Right Torsions: Teeth, Bodily Pain, and Why I Needed an Acrylic Splint

The patterned positions of the head and neck, and how it can cause chronic pain, are by far the most difficult aspect of Postural Restoration to understand.
The simple fact is this: a number of chronic back pain issues, particularly in the SI joints and mid-back, are due to what's occurring at the neck and head. Some of it is due to malocclusion, meaning a bad "bite".
Compromised movement of the head on the neck will compromise movement of the entire spine all the way down to the sacrum.
It will also compromise the ability to breathe without your diaphragms and promotes accessory breathing patterns.

    I’ve been trying to figure out my issues for years. Always felt like my body was weirdly torqued, and I struggled to use my left leg and right shoulder. Nothing helped, then started doing PRI exercises for a couple months and it’s helped, but still felt tight and struggled to feel the exercises correctly. Yesterday I was chewing gum and decided to try to only chew with my left side of jaw. My whole body finally relaxed. Now I’m looking into my jaw position and getting the lower jaw to slide to the left.

    I've only just begun to watch videos here and learn. So much things! I was born left-handed and forced to be right-handed and have done (unbeknownst to me) stomach gripping my entire life because I was teased about my overweight as a child. So, sucking in my stomach all my life has ruined me. I didn't even know how to breathe properly. (I'm 52 the end of this month.) I just found out that my pelvic floor is weak due to the stomach gripping and started doing exercises to relax my abdominal muscles while learning how to take full, deep breaths. It doesn't help that I am overweight. Even though I've lost over 50 pounds, I'm still at 250 and have hanging skin on my lower abdomen that throws its two cents in the ring by pulling my lumbar into hyper curvature. This perfect storm has resulted in such severe low back pain that I am basically incapacitated. I look forward to learning all about this and plan on seeing the practitioner that is in my hometown. You have no idea how relieved I was there was someone here in my city! Thank you so so much for making this information available!

    Thanks for your help I have a cross bite bracing mechanism that I’ve never noticed until your videos. I’m always struggled getting onto my right side from a previous ACL injury but it makes sense now

    @@Patrick-rr2qw the occlusal splint is usually around $350-400 they are very durable and last a very long time. Compared to cracked teeth that will require crowns, it's cost effective for me.

    Hi Neal, I need to echo so many other comments. Wow, between this , the R brachial Chain, and a couple other videos of yours a whole new understanding of all my issues kind of 'integrated' for me. Yes, I have the Right Torsion Pattern (actually it seems all your videos have applied to my body at one time or another, everything all connected). And it's so true, almost impossible to understand without experiencing. "You cant feel your body because you are not grounded" "compression of the cranial nerve...thats where life happens)", these are not exaggerated statements. I have been experiencing 'dissociative disorder' for decades as well as debilitating pain. Through relentless pursuit of feeling the 'felt sense' of being alive again I have discovered that my 'mental' recovery is in the body, ..7 years sports PT, yoga, pranyama, psychologist. Why did your channel pop up in my feed? I recently integrated the understanding of fascial planes and had purchased Tom Meyers 'Anatomy Trains'. Please, let us praise the algorithm Gods. The internet brings what one seeks out 😊 I am so grateful for your style of teaching this very complex yet somehow simple school.

    I can assure you, if you truly have a cranial strain pattern, the vast majority of my videos will pertain to you. The cranium, and whatever is "torquing" it, is the key to unlocking the rest of the body. My lower body, where all the pain was, was not the issue. It was all jaw/teeth and vision. Hopefully you can find a PRI therapist to help.

    Hi! Great video++ I have tight neck muscles in the left side, straight neck, exagerated lower back lordisis. My jaw shifts to the left side when opening the mouth and clench in the left side too (at night) Why the jaw shifts to the left please ?

    Hey mate love your videos. I had an injury when I was a kid. Short story I fell down and put my teeth through my lower lip and not until now I realised I must have injured my jaw in the process. It’s my left side of my jaw that’s the problem not my right. I can’t touch my teeth on my right side but I can on my left. I’ve been losing balance with my feel waking etc. I walk with my outside of my heels and when you look at my work boots it’s clear that I’m hiring the ground outside of my foot. Could I have left side issues effected my body and could acrylic help even though it’s on my left side not my right? Also who do I see just a dentist or a specialised dentist?

    Funny, what you describe is what I am feeling since years my neck and head is always under tension and so the rest of my body. I do have a splint but I think it is to short cause it does not Cover my teeth back in jaw.

