Check out the cleetus MacFarland channel. They have one and rally it!!! The tech in the rear axle itself will blow your mind... the engineering is so cool. A 9 inch with a spool. Fluid couplings. Brembro brakes being essentially used as clutches to steer the axle.... Its amazing. I mean you'd think open diff w cutting breaks or something? Not even close...

I'm an ex-mechanized infantry soldier and I can tell this thing is the future of ground warfare. It won't completely replace manned armor, in the same way that aerial drones won't completely replace manned aircraft. But just as aerial drones are playing a huge role in modern air warfare, ground drones will play a huge role in future ground warfare. A few points about future developments we'll need to see: The control range needs to be drastically increased. Luckily aerial drones already have directional satellite systems that cannot be jammed and allow the vehicle to be controlled from anywhere on Earth. Fit one of these systems into the Ripsaw. The armament will be fine with a 7.62mm machine gun, a 25 - 30mm auto-cannon, a couple of Stingers and a couple of Javelins. This will allow it to attack almost anything. Give the auto-cannon a high elevation angle so that it can also be used against low-flying aircraft such as helicopters. Use the extra payload capacity to install a small diesel-powered generator to recharge the battery when needed and extend the mission duration. Install a self-destruct explosive to stop it falling into enemy hands. Automate the control system to the point where it can do some duties without direct human control. For example, fit it with a short-range radar and put it on sentry duty to guard bases against drone attacks. Simply give it a quadrant to guard and leave it to do it's job.

Much of what your wish list contains is already on or coming to a military hardware shelf sometime sooner than you might think. Textron has been a great fit for the Howe twins- they seem supremely well adapted to innovative solutions delivered quickly- Textron adds the dimension of scale production. The importance of modularity to that end cannot be over emphasized. The all electric drive is a new departure for the H&H teams- I would look forward to it in the mining robots, fire fighting remotes and other patented designs. Getting these two noticed by the Army was as much the doing of the late Senator, Olympia Snow and FWIW, Textron had no idea till after that. Great looking lash up, though! FR

Agree completely, I had the exact same thoughts. I'd make the self-destruct when tampered, not only prevent tech theft, but takes a few enemy techs/soldiers down with you. My other thought is that diesel generators make the tank more detectable and dependant on oil logistics. I'd rather just use that space to add more batteries and/or solar charging.

The only vulnerability I really see here is the possibility of being jammed making it essentially a very expensive hunk of metal. I honestly think the future is with vehicles that are optionally manned allowing you to remotely control it when the enemy lacks the tech to jam it's signal but able to be manned when facing a enemy that can.

If you train an AI to control it instead of using remote controls then make sure to isolate it from any network and coms that could be used to inject code, you'd have a 100 % secure tank (as long as someone doesn't directly open it and replaces the code and modules with their own).

That appears to be the main issue facing all of the military, since it's getting more dependent on communications than ever.

I loved watching them when they had their show on discovery. These guys have made some real game changing machines not only for the military but also for Police and Firefighters

Oh darn, I remember watching a series on the Discovery Channel when I was a kid quite some time ago, it was about the How brothers and their quest to create unmanned vehicles that were to be used by the US military. It is seriously impressive to see that the pinnacle of their endeavors is this particular vehicle, much respect for what they're doing.

They've largely done business with movie companies(Fast and Furious 8) and private owners with 2 of the ripsaws being in private hands. One of those private owners is Cletus Mcfarland a youtuber who recently made a video of him driving his Ripsaw through town to home depot and McDonalds.

Can you imagine a whole battalion of Ripsaw moving ahead of a few heavily armored control vehicles with Ripsaw drivers controlling the Ripsaw tanks?!?! You could have an Abrams type armored vehicles trailing behind the Ripsaw, with controlling battalion or platoon of Ripsaws. I know the "1 mile" control radius might be an early limiting factor, but what about having a bunch of drones airborne used as signal repeaters that could boost the Ripsaw control radius, or even the Ripsaw themselves receiving and transmitting control signals for Ripsaws further ahead in the procession. I don't believe you can ever fully eliminate human soldiers from the battle field, but I can definitely see drone vehicles being the leading edge of an offensive or defensive force.

@@imwacc0834 Unless we're planning to invade the moon with these things, there's nowhere they could go that an EM signal originating in the US can't reach in under 100 milliseconds. Speed isn't the problem--it's signal strength. And that would be pretty well addressed by the idea of using an ad-hoc mesh network of Ripsaws, planes, aerial drones, satellites, crewed vehicles, and ground stations.

@@adrianhenle Not just signal strength, the primary limitation is the frequencies used by the communications equipment. I am assuming the data rates between the M5 and the control station is quite high, and in order to provide sufficient bandwidth, the frequencies for the control communications equipment must be somewhere in the gigahertz. Therefore power is part of the issue, now with increasing power. The RF emissions put out by the control station and M5 would be increasingly notice able to any semi-advanced adversary. Directional antennas mounted on gimbles would probably be the way to go for the range improvement in my opinion.

I remember the making of the rip saw. Guys my hats off to you for all the hard work and innovation to get this thing made. Congratulations and continued success.

