depths of ignorance and degradation when cities of he Saracenic world, Baghdad, Cairo, Cordova, and Toledo. were growing centers of civilization and intellectual activity. It was there that the new life arose which was to grow into new phase of human evolution. Science is the most momentous contribution of Arab civilization to the modern world, but its fruits were slow in ripening. Not until long after Moorish culture had sunk back into darkness did the giant, which it had given birth to, rise in his might. It was not science only which brought Europe back to life. Other and manifold influence from the civilization of Islam communicated its first glow to European Life." in fact, every invention of the west had a predecessor in the islamic or muslim contribution to the world. Robert Briffault said "For Although there is not a single aspect of European growth in which the decisive influence of Islamic Culture is not traceable, nowhere is it so clear and momentous as in the genesis of that power which constitutes the permanent distinctive force of the modern world, and the supreme source of its victory, natural science and the scientific spirit. The debt of our science to that of the Arabs does not consist in startling discoveries or revolutionary theories; science owes a great deal more to Arab culture, it owes its existence... .The ancient world was, as we saw, pre-scientific. The astronomy and mathematics of Greeks were a foreign importation never thoroughly acclimatized in Greek culture." The famous french thinker and polymath Gustave le Bon says in his famous book The Civilization of the Arabs: “The Arabs were those who brought civilization to Europe materialistically, intellectually and morally. History did not know a nation which has produced what that nation did in such a short time, and no people have surpassed them in technical innovation.” Furthermore, the muslim scientist based their quest for knowledge on the islamic instruction to gain knowledge. Almost all instiutions and universities had also the function of a mosque, where the people prayed and preached islam. For example, the great „house of wisdom“ in Iraq, Baghdad, which had the task to gather all the world's knowledge of that time, was also used as a main mosque in Baghdad. (btw: as mentioned earlier, universities were also invented by the muslims in north africa. From there, the concept of universities spread first throughout the islamic world, then to the rest of the world.) Literally all scientific books were filled with Quranic references in relevant subjects. And the scientific books also always began and ended with verses of the Holy Quran. also to social system of the west today (with child allowence, pension ect), was copied from the islamic caliphate of the 7th century. napoleon bonaparte, who introduced that social system into europe, simply copied it from the second caliph of islam Omar bin Khattab r.h. but the christian european invaders on the other hand, not only overthrew the standing governments when they invaded a land, but they also ,without any mercy , massacred entire populations during their colonial conquests and enslaved the remainings. when the christians recaptured spain, they tried to kill every muslim and every jew, which caused hundreds of thousands of death to civillians. in north america, the british almost completely wiped out the native americans. and in south america, the spanish and portuguese killed 2/3 of the population and enslaved and force-assimilated the survivors. thats why they speak spanish and portugese and south america today. in india, the british killed about 20 to 50 million people. in africa they tried to transport about 20 million black people. only the half of the number survived and were enslaved in america. and about 100 additonal million were killed during the european african colonialisation. many more milllions were killed in asia. muslims never comitted such cruel atrocities. thats the diference between the merciful muslims and the european christians who used to be much more evil than isis terrorists, hitler or whatever. that fact that some westeners still regard the muslim conquerors as "bad" just showes how ignorant some of them are

Do you draw the characters in this video? I'd be very interested to read or watch a video about the clothes and armour they wear, and the weapons they're carrying. It's not always easy to find information about this. I don't know whether it's accurate or not, but from the way it looks the fashion seems deliberate so I'm guessing it's all historical. I especially like the colours and variation between them all.

I love your videos about medieval history and history in general and I'm highly interested in early Islamic history as well, so I really appreciated this video. It'd be great to have followups about the rise and fall of al-andalus civilization. Also, can you make a "secret history of the american revolution" video in which you can talk about facts and anecdotes from the american revolution that most americans never hear, and the education system never tells us. Or do you have any particular periods of history you have particularly deep knowledge of? Hearing your original perspective on history that you're interested in would be interesting to me as well. Good luck with your channel, you are creating a lot of good content, you can only grow. The only thing that might be scaring away subscribers are how political the comments section get, but I love it. There's few other comments sections on youtubes where I can argue with people with such diverse perspectives, and see bad arguments from all sides of the political spectrum. Plus: political arguments in the comments means more audience engagement, which is only good for your channel statistics. Anyway, have a good one, mate.

Thanks :) Yeah, a follow up on Al-Andalus would be fun to make. That is an interesting idea about the revolution...the colonial scrip (currency abolished as a cause for war ) and Spanish involvement in the war are a couple of things I can think of off the top of my head that doesn't get mentioned that often. There are definitely many super interesting instances in history that are fascinating-that is what is so great about the internet, that you don't have to focus on the same old re-hashed bits and explore the ignored parts.

  • @LuisAldamiz

But the Sueves were conquered by the Goths and vanished from history. They did not matter anymore at this point of history. As for the Cantabrians, if they still existed, had also been conquered by the Goths around 630, when the Franks took over the other Bagauda (anti-feudal revolutionary) lands, known as Vasconia. Vasconia did exist then as independent Duchy (in personal union with Aquitaine) and should deserve a mention because what happened between the blitz in Gothic Spain and Poitiers/Tours? The Basques were being invaded and giving an awesome fight, so successful they were that the Caliphate raised a massive invasion army and that's the army that the retreating Vasco-Aquitanian army and the Frankish reinforncements defeated at Poitiers/Tours (actually a hill between those two cities, still in Aquitanian territory).

Are there any estimates about how many berbers/arabs migrated/invaded Spain in the 8th century. I would personally guess around a 100,000 but I would like to know if there is an actual scholary estimate. Can't seem to find one online.

