Ridley Scott Tells Us Why He Directed Raised by Wolves

Ойын-сауық

Almost every day of the week, someone will tell you that you need to watch [insert series]. And they are probably right. Some of the things now streaming on television are incredible and the line between movies and television is thisclose to being destroyed.
Which brings me to the new HBO Max sci-fi series Raised by Wolves.
If you haven’t yet heard of the series, the first two episodes were helmed by Ridley Scott (his first time directing something for television since the earliest days of his career), centering on two androids tasked with raising a new human population on a mysterious planet far from Earth. While there is so much more to this story, the less you know the better.
I’ve actually seen the first six episodes (there are ten in the first season) and absolutely loved them. Each episode reveals more and more about the world and characters and it’s one of those special series where everything from the production design to the performances are fantastic. I cannot recommend the series enough.
With the first three episodes now streaming on HBO Max, I recently got to speak with Ridley Scott and creator Aaron Guzikowski about making the show. During the brief interview, Scott revealed his reasons for helming the first two episodes, why he loved the story, how he went about designing the visuals of the world, and Guzikowski talked about pitching the network his five-year plan.
Raised by Wolves stars Travis Fimmel, Niamh Algar, Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, Winta McGrath, Matias Varela, Felix Jamieson, Ethan Hazzard, Jordan Loughran, Aasiya Shah, and Ivy Wong.

Before I even saw that Ridley directed it and paid attention to that fact... something looked very different about this sci-fi show. He has a footprint that no other director can match and that's what makes him great. there are other great directors out there who have their own niche... But Ridley Scott is a director God of sci-fi.

I've always seen Ridley Scott as the best director for sci fi, better than even Stanley Kubrick ... as usual, geniuses are often misunderstood by the average people of their time because they are so far ahead of the general population, their works are often misconstrued and spat upon ... its no different with this generation. It takes time for the general population to catch up with them, its very sad but its a recurring theme of human history ...

Based on the first three episodes this tv show is pretty incredible, not just visually, but the concept, the characters and the story as well. It has Ridley's fingerprints all over it, sometimes you feel like you're watching a Prometheus spin-off, yet you don't have the sense that it's the same old shit.

Carl Jung was accused of trying to revive Mythraism and create a New Age religion by scholar Richard Noll. This was not true, Carl Jung simply believed the religious function was hard wired in human beings and the only way to overcome the negative aspects of religion was to become conscious of the religious function. While atheists like Richard Dawkins believe all religious ideas are dangerous. I think this basic contemporary debate is at the heart of the story line. Mythraic religion had an older version from Persia which we know very little about and a newer version that was popular in the Roman armies.

Ariel Popperl I never heard of Evola until you wrote this. Interesting. But what I am pointing out is that Jung believed that atheists had unconscious religious beliefs because religious ideas are part of our human nature. And that we are fooling ourselves when we believe our rationality can have us completely transcend our religious instincts. So the whole series seems to be about this blurry territory.

  • @matthewkopp2391

baba galacticus Yes that is true, and the content of story is often partly about fact like you could say "in the beginning the Creator Campion created mother and father. And mother and father came from the sky. And mother was a virgin who gave birth to six children. And yet only on one child survived who was named Campion who was named after the Creator." And as religious as it sounds it is still based on facts. But story also contains a psychological phenomenology, ontological, teleological and ethical aspects too. The competing ethics. Campion advocates vegetarian diet like Cain, while Paul advocates eating meat like Abel. Campions ideal would be like that Jain religion. While Paul would be Hunter or Shepard religious ethics. All of this then can be coded in a religious story. The point is that the stories themselves are not irrational at all but are prone to interpretations that can be subjective or dogmatic. The question would be can there be true atheism when we are storytelling animals. Is the dismissal of religious ideas short sighted?

Good point. I have seen a documentary showing How Mithraism started in Persia and then expanded to west to Romans. Mithra or Mehr as persians call it today was the sun. A lot of this religions element stayes in the next religion coming after it in Persia called Zoroastrianism, like the belief that fire purifies everything and if a person is not guilty fire wont harm them. Also when Mithraism went to west some of its element stayed in Christianity as well. Its very interesting how it could be the base of so many other religions coming after it, I love how in this show they are bringing it back as a new religion, with hints of its ancient roots.

Really interesting show - Ridley Scott is truly in his element with this material. I will say despite having some really well-written characters and interesting concepts there are a few surface level elements that detract from the “realistic sci-fi” if you will, or relatability. This happens all the time with religion/faith and cinema/television. There is no depth of nuance to the religious side. The characters we follow/root for are undercover atheists, so you dont have any conflicting or diverse opinions that challenge the atheistic view. Why would anyone bother believing in this faith/religion? I can imagine some rebuttals of “thats how religion is” which is lazy. Creating strawmen is unrealistic. There is a reason that some of the religions and faiths people follow today are as old as recorded history. There is a reason people spend their whole lives getting multiple degrees to study them, and a reason that so many people come to faith. So far the only reasons the show has given us is a coping method for death, or to a lesser degree, conformity. The way the war is portrayed is as well. First the theme itself of “remove religion and you have no war” is already pretty hollow as history proves that wrong - and even in religious wars, religion is always just a cover for some alternative motive. BUT in the war, you have the religious, who are molded most off of the Catholic church as the powerful, dominating force. The empire if you will. Meanwhile the atheists are much more of the “rebels”. This isnt 1100 AD. The catholic church doesnt have that kind of power anymore and it never will. In our current day, in western society, atheism being the underdog is simply no longer relatable. I get that any adjustments to those elements would alter the story entirely… but at least throw in some more complex ideas and characters. The best stories always have complex characters that are both good and bad on both sides. They have conflicting elements that make it hard to choose a side. This show does a good job of that with its central characters but that should be broadened to the characters. The strawman portrayals of religion are just embarrassing- especially knowing that they are primarily pointed at the catholics (im not even catholic btw). Its like great message you are preaching to the choir, but its never going to get across to the actual people you want it to because all youve done is copied the visual cues and left out the most important element: the soul. Thatll never get fixed in the cinema world because people love to criticize more than they do actually investigating, researching, and pursuing truth & accuracy.