A vehicle with humans will always be important. But the small size, low weight, maneuverability, and overall versatility of arms/defenses/capabilities of this tank is what could make it a valuable asset. And many places a tank is needed but impossible to arrive because of its size, weight, and mobility in difficult terrain. Steep slopes, timber, mud.

It's cool to see they can re-use all the historical small light tank designs repurposed and minus a crew shrank down even more compact to reuse the best designs ever Made in all modern war history

I like the idea. You can definitely reuse older designs and even materials. Modern tanks are quite expensive to keep it survivable to protect the expensive and classified materials and protect the crew. A cheaper tank can be mass produced and you don't need to lose sleep or bury someone if it's destroyed. And the older designs do work.

Not sure what you are referring to, the ripsaw M5 is entirely new. Also they will not reuse past designs for this because the entire design briefs are different. Manned tanks require a lot of wasted space for crew, much much heavier armour and a very different drivetrain - small unmanned tanks need none of that.

Were they really? We expected unmanned vehicles long before 2000. Hell, we already have flying drones in operation. This vehicle, technically, is nothing new. In terms of a concept, its been already planned. The only thing that changed was the tech that was unavailable at the time. Similarly to electric vehicles. A joke in 2000, a reality now (even if still wonky and unreliable). But theres a bigger concern here. According to the info in this vid, this thing cant take a hit. A single shot landing on the hull is going to immobilize it, while another to the turret is going to defang it. If anything, its going to play a role of a ambush bait. Far in front of a column, acting as recon. The only use it will have is to strip the ambushers of a few rounds, that would otherwise land on manned vehicles. A useful role, no doubt, but a role that could possibly be achieved for much cheaper. Also, the thing can only be controlled within 1600 meters (1 mile). That, in modern tank terms, is knife fight range. Not exactly filling me with optimism.

Twenty years ago? You should read the BOLO stories by Keith Laumer. The BOLO ran the gamut of the M5 all the way to a "continental siege unit." Granted, science fiction, but "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" was science fiction and predicted the nuclear submarine.

This is brilliant; both the machine and the documentary. Well done. And 'Yes' - I believe this IS the future. The modular aspect is the core element. Electric power will be the 'secret sauce'; a threat this powerful virtually stealth?? Wow.

these are just remote controlled tanks, its far from an autonomous robot, robots are a long way off, its the whole friendly fire and not killing civilians thing that makes it difficult to create combat vehicles, even the air forces uav's need to be fed targets and given the order to attack them to be able to actually attack anything, sure they can fly by themselves but thats about it.

Absolutely the future! That said, I think 'we' want to be careful of "virtualizing" the battlefield too much; but, this is such a no-brainer for a point or scount role - big time!

@@milo-qh7cv the weapon that killed the Iranian physicist a year or so ago, was fully autonomous. Used facial recognition software to identify him as he was driving past. Killed him in the driver’s seat, left his wife beside him Undamaged. Apart from the mental damage of course.

I had what I thought was a pretty good idea for modern tanks and vehicles. So it's a small drone that always hovers a set distance above a tank. It's used for situational awareness and maneuvering. Basically it could be like the vehicle has 3rd person driving/view. It could have multiple cameras some pointed forward to give you a high vantage point. Or optionally 360 degree view. It could also have a dedicated long range recon drone line this one has.

@@maxonmathew4557wheels have worse cross country performance than tracks as they have limited points of contact with the ground thus putting the weight of the vehicle on the wheels that are on contact with the ground thus making a higher ground pressure which results to the vehicle either struggling to go thru deep mud or just get stuck, tracks have better cross country performance because it spreads the weight of the vehicle on the tracks which has way more points of contact with the ground than wheels thus resulting to less ground pressure

@@cooldudecs You need to have generators all the time to charge them. It is easy to bring and fill fuel, but how much time you will need to charge it and if you need to charge 10 of such tanks in the same time?

Take for instance what’s happening in Ukraine where the Russians have totally destroyed infrastructure such as water, electricity, gas, etc. The use of recharging smaller drones isn’t the question that needs to be answered, the question is how are you going to recharge an electric tank. Yes it will take a couple of hours to recharge an electric tank, this is one of the inherent problems of recharging an electric vehicle in general the time it takes to recharge. You can refuel with gasoline or diesel in a matter of minutes and be back in the fight. Hold on while I recharge my tank….

I had the idea of an unmanned tank like 5 years ago, I'm honestly shocked they weren't developed over a decade ago, the advantage of not putting an entire crew in mortal danger is already a massive plus.

The problem 5 years ago was communications and signals technology as it was (and still kind of is) easy to acquire the signal to the unmanned vehicle and gain access. Now, its turning into different story...

A sci-fi author wrote some stories years ago based on an AI controlled series of tanks called Bolo. Had room for a human or 2 if needed.