Although the video is interesting, the title and some of the content should be reviewed. There was no such thing as Spain by the time the muslims invaded the iberian peninsula. In fact, Spain doesn't show up until the XV century. Way before that, you had several kingdoms, one of them still exists today... Portugal. We're talking about one of the oldest nations on earth! But it's typically american to look at the iberian peninsula and think of Spain, although highly incorrect. My suggestion: refer to al-andalus as iberian peninsula or mention Spain and Portugal since the latter was there long before the country know as Spain came to existence.

Hi Epimetheus, nice video, is interesting when someone shows this part of the history of Spain. This is the main and widely established interpretation, but it is also very interesting how scholars are rethinking all of this, that have been written in the last 50 years, without the same interests, and forcing to defend theories that were given as truth so easily. This is it not new, but there is a fresh essay arguing that no muslim invasion nor christian reconquest happened. The last, i think is logical, a reconquest that last 800 years cannot be called reconquest as already said by Jose Ortega y Gasset in his 'Invertebrate Spain'. It is just the way the spanish identity have been built, true spanish were before 'them' and there is an enemy ( them ) that justify our identity. But Iberia wasn't the unified catholic land before the rise of islam in the peninsula. And about the first, the author says that islam rose on Iberia, little by little, maybe influenced by political instability so it was more like a civil war between kingdoms, and disguised as an outland invasion. And then, this part is widely known, in the 800 years of convivence to come, there was different christian and muslim kingdoms, they fought each other no matter their faith. Christian kings allied with muslims to conquer other christian kingdoms and viceversa. The village of Albarracin, a muslim Taifa, for example, was ceded ( and not conquer ) to a christian Navarrese family that keep the Taifa independent from another christian kingdoms like Castiallian or Aragon. This part of spain history is so deep, but sadly so intentionally obscure and simplified to spanish people. Also from the ethnic and racial point of view, the revisionists says that there was not even much arab contribution ( non 'white' contribution ) in Al Andalus, as the Amazigh ( i prefer how they call themselves than berebers ) were aryans back then and arabs from middle orient were just a minority. This part of spain history have a lot to dig. Here some links, but sorry in spanish. Thanks for the video and i hope you find interesting these revisions. www.papelesdesociedad.info/?El-mito-de-la-invasion-musulmana // elpais.com/elpais/2018/03/04/hechos/1520120370_739370.html?id_externo_rsoc=FB_CM

I super like your comment, Carlos. It is very interesting for me to know how different hispanic countries and their governments built their identity (often very sadly). As an example of your civil war point, I would like to recall the fact that even an icon such as El Cid was a vassal to a muslim ruler for some time.

Víctor Alcántar thanks Victor, Im very glad you find it interesting 😊. I did not know about El Cid, but sure he was. It is just as you say. The nation-states were being created in europe, the roman catholic church had a lot to say back then, it was a project of homogenization. And with the rise of science, military, and economical power of europe we became ethnocentrics, we became whites. In my opinion in the golden age of european supemracy and colonies start all this identeties that we drag till today. But there is a lot of social and cultural work these days and this is changing, and this is necesary to live in a tolerance and peaceful world.

Good points, Carlos. Actually the so-called Reconquista had two phases: an early one after Poitiers, in the 8th century and beginning of the 9th century leading to the establishment of the three original Christian realms: León, Pamplona and Barcelona. Realms which were weak and typically ended paying tribute to Cordoba, especially once the independent Emirate (later Caliphate) was consolidated. The second phase began in the 1030s, with the implosion (in this order) of León (defeated by Pamplona some year earlier), Cordoba (death of the last and weak Caliph, Hisham II) and Pamplona (dynastic division of its "empire"). Then Castile became the major power and soon was defeating León and Pamplona and forcing a coup in Toledo, which was the pretext for the Almohad invasion. The Catalan-Aragonese crown and the newly independent Portugal also formed in that period and what followed was the real Reconquista (or just outright "conquista"), which lasted less than two centuries, culminating in 1212.

First you should ask what is Spain, or what mean to be spanish.. because you know.. culture is always rolling, cannot be stop or tamed. Culture is always evolving, and what it was 50 years ago maybe is no the same now, as culture is made by people that lives, change, get married, mix with other cultures, and the culture reflects the reality. If you want a white, laic, cultural crhistian spain and europe exclusively group.. you are in your right to defend that, but i cannot see anything good that could lead us. Only to an aparheit, internals conflicts of hate, radicalization.. instead, having a plural spanish may be the best safeguard to go. When you say Them, is Us. That 'they' does not change what you think they could change, of course there are innovations, diffusion between cultures, but that even happen everyday without talking about arabs, but in every aspect of our culture, within iberian people. And remember that migrants sons they born here, they have this culture, and the innovations, there is no radical change, there is no disaster alarm.

Who is bleeding Spain dry are its caciques. Suffice to quote the two lapsus linguae of who is now Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Defense, Dolores de Cospedal: "we have worked very hard to plunder this country". She said that twice and she's still a most powerful politician: what is wrong with Spain? Everything! There is no sense of responsibility: all is about trying to be the Lazarillo de Tormes, the archetypal Spanish anti-hero who is all about making a profit and rising in the social scale, no matter who or what morals have to be destroyed in the way. It was that way in the Golden Century and it is even worse now: one just have to look at how the water and the land is wasted into tourism instead of building a sustainable economy. A banana monarchy without bananas, just crowded beaches and wasteful golf courses in the middle of the semi-desert.