    Hi Neal,thank you for posting this.[excuse my english ] I have difficulty achieving neutrality … I’m progressing ,everyday i feel something new (a muscle, conscience of a pattern…) I found that i had moderate astigmatism on both eyes,when i wore glasses it made a huge difference! Today i discover that i cannot have a good bite on my left teeth! When i put something (a piece of paper ) between my upper and lower left molar(there is a gap between them) i feel like its better! Could it work ?

    Thanks again Neal. Same 3 of my least favorite pains as well. Years of tearing feet, SI battles & that tricky train wreck of spasms triggered in that 1 lil spot behind the scapula & becoming whiplash for a few days. Perfectly explained neck compensations matching my experience & I hope the road less traveled for others. I think noticed my recent cervical twists in tandem with jaw dislocation (rt SCM et al) rt vision narrowing (12-4 o'clock), eyes casting down, unfavorable sympathetic-ns switching (rt psoas?/gb meridian? dominance) loss of "connection" through sacrum & pelvic floor, left side numbness/disconnect, then pelvic collapse & all joints popping loose to protect essential functions. Maybe shouldn't have tried to "release" so much 🤦‍♂️ Pre-PRI Epiphany trial & error process i suppose. Really was just shooting for bottom of exhale to reset breathing. Hopefully i & others know better now. Appreciate you Neal🙏

    @L W @Kcm Man93 Yes, improvements! 🙏 A year ago I reached max compensation & my body reset, leaving me to relearn everything. Frankly, PRI has it nailed. After last post, I began w/ a PRI Trainer who filled in blanks to correct my ... everything, along w/ these channels & the PRI site. The Scary, Weird, Agonizing, Painful experiences all became simple & are moving towards balance. Re: Eyes, they need to rotate, blink & see ground with minimal strain. PRI's breathing techniques cover most of it. I feel Aternate Nostril Breathing is critical. Personally helpful for ANB: -Toungue tip flat (like "N" of No") between incisors w/ sides curled upward is ideal. Tip to L incisor may be helpful. -Hahhh exhale through back of throat then back of ribcage. -Grrradually allow eyes to rotate downward seeing nostril-blocking finger. Gently blink relaxing face. As Left/Right pressure is balanced, eyes see nose more evenly ( blending the brain's L/R picture ) 30 seconds is helpful, 3 minutes is perfect! *** www.posturalrestoration.com/pri-resources/pri-living/breathing *** Also personally helpful are yogic eye movement practices. Random bits: Rotating eyes up, down, L, R, & around a clock in both directions & allowing them to relax. Peripheral vision practice is a huge relaxer, following finger, w/ Eyes only. 1 eye closed seeing nose then up. Closing/opening from each corner. Eyes left w/ toungue tip right, reverse. Toungue feeling all teeth, etc... We mentioned the spinal train wreck that gets whiplashy. I see as mostly from vertebral wedging & diaphragm impingement, like L4, T12 & ⬆️. Cross-lateral compensations make it seem unsolvable. Breath is my game-changer, by establishing ZOA & creating respiratory pressure the back unwinds & strengthens, allowing a stable center to relearn movements. Seldom mentioned Pre-Practice bits: -Rub hands, Big Exhales, Standing Walking, Reverse Moonwalking (not really a "thing"). Rub & feel each finger, move & feel each toe. Exhale long & slow several times attempting to reach a resting pause, then allowing natural breath to resume. - Awareness: Hear, See, Touch Slowly, Feel, Taste Sensory activity calms everything. - Note Allowing. Opposite of Resisting. Now begin....

    @@kcmman9323 The most active years seem to have been in custom foot orthotics. Waited to do exercises for a while before getting new orthotics. I'll have them soon & see if they hurt or help this time. Feet, ankles, shins, knees etc all realign with pattern changes. My feet are only as good as the inhale & exhale.     I have had TMJ my entire life. I grind like a beast. I tried an acrylic mouthguard and I woke up one morning with my upper jaw and lower jaw completely out of synch. My face was all crooked. I had to go to a chiropractor an d man was it painful to put the jaw back in line. So I’ve said never again to the mouthguard but i see how it could help. Im just too leery to try it again.

    You could try e-mail Postural Restoration Institute. Perhaps they keep a list of dentists from around the country who have taken a PRI seminar. Otherwise, find a PRI certified PT. Many will have a dentist that they collaborate with.