A lightweight lowcost unmanned tank is a great idea. Between IED's and the newer anti tank weapons no armored vehicle is really safe. Higher speeds, more maneuverability and ability to quickly and accurately engage targets on the fly would be hugely beneficial. The front gun on this model looks to small to be a tank cannon. Since it is unmanned and lightweight I would think it would be advantageous for it to develop an auto-loading recoiless rifle or missile system for it. It would be far more destructive then with the small bore gun it has on it now. Recoiless rifles also have a variety of rounds to increase over all lethality. The anti personnel rounds are extremely nasty.

A future of ripsaws playing hide and seek with sharp swords is just wild.

See, I get how cool this is. I just really think using this sort of hardware on civilians for "crowd control" purposes is inherently unsafe, irresponsible, dehumanizing and in line with a trend of militarization of police forces - which, in my opinion, is a very dangerous place to go to as a society. In other words, I think those machines shouldn't be used to intimitade a civilian popupation - bad shit's gonna happen.

Yeah, everyone talks about defunding the police (which I think is bad.) However, they _do_ need to be demilitarized. The equipment given to every day officers now is insane. When I first saw normal officers walking around with ARs in _Canada,_ I knew we were headed down a dark road. Just look at what happened at the Ottawa protests here. I think civilians should be legally allowed to own anything the police have.

@@Skrenja the thing is: those officers unfortunately need all that gear. Rifles, armored vehicles, and even unmanned vehicles are necessary because putting that uniform on paints a big target on your back for a lot of people nowadays.

@@Shaun_Jones Exactly right, and I think it would be safe to say that any police force would not have control of one of these. It would be limited to the National guard or Armed forces in extremely dire situations, not just an average riot.

@@TheOverlord000 the thing is, I doubt they’d be used for riots much at all. What this would be invaluable for is barricaded suspects. That said, there’s probably only like five police departments in the entire country that could afford this monster.

When crowds start to be less human machines make sense

I'm conflicted about the growth of unmanned combat systems. When does it become killing to make money? If a nation becomes unwilling to risk its own lives in conflict, then should that nation go to war? Does it deserve to win because it can kill as a game from safety far away?

This is the future of war. a 15 year old video game master piloting one of these and absolutely decimating opponents.

Can you imagine if these things ever get deployed into an actual battlefield? Imagine being on the (less technologically advanced) enemy side. Suddenly you see 20 of these things speeding towards you at 40mph, making no noise, with infrared vision and no human pilots/drivers. Yeah... I would just give up.

If the claim is true that the Ripsaw can withstand a 108mm cannon, the T34 would autofail because it cannot damage the opponent.

@@tonyantonio8956 Which makes sense, the Ripsaw is american while the T-34 is russian. USA trying to not sacrifice their people if possible. Russia not caring. Or, Russia spending lives, USA spending money to slove the issue.

Unmanned remote controlled vehicles are useless, they can be jammed with ease and then the tank is useless. Making it autonomus is also not an ideal solution since it would either be way too dangerous or easy to fool.

With AI jammers will no longer be a problem. It will decide its next move by itself.

Neat idea... electric is still its weak point... how long does it work, and how often does it need now batteries.... electric cars and hybrids are still very limited for actual usefulness

These would make the perfect scouts. Pair one with every MBT instead of the more vulnerable Bradley. You could even use them as decoys to bait AT positions.

I like cleverly designed tanks. I think it would really reduce the loss of soldiers' lives. It's beautiful, it looks streamlined with every situation. I think it's lightweight and it's wonderful, really beautiful.

There's one big issue: Full-Coms-Disruption (Also known as Coms-Blindness or Coms-Jamming). When an enemy uses a full bandwidth jamming, these toys will simply fall dead for the duration of said "jam session". Radio-operated tools need ... well ... radio-control. When an enemy throws up a full bandwidth jam ... . This is why several instances try to create fully autonomous, intelligent systems.

When I saw the first version of the Ripsaw, I directly realized it's military capabilities. That thing is serious trouble on the battlefield.

I think the most valuable thing about unmanned vics in the near future is that anything short of total annihilation will not stop it from collecting intel on the enemy. Even with no gun, no tracks, on fire, and a huge hole in the motor, as long as coms and the camera pod are working, it's relaying information. A normal human crew can be panicked or force to retreat and the fog of war sets in as soldiers under pressure make bad reports, forget details, or are pushed out of position, but the remote crew of these vehicles are under no such pressure to be turned away and can calmly evaluate the enemy up until the moment of full system destruction.

Every Airborne Infantry company in the Army should have one of these

That is so cool. Unmanned warfare comes at a great cost, the ability to stop wars. Why stop a war if no humans, soldiers, are being hurt or killed?

I wonder about adding to tank platoons and Mechanized Infantry platoons a fifth manned vehicle, a command/comms style APC with internal stations for the control of up to 3 of these ripsaw vehicles with desired mods attached. They could assist with everything from scouting and mine/IED clearing to being a platform for AT missiles and helping to screen against enemy infantry to low level air defense from drones or helicopters (and it's obvious that defense against air drones is going to be a HUGE concern moving forward). The tank company and Mechanized Infantry company HQ could have a couple of carrier vehicles for spare/alternate modules for the company ripsaws, along with general spares and a few repair workers.

If unmanned drones are this popular, then I can only assume ripsaw is about to be a trillion dollar company in the near future
