This example is on a Craftsman riding mower but the diagnosis procedure is the same for all riding mowers. This mower had one defined click when trying to start, even with a new battery. I go through the diagnosis procedure and the process of replacing the solenoid.

Thank you for this video! You speak clearly and slowly enough for my “non-mechanical” brain to follow and learn from. I am grateful that you also took off the gas tank. That helped me see the area more clearly. Thanks again!

You got the facts and job done , taking the gas tank out first would have made this a 10 minute video instead of 25 minutes , good communication throughout

Great video, my 20 year old craftsman wouldn’t start. I never thought the battery was bad because it was reading 12.5 volts. I took it to have it load tested, it was bad. Replaced it and it fixed the problem.

Only one of the spade terminals is ground. The other one is from the starter switch (and is +ve). This is what energises the coil inside the solenoid when you turn the key.

My question. It doesn't matter which is which. But why do I have power on the big terminals without cranking

Thank you!! I thought solenoid were cylindrical, on the starter. Baffled! Followed the big red cable from starter. Found it attached to a small square box behind a big metal 'plate at the back near the battery, that the grass collector fixes to. Only took 1/2 hr to get it off!!! Who designs these things??(It's a Viking, bought by Stihl. Crap). I was hoping it was this that was broken. Testing it off the machine it gave a "single, strong click", and thought this was the bad news that it was working, and I'd have to keep searching. But viewed your vid which brings good -- great news!! Thanks for your work!

A very good example of how NOT to work on anything. Fithy machine, not even blown off, Carb open to whatever might fall into it. Parts going in a pile of leaves. Do it in the Garage! Order the correct part. One of the small wires comes from the Ignition Switch and is Positive not a Ground. Turning the key to Start engergizes a magnetic coil which pulls a large disc or bar across the two large internal terminals and provides 12VDC to the Starter

lt2000 , have you found that after market starters have a flat tab to one side of one of the screws and will not fit into its spot on mower? Do you grind that tab off, to get it to slide all the way into its space?

You either have something going on with the starter Bendix not throwing the great or low battery voltage getting to the starter.

Check for continuity from the ignition switch to the coil wire. The wire color should be the same on both ends. If it does not read zero ohms with the blades off and the park brake on, check your safety switches.