    Hey Neal, I just saw your videos and wanted to thank you for your hard work. I for myself am a medical student from germany who has muscle tensions around the head and neck area for about 13 years now (I am 28 now) leading to extreme exhaustion. My issues are that I have pain in my upper left premolar (25) which hurts when I bite in a certain position. It is extremely painful yet dentists dont see any damage at the tooth. I had braces which moved my jaw forward when I was a teenager and also a root canal surgery where the dentist didnt really restore the tooth so I didnt have contact on my lower right first molar (46) for several years. the tooth was restored 10 years later but my occlusion is absolutely uncomfotable. I feel like my bite is not habitual anymore and I have to tension muscles to make it acceptable. Now I suffer from muscle tensions all the time and I am exhausted. Dentists cant help me as they say things are fine. I got a nightguard against clenching (but I am sure clenching isnt my problem), yet nothing helps. Yet I just dont know what the source of my problems is. It could be the head and neck area that lead to tooth pain and a wrong occlusion. Or my teeth are the problem. I am considering to extract that hurting tooth for myself and see what happens as I dont see any help anymore.

    Your best bet it to see a PRI specialist that will help you and most likely they know dentist that work with them. So they can fix you up. I'm actually working on it I've seen a specialist in new York and he told me that my body is in a patho pattern. And it's all coming from my bite. I wish you the best of luck

    Hi Neal! I’m located in NJ and have been dealing with very similar issue that you have described. I have been working with an Atlas Orthogonal, TMJ Dentist, and Osteopath. I seem to be stuck in this never ending cycle of SVT, breathing issues, neck cracking sounds, along with other issues. I would to get more info on your therapy’s and if there is a dentist you recommend? My TMJ joint seems to be ok from MRI but my bite was hanging on my one tooth on the right. I also was diagnosed with C1 instability. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Stay away from Atlas! I did this and it made things so much worse. The top down approach is completely flawed! PRI is the ultimate solution! I am travelling to Nebraska to Hruska Clinic for prime program. I tried nearly every discipline including Atlas Orthogonal! What a scam!

    Question, how did you unlock your pelvis when you were still dealing with your crossbite? I’m currently dealing with a crossbite on top of crowded teeth on my lower jaw and my posture is constantly brining me pain. I have cervical and lumbar spine scoliosis effecting my arms and legs. I’m currently on orthodontic treatment to correct my crossbite, but not sure what to do in the meantime because it’s hard to do practically anything with so much discomfort 😅

    Hi Neal. Several years ago my dog knocked my jaw, I wasn’t prepared for it and my jaw was loose and it messed up my bite and had cause pain and some joint damage. The pain has generally gone away. Some crackling when I yawn and eat. Now and then some pain if I eat something too chewy. Anyway. I’m thinking back to when my pattern started and it might be around this time. I did get a splint last year but it’s made to fit the top teeth. Seems like the same concept though.     I really can't speculate, but any injury can contribute to the patterns. If you're not in pain, that's a good thing.

    I am a recently retired dentist that practiced for over 45 years. I have taken numerous courses on TMD diagnosis and treatment. I am curious if you have followed Robert Walker DC and his program "Chirodontics". I have taken numerous courses from him and tried to incorporate many of his protocols into my practice. I have had great successes and failures and but I could not readily predict what the outcome would be even though the presentation were very similar. The starting formula in a simplistic sense includes leveling the plane of the maxilla with an orthotic and then creating a mandibular splint

    From a PRI perspective, it comes down to whether a cranium/neck are "neutral" or not. If the temporal bones/sphenoid/occiput are in a "patterned" state (Right TMCC pattern has an internally rotated temporal bone while the left is externally rotated), that will influence the position of the TMJ and thus influence the position and function of all the anterior neck musculature. My thought would be that if you are using orthotics and splints on individuals who are still patterned, it may not have the desired outcome because the temporal bones are still slightly deviated and the neck would likely not be in a neutral position either. This issue of "neutrality", while not unique to PRI, is used differently in PRI because it's recognized as a total body issue, not just a local TMJ issue. The Left AIC and right BC patterns will eventually influence the position of the neck, cranium, and TMJs because of the respiratory influences of dysfunctional neck breathing (in particular the SCMs influence on the temporal bones).

    @@NealHallinan What is your take and PRIs take on why we have to go through all these protocols and exercises and inhibitions and orthotic feet and dental interventions and SI stabilizations and hip replacements and shoulder replacements, and chiropractic adjustments. I think we have devolved and we are finding ways to minimize the negative impact of structural degradation. So basically, what do you suppose creates all this need for therapy?

    I currently have an acrylic mouthguard that i wear on my upper teeth, but I don’t feel like it’s doing much, so I’ll probably need to have another one made to wear on my lower teeth. What about crowns or tooth implants? I have lost my wisdom tooth and molar on my right side and its fucked me over so bad. I can’t do anything.

