ISSEY MIYAKE
Issey Miyake is an anomaly in the world of design and of men. The Japanese fashion designer not only shifted social perceptions on clothing, he pioneered the technology that made this shift possible and did so without forgoing the heritage of the craft. A survivor, inventor, philosopher and anthropologist who seeks to question the nature of a universal public as it navigates the modern world whom more importantly would have us questioning it too.
Issey Miyake, originally named Miyake Kazumaru, was born on April 22, 1938 in Hiroshima, Japan. He rarely discusses his childhood and for good reason - his mother and family were killed when the first atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima when he was only a child. At the age of 10, he also developed a bone-marrow disease and walks with a limp to this day. Ever since this tragedy, Miyake has only ever looked forward preferring to think of things that can be created, not destroyed and that bring beauty and joy. Today, he is renowned for pioneering Japanese design and combining Eastern and Western elements in his craft.
Miyake assembled his first collection named “The Poem of Material and Stone” (Nuno to ishi no uta) whilst studying graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, and graduated in 1964. In 1965, Miyake moved to Paris to study haute couture at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. His career began in 1966, working as an assistant designer at French designer house Guy Laroche and for a period with Hubert de Givenchy. During his tenancy in Paris he also witnessed the 1968 Paris riots, which sparked his interest in creating clothing for a universal public.
RENEGADES OF FASHION - NEW 11 PART NETFLIX FEATURE FILM SERIES
CREATED BY PAUL G ROBERTS
To the casual outsider the Fashion Industry can appear to be a cauldron of creativity with endless innovation and risk taking, as every new season designers have to forget their past successes and milestones and return alone to a blank canvas, to create their next collection, and this cycle repeats itself every 6 months. Granted there are principles, codes, legends and motifs that inform a designer’s agency, but essentially it’s starting over.
Even if you hold only the most casual interest in the world of fashion, it’s hard to deny the fascinating life stories of every person we have chosen to showcase in this Series.

I still have a Miyake dress I purchased in a consignment store in the 1990s & it still looks good today. It's timeless. That was a great video. Would have loved to see his Tokyo exhibit wished it travelled abroad to other cities. He's one of a kind.

Always love Issey MIyake’s works, i first noticed his works way back when I was studying graphic design in ‘93, his pleats please materials and dresses were just astonishing back then and now almost 30 years later its still relevant. The man deserves a Nobel prize in Fashion Design if there is one!

I had been wanting to buy a Pleats Please dress for some time now. I admired the pianist Mitsuko Uchida wearing his designs while performing here in 2019. I kept looking at dresses for years and then finally last Thursday I purchased the maxi dress. I ordered it from England and I was nervous about it being the correct size and it getting here (USA) properly. It arrived today...it was such a bittersweet feeling, opening the package, having read this morning that he had passed away. Of course the dress is so beautiful and elegant. Rest in Peace, Mr. Miyake. He not only persevered after experiencing traumatic events early in life but blossomed and insisted on being positive and creating beauty and hope.

I remember discovering Issey Miyake in 1982 when American high fashion stores started to carry his line. Wilkes Bashford was the first to carry Miyake in SF, than the following year Macy’s started to carry Miyake. Wilkes window display was a neru collar men’s shirt with the side slit pocket opening. The pants had this long material of the same pants that was twisted around the waist twice. I remember wanting to buy this inside out khaki pants and told a friend to watch them and when I came back 15 mins later, my friend was wondering around and not watching the pants and someone picked up and I couldn’t find. So I ended up buying this other pair that opened up and had a inverted pleat in the center of the leg. Thi is was 82/83 and I was only 18/19 years old. In 1985, I did find a pair of Miyake men’s pants for like $7. and had a minor rip where the draw string hole was and a easy fix. They were like $160. pants that probably some rich guy didn’t have time to fix or return at a shop and donated. I was so thrilled finding em.

This video is technically pretty janky (weird picture and audio cuts, music is mixed way too loud, etc) but the information is amazing. Issey Miyake was truly a genius! There's so much fluidity and joy in his work, you can't help but smile when viewing his shows.

Some footage is very valuable. His experience of war was new information as he dose not talk much about himself. His design has urban sophistication and geometric elements, but at the same time it feels gentle. In addition, he is also very handsome himself.

I was hoping to see more of his earlier work. He is more than just pleated polyester. Which is nice, but, looking at his body of work, is commercial. His work from the early 80's was for me, magic, sculpture, walking art. He was very creative with cut, shape, texture, details, and of course fabric. Sometimes using materials that was not considered appropriate for fashion.

VOGUE DESIGNER number 1476 i believe ....that is a standard for me...i rocked a million different fabrics...and permutations...but of course...basic black was the best....again...very BATMAN...i had it made HUGE and oversized and wore it to a Christmas party the year Tim Burton's BATMAN came out...GENIUS...the SUBTEXT to his work....is everything....and even though he does not talk about his life after...THE BOMB...i do remember him talking about how he was always trying to entertain his mother and make her smile as she writhed in pain from the exposure to the radiation from...THE BOMB...and how he always has a serious exploration of MOVEMENT and JOY in his work.....HE....is a UNIQUE BEING....TRULY SINGULAR...and QUITE SUPERIOR...and it really does appear EFFORTLESS WITH HIM...and he is transcendent of the trite stereotype of the TORTURED GENIUS...he is a GENIUS WHO HAS BEEN TORTURED...and we get to SEE....LIVE...and WEAR his REACTION TO IT....he is A MARVEL....

L’Odyssey, like A Space Odyssey. You don’t pronounce the ‘ in french. Not L’eau De Yssey. Otherwise this doco is excellent, you’d think its all bs the movement and functionality aspects of his work but it isn’t, trust me it is not. Every pieces of clothing I have from him, 1 pair of pants and 3 or 4 shirts are soo comfortable, truly a joy to wear. Only downside is its not for cold weather at all.

Please please, can doc makers have narrators who can pronounce their subjects’ names correctly and fluidly, though? Shouldn’t conveying accurate pronunciation to the viewer be as important as conveying the designer’s background and vision? This “izzy mee-YACKee ”is painful to the ear.
