Thank you Gordon, for some reason in my 61 years I have never heard a better explanation for how a solenoid actually functions. Your the Man!

Hi Gordon, G'day, Paul from Australia here. Thank you for all the valuable information in this video. I had to change the soleniod on my ride-on mower and was sold a 4 post to replace the 3 post. Replaced it ok but nothing until I watched your video explaining about the ground (earth) wire. None came with the kit so I had to build one and hey presto! The mower now starts first turn of the ignition switch. Thanks again for your video. Well done!

Glad to hear it helped Paul. I had the same problem as you when I changed mine on my zero turn but as a former auto mechanic, I had the tools and experience to find out what to do pretty quick. This style makes it universal where as the 3 contact is only good on a grounded metal frame unless you add a ground wire and mount it under the mounting ears on a plastic mount area. Always good to hear where people are from, not sure which way to go to Australia from here in the middle of the States, east or west, maybe the same distance either way.

Thank you for your EXCELLENT video contribution to the DIY community. If I may suggest to your viewers (and provide further assistance), I would like to suggest them to check the voltage coming to the solenoid terminal (the one that is not grounded) to ensure that the starter switch is not defective and actually a 12V voltage is present on the quick connect terminal prior to the solenoid removal and replacement. They can simply use a voltmeter or a small 12V bulb to make sure that actually the current would be supplied to the solenoid when the user cranks the starter switch position, and then proceed to the starter solenoid replacement if the voltage to the energizing terminal is present. I hate to see after replacing the solenoid they find out that the starter switch is actually defective and not the solenoid. Hope this is helpful to your audience, and God bless you for your initiative to make this video.

A very clear explanation, which I appreciate, and the camera angles were perfect the whole time you were working and explaining how the circuits worked. Thanks for this video - I'd hate to cross wire something and burn up my lawn tractor. On my old Snapper, the wire from the solenoid to the starter is black, not red, and I can't find my owner's manual; Snapper's website is of little help in getting manuals for older models, from the days before Briggs & Stratton acquired Snapper, so I really appreciate your video.

  • @shawnrobinson5662

Hi, Gordan. Thanks for the video. I recently replaced a 3 post with a 4 post and my MTD still would not start. With the 3 post solenoid there was already a “Green wire” from the negative cable to the battery that was grounded to the screws on the back of the solenoid and body of the mower. Replacing with a 4 post there is the additional wire that connects to the solenoid as you show and is grounded to the back of the solenoid and the body of the mower. Both wires are grounded and the mower doesn’t start. Should I not ground one of the wires or how should I properly connect the 4 post? Thanks

My cub cadet lt1045 has the same setup under the seat. I just replaced the selanoid, the starter, the fuse, and the battery with all new ones and yet I still get absolutely no power at all when I turn the key. The blade is up and the parking break is on and I already tried the disconnecting the seat sensor trick and still nothing. I just ordered a new ignition switch as well. If that also fails, would you have any idea what else it could be?

Wish my Huskee was that easy to fix. 6 days now trying to get mine running with no luck. All I did was drop the deck to replace the belts and steering shaft...put everything back on and wouldn't crank. Bought new battery and solenoid....still nothing. It'll start if I use a screwdriver on both solenoid terminals but not with the key in the ignition. Paying $80 a week to have my 2acre yard mowed is getting expensive real fast.

I can't foe the life of me get to my solenoid on troy bilt bronco....its around battery compartment area to mounted to frame but it's not directly behind and I can't remove from the outside...do I have to remove frame or plastic middle cover in order to gain access to this little compartment area?

It really shouldn't be too hard to get to it, maybe you have a friend or neighbor to help you find it, or ask your mechanic to look at it. I can't tell you without seeing it.

Ok I got it out...now I tested it and it's fine...getting 12 volts to it and out of it...so next thing I want to test is starter cable and then starter....how would I test starter cable to make sure it is not dropping voltage due to bad copper strands? How to perform a drop test of the cable?

You need to bypass the solenoid and hit the starter directly with cables, if it cranks then, then you need to chase the problem in the wiring, dirty ground, or other contacts, ignition switch, safety switches etc.