    Hi Neal, what are your thoughts on fillings for teeth? Does getting fillings done create more neurosensory tension in the body and hence create more extension posture as well as Left AIC pattern?

    From what i‘ve understood, fillings are being done to align the jaw even more perfectly after wearing the acrylic splint. So it should be a good thing. Also, u can get them removed if the jaw shifts in a perfect position by itself.

    Perhaps. Sometimes malocclusion can cause major problems. You never really know until you work with a professional who knows what they are doing.

    Hi! I’ve been going to PRI with a great therapist for a about a year now. In my first session we found i needed a new eye prescription. Since then we keep making some progress and then everything falls apart & I’ve actually start to get more pain locations… she had another therapist look at me and they determined I have an occlusion, TMCC pattern, & need to get a mouth piece. Is this common that the TMCC pattern can prevent progress from other locations? (My pelvis and back)? Is it still a long process after I get the mouth piece or will it be relatively quick compared the the year I’ve spent in PRI. Also, I can’t get the mouth piece for over a month… will I get benefit during that month at sessions or should I just wait until I have the mouth piece?

    Any time occlusion is involved, things can get very tricky. The jaw and neck muscles influence everything underneath. It's always about keeping the neck relaxed. You can feel like you are making progress and then everything can go backwards. It's frustrating, I know. I really can't comment on your personal situation because I know nothing about your situation. You'll just have to follow the recommendations of your therapist.

    I’m in Benzodiazepine Withdrawal. Was on Benzos for muscle tightness in whole upper body after back at base of ribs ‘cluncked’ and made whole upper back rigid following S1/L5 laminectomy to help very severe sciatica and dis that got into spinal canal. Since 2001 the tightness in mid and upper back and shoulders and neck never left but in withdrawal it is unbearable. No position is bearable. Now all meds paradoxical. My bit has been out for years but now lower teeth are forward in front of upper teeth and jaw off to side. Back teeth are touching all the time. Front teeth further apart. All from neck being pushed into worse forward head posture from muscles tightening - T1/2 have fused in a hump, T10/11 fused pushing ribs forward and up - bad flare. In the past when the mid part at base of ribs (feels like on right side) has cluncked again whole upper back has released and lower right lumbar muscles gone flaccid but legs work better. Now even buttocks so rigid can’t even lie down with legs up on pillows. Can PRI help if you have joints that have fused in wrong position and have possible failed back surgery? Would a splint be a good place to start if the back teeth are now forced into each other like jaw joint has collapsed down and back? My jaw is so tight if I try to open mouthit snaps shut and pulls on temporalis. I am in U.K. and largely housebound. Do you do online video consults so I can ask you more questions? Whole body is rigid and twisted.

    Neal can starting Invisalign "lock you up" especially in the beginning phase where the aligners are super tight and causing headache? Can Invisalign make you neutral cuz it will correct a cross bite or malclusion (overcrowding) ?

    Extracted right lower molar tooth 25 years ago without any implant since. Could that be causing neck stiffness, right SI pain, L45 disc herneation, left hamstring tightness, bilateral tinnitus? Tinnitus can get louder, modulated, with tounge protrusion. Thanks for your videos.

    Correct me if I’m wrong but from my understanding, you use a splint to prevent your body going back to old habit of stabilisation once you have stabilised correctly using PRI techniques. But once your body is correctly stabilised, your bite may change and therefore you might need to change the size of the splint to accommodate the change in bite?

    I did a PRI technique to get out of the torsion. But I do practice self cranial sacral, I just feel for where I'm experiencing restriction. It can often be found at the intersection of the sphenoid/temporal/parietal bones.

    God, every single video, every single thing you say I’m shaking my head ‘yes’ & I don’t know whether to be happy or more depressed. I have a pattern that is similar to yours or worse. Pain every, single, day.. all day. Head feels twisted, left neck muscles giant and flexed 24/7. Pelvic tilt. All my weight, all 207lbs feels like it’s on my right heel. Front of right thigh in a constant dull burn from the hip down. Inflammation EVERYWHERE, mostly right side of body. Jaw feels totally unaligned, feel all my right teeth come down on top of each other and left side feels like a V, if you can imagine it. It is so fucking miserable and has been since I was about 13yo. I’m 28yo now & have basically been a slave to this my entire life. I can’t even think & have zero energy because I guess my body just exhausts itself trying to just breathe everyday. Mental capacity is overridden by the thought of ‘correcting’ myself every 3 minutes. Please help me. Can you tell me what you think I should start doing right away? I work 60hr weeks and I’m not sure I have time to see a specialist right now, perhaps some at home remedies? I’ve done weight shifting and breathing exercises & they help so much but my jaw & neck muscles are just stuck. There’s nothing I can do about it.

