Maza, lol I did high jump and javelin as a youngster but there is now way I could combine the two like pole vaulting. I can run full pelt with a big stick alright but I would end up throwing the pole away before I leapt !!

you should also see how he self-scratches one of his attempts in order to respect the anthem that started to play as he was running towards the vault. this is an example of having an 'excellent spirit'..

I remember one girl that messed up but she was so overjoyed that she was able to be st the Olympics and said she was happy nonetheless and I think she ended up winning gold later on I can't remember what sport though but I think it was Track

How 'bout humble or happy for Sam?

Remember seeing this live on TV when it happened. My family had a similar reaction to the crowd when Da Silva cleared that final vault. That's the great thing about the Olympics, it brings everyone together and everyone can celebrate the amazing achievements of athletes. No politics or country partisanship involved :)

I watched this live on tv, probably the most exciting field event of the Rio Olympics!

It was disrespectful and it is sad that the host country has this type of public. They has to know that it was a competition, so there was no reason to disrespect lavillenie in that way, when the only thing he was trying ti do was to defend his tittle. Just because Thiago was doing incredible that way there was no reason to do that to renauld. It was one of the worst parts of the games. Ps: I'm not French btw

A cada salto, a galera ia se animando, tipo, como assim um Brasileiro ganhar medalha nesse esporte que quase ninguem pratica. There's a medal called Pierre de Coubertin. It's given to athletes who exemplify sportmanship and olympic spirit.

One of the reasons why I remember this moment so vividly, is the genuine joy of Sam Kendricks over the performances of others. A true Olympian.

This was THE BEST athletic moment of 2016 Olympics!!

Braz Da Silva deserved the title, but I really like USA Sam Kendricks for his superb sportsmanship in applauding his two opponents who both finished above him. Can't say the same for the defending champion Renaud Lavillenie who was not as gracious in defeat and in fact appeared so sure and cocky of himself. As it ended, Braz Da Silva broke the Olympic record whilst Renaud couldn't even break his own personal best.

you are right, he couldn't jump his best because they keep blood samples for at least 8 years and the loser smelly arrogant lavillenie needed the same dose of drugs he used to steal Bubka's record.

I don't understand how Renaud looked cocky. He holds the world record for this event. Obviously he was expecting to clinch the gold medal and by looking sad because he didn't get gold meant that he was cocky and so sure of himself? Dude come on. Imaging someone winning Usain Bolt, you're gonna tell me he is not gonna look upset? SMH.

I am always scared that they are gonna break😂

This sport is actually really impressive

I remembered watching this sport but I forgot what it was called I was like to my sister, "Hey, what's that sport where you pole vault over the bar?" "Oh yeah pole vault!"

This is insane to me! I feel like I’d either snap the pole or go back the other way and get badly injured. Huge respect!! Especially to the Brazilian who had his personal best twice and an OR in front of a home crowd at the Olympics and won gold!!

Epic! The new olympic record, man! Congrats!

That was the most amazing vault competition I've ever seen! Battling the rain, the home country has to set a double PR to achieve a huge upset, 2 olympic records set. Awesome. My pole vault style has got to be closer to the aggression of Polish guy and the between jump antics of Sam Kendricks.

Renaud fait parti des très rares champions olympique à la perche, à avoir glané une seconde médaille pour commencer. La seule chose positive a été le respect du perchiste brésilien venu le soutenir et lui parlé, pas de ses compatriotes malheureusement.

Rafael dans le stade ils étaient une majorité, ce pays avant ces JO ne connaissait que très peu l’athlétisme et encore moins la perche, et la réaction du public a été et restera à jamais une honte aussi bien pendant le concours qu’ensuite sur le podium. Un tel manque de respect envers un athlète aussi doué que gentil juste parce que le brésilien de service était son adversaire principal ça n’a juste pas lieu d’etre. Et le fait que certains brésiliens se permettent en commentaires de la video de dire que « c’est bien fait pour ce sale français arrogant » montre encore plus cette ignorance et est juste à vomir...

Esse dia foi sensacional, relembrando esse momento ❤️💜

Probably to avoid the nonstop whinning from ppl who thinks that had any influence whatsoever on the result and that it wasn't the fact that Thiago jumped 6.03 and Lavillenie didn't that mattered. But having finished watching it, they didn't actualy cut it, the boos were very mild so in most transmitions they couldn't be heard realy, they did cut him giving the crowd the thumbs down tough.

Because Brazilians have a mentality that is very much influenced by football (Soccer). They do not respect other athletes than their own which of course is totally against the olympic spirit

This is one of my favorite Olympics moments!! Just amazing!

Such an insane sport, its like ski jumping. No sane person would ever do it, but we've seen it so often that no one thinks about how crazy it really is... Chapeau!

I've never seen pole volr before but when they get really high no matter what the team I get super hyped :)

Well you have to have pretty good upper strength and have pretty good speed as well. Most of all practice your form. Your core needs to be tight as well. I would hope that your school has practice poles. If they do practice your form as much as possible with those. It takes lots of mechanics to accomplish vaulting. Just don't give up. There are plenty of instructional videos on line to watch and help you. Once you get the hang of it it's a big rush to try and keep improving. I hope this helps. Just remember don't give up it will get frustrating at times. But it's real fun once it all comes together and you clear that first height. One thing to remember don't ever be afraid of it. Good luck and have fun with it.
