"TOO FUNKY" - THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF THIERRY MUGLER
Manfred Thierry Mugler the artist, showman, provocateur was definitely "TOO FUNKY", nod to the George Michael video featuring Mugler's memorable designs.
Mugler unfortunately passed on the 23rd of January 2022. He leaves behind a massive creative legacy, a body of work stretching across fashion, fragrance, cinema and music. His singular creative vision and determination led him on a path to be a self-made man, a world-beater and an icon. He will be remembered for his creating signature looks for luminaries like David Bowie, Madonna, Diana Ross and Grace Jones, and perhaps most notably was responsible for Demi Moore’s iconic dress in Indecent Proposal. His work continued into the 21st century, working closely with Lady Gaga, The Kardashians and Cardi B, as well as crafting costumes for Beyonce’s 'I Am' World Tour.
Mugler was born in 1948 in Strasbourg, France. Showing signs of creativity from as young as 9, where he claimed to be more interested in drawing than school, he also studied dance from a younger age, leading him to join the Ballet of the National Rhine Opera at age 14. Studying for six years, he learnt the value of performance and showmanship, which would inform his career as a designer. In addition, he also attended the Strasbourg School of Decorative Art, which led to him creating and designing his own clothes.
After this six-year period at age 20, he moved to Paris and began working for a boutique called Gudule. Two years later he began freelance work for ready-to-wear fashion houses in Paris, London, Milan and Barcelona. In 1973, Mugler launched his first clothing line, “Café de Paris.” Fellow visionary Azzedine Alaia joined him in working on his early designs, their collaboration lasting until the late seventies, where Mugler encouraged Alaia to launch his own career. The following year, Mugler created his own label.
In 1976, fashion editor Melka Treanton asked him to show his collection in Tokyo, and two years later Mugler opened his first boutique in Paris. At the same time he launched a one-off male collection.

There will never be a another like him. A true fashion artist.
He broke so many barriers with his all inclusive attitude, what a creator

He really didn't break barriers. He just put it out there. His brand of inclusivity was the 90's version all the way. Where you allow people to be themselves. Not where you force your version on other people's children because you want to normalize it.
He's my number one favorite designer. So sad he died but so glad he existed. Truly one of a kind

Too bad Simonetta Gianfelici is not even mentioned in the video. She was one of his muses for a long time.

Thank you for bringing up her name..... What a goddess ! Her and Linda Evangelista where THE best ever changing and mutating models. They were muses for a lot of designers at that time on and off the runway.... The best !
His designs were so advanced n so ahead of its time...a true genius He was truly just one of a Kind
Only the supermodels of the 90s and before can do justice to his creation.
I met him several Time as my aunt worked for him as he opened is own showroom. He was a very nice person. All his shows where amazing and différent one from the other. I remembre crying because I arrived too laye to a show and they didn’t let me in. He dressed a french minister. He did a dancing show in Paris. His transformation in Manfred made me sad because I did not reconize the sweet person I had met. When the perfume Angel went out all the women in Paris did put it and his cloches were the Ines you had to wear to go to the famous disco Le Palace. That was happiness. I miss him.

We loved him too Desmond, by any moniker x
Awesome reflection on Mugler's past. I only wished it was 3 times as long, like a full-length movie. Still so much about his life and fashion is untold and unknown by the general public. I am watching the movie again so I can pause it periodically to ponder some of his most iconic fashion pieces. I am more familiar with his fragrances (which are superb in both the fragrance rendition, the bottles and the packaging), but this is my first time focusing solely on his fashion, which I am aware of but not that familiar with. Thanks for providing me and us with this opportunity.

Thanks Henry it is a pilot. Which we plan to make into a feature film. We make these partly to test the response, use as a tool to get finance or a Streaming deal, and also enter into some film awards as a short. The one we made in Feb 2022 about Virgil Abloh won best Short at Cannes.

Why does anyone feels the need to link a designers job to a celebrity as he was “better known for”… Designers like Mugler have changed fashion cause of their own talent.

LEGENDE. Reste en Paix.
about Too Funky the truth is that George Michael decided very late to be in the clip, and mugler said no because everything was very precise, and George came back and wanted to fire Mugler and shoot the clip, and everyone said no (they were all volunteers for fighting AIDS, the purpose of all of this) , so after that George Michal was filmed in another studio like if he was directing the clip, and added that to the final clip, with the famous "Directed by ?". And Michael and his producers cut off all the gay and lesbian scenes because the singer was in the closet at that time.
Chagall and the metropolitan opera house. Muglar for everything else.

Sorry but that wasn’t Kate Moss at 21:28 but regardless, RIP Thierry Mugler.

Fashion director. Yes. Decorative art.
Loved this as much as your other vidéos. What I truly missed were two things: formichetti depended on Gaga and was incapable of developing the vision and future collections and 2 the genius of LOreal to pull together à Mugler rétrospective at the MAD that celebrated the man and his work and gave him à chance to say farewell and receive the love from all whom adored him. For your interest Clarins were forced to drop him when he became an actor in gay s+m porn films buy their biggest mistake was to make clothes commercial as you show and shut down the fashion maison keeping their focus on promoting the name Angel instead of the master, Mugler

How do you know that? I just became obsessed with this guy
"roulée comme une Buick" does not mean "drive like a Buick" but "built like a Buick". Roulée in French when applied to a woman, means she has a great body, or that she is hot ! elle est bien roulée ! Rouler also means drive but not here ! it is a bit tricky but true ! PS : I think that this expression is a bit dated, I don't hear the young people using it anymore ....
Jerry hall isn’t Kate moss @ 21.20 into it
Anyone know the song that starts at 3:47? So good!
Which remix of too funky is it ?
I cant believe they didn't mention the dress Demi More wore in "Indescent Proposal." That was such a big part of his legacy, right after the Buick bustier.

Truly a tragedy 😢. I hope he is with the Angel's that inspired work and perfumes..
around 17:40 too funky mix, which is that ?
Alien was one of the best fragrances until L’Oréal bought it.
I don't see a credit for the narrator. It sounds like Lisa Eldridge.
This voice sounds a lot like the amazing make-up artist Lisa Eldridge! ..it would be quite fitting.
How vain is Beyoncé? She uses Muglers death to post photos of herself, she couldn’t say something lovely about him or even RIP no, she makes it all about herself. SMH. As for Kim Kardashian, the fact that Thierry came out of retirement to design her Met Gala look (it was fabulous, she looked incredible) says a lot about their relationship & her high regard and his for one another.
What did he die of??
Uh yea at 21:0 ish that wasn't a Kate moss pic that was Jerry hall and then you called "Ivana" which was really Ivanka!! Just sayin'
6:50 it's Gaultier... come on do your job it's not that complicated
Is that Naomi Watts narrating?
It's a fantastic episode for the Designer, but the narrator's delivery puts me to sleep.
21:27 not kate moss
Cuantas personas mas moriran por esos pinchazos de la muerte????
In my opinion they should compete in making nice wearable clothes, for normal everyday wear, not those outlandish designs.

He ruined his life with fame.😂 He ruined his body and face with fame. 😂 He was not cool😂😂😂😂
My POV as a sys female, I find his style too severe and flash, a little too much hunger for attention, which comes off as trashy. I think his finest work was pre and during the Alaïa collaboration. I think when designers make it big, they lose their initial inspiration and veer off into too much showmanship to maintain attention. But as a young woman at that time, you couldn’t stop me from wearing a leather bustier in the 90s every chance I got ! And my standard perfume was Angel! The man had talent, and made an enormous footprint in the fashion world.