    hey neal - so i've been doing the basic 4 excercises from your website and i've been feeling improvement in the left AIC. i also had known for years that my jaw was awry but i was never able to understand why. i'm in korea so i can't get access to a PRI practioner here unfortunately.. anyways i was wondering if i continued with the PRI movements would i see improvements in my awry jaw even without the mouth guard?

    hello Jaewoo, fellow Korean here. I've also been aware of my tilted jaw, thinking that teeth misalignment/jaw problems was the underlying cause for bad posture, but I now strongly believe it's simply another byproduct of bad posture. By incorporating mewing concepts, it would make sense that changes in jaw structure would occur as a compensatory effect where the upper body tries to remain neutral on an unstable lower body. This would create tension all over including the neck and most likely unequal force in jaw structure, like the mandible and tongue pressure on the palate. I think being in this prolonged state would most likely cause crooked teeth and tmd. I think it is possible to improve

    Not that many, to be honest. Some do have dental or visual issues that keep them patterned, but they aren't actually torsioned.

    At 17:15 you mention the right SCM shifting the jaw forward creating occlusion. Wouldn't this create occlusion on the left side? I don't see how it could be shifted forward but blocking the neurovasclular bundle in the TMJ. If the right SCM pushes the right side of the jaw forward, wouldn't this rotation create more space in the right TMJ and an occlusion in the right? Thanks!

    I have tight right neck SCM having tight right back trap inside soldier . Lose left SCM and total left side body is very lose as compare to right and have also left neck pain left daltoid pain sometimes and having radiating sensation on left arm and hand. My MRI report of spine is okie no disc problem everything is ok. Only straight neck or straight lumbosacral spine and I am working on it doing flatback exercises since 6 months have been passed also using neck and lumbar wedge. But the left side neck pain gone worse day by day causing rotation problem to left side. What do you think what posture problem I am suffering from and please suggest me some exercise. Thankyou

    You are describing your issue exactly: tight right side of the body and loose left side of the body. If you are in the US then you'll need to find a PRI credentialed therapist.You'll need help.

    There is research in regards to occlusion and postural stability/sway. You won't find anything about it like the way PRI talks about it, though. Ron (the founder) just read the research and realized it was all part of the overall patterns. Patterned people will likely feel too much right molars, and often left canines. So we generally need to re-sense left molars (left heel) and right canines (right arch). Without an even bite, it may not happen. That's why I got Invisalign. My right canines were displaced.

    @@NealHallinan Thank you for replying. yeah my teeth are almost the same, i also sleep ONLY on my left side and do EVERYTHING with my right. been stuck in an RIGHT BC + LEFT AIC pattern for a decade or so. trying to stay in a LEFT BC + RIGHT AIC pattern for most of the day, because even if i'm in the LEFT BC + RIGHT AIC pattern, my body always instinctually reverts to the RIGHT BC + LEFT AIC pattern when i'm anxious or around people. (only just realized i had the AIC patterns back to front).

    Neal, did you get invisalign before or after you got the splint? If the splint helps achieve neutral wouldn't it be best to have it after making sure the bite is even, i.e. not all edge to edge incisors and no contact of premolars ?

    please tell me what is your take on PROLOTHERAPY, I’ve got a lot of your symptoms and have been diagnosed with moderate to severe neck instability, left and right shoulder instability and my jugular vein at times is 0 blood flow causing massive headaches and eye pain, I also have EHLERS DANLOS SYNDROME making everything worse.     I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome as well, along with cranio-cervical instability. I am wondering if you have had any luck with PRI since posting this a year ago? I'm considering giving it a try, but I too, am nervous about the ligament issues that come with EDS. Have you gone forward with prolotherapy? I have been looking into that as well as stem cell therapy.

    The Standing Alternating Reciprocal Expansion is the standard exercise to de-torsion. From there it is up to the therapist to tell you what to do. People have different challenges. However, a previously torsioned person will benefit from pretty much any PRI technique because all techniques teach your body how to re-stabilize and move in your newly de-torsioned body.

    Can you be a right torsion if you are not a PEC? I.e you are still just Left AIC/ Right BC (which I am verified by testing from many PRI practiconers including those from the PRIME program in Lincoln). I have glasses and MOOO splint from them thay get me neutral on a table but my face looks like a right torsion with a midline shifted right. Still can't seem to figure out my leg length issues even with my glasses and splint. Curious because from my understanding really on PEC people are right torsions? Is it possible to be right torsion and not be PEC?
