I'm used to larger, corded routers kzread.infoUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

Thank you for a tool review that is actually useful! Thanks for the demonstration of using the router in a real world application.

i love using this versatile tool. one thing that is off is the quick release lever that is still kind of loose once it's locked. there were times that the depth changes up/dn during operation while the bit is working on the wood surface. there's a small nut that you can tighten though. I just find that it's something you may need to adjust out of the box. Also, the motor retention spring that holds the thread depth screw is kinda loose too. I dont know any adjustment for that.

I see the wrench does not have straight sides. They are curved inwards. I have the corded model and changing bit is almost impossible because the wrench can not turn enough inside the housing/base. I had to completely remove the housing just to change the bit. Many others also complained about that in other videos. But just 2 weeks ago, I took my straight-sided wrench to the grinder, and simply reshaped it till it had the sides gouged out like yours. Now I can easily turn it enough to change bits without having to remove the lower housing!

Full size router is obviously gonna be way better. But as long as you're doing smaller projects you should be fine. And for the router bits it takes 1/4 inch shank.

Must be bought at the Home Depot for the lifetime warranty to take effect. If you don't buy it at the Home Depot is only 3 years, and that sucks.

Great review Jeff. How long does the battery usually last on average for daily use, I know there's a lot of variables but generally speaking. I've always relied on corded power tools when it comes to any type of saws and routers. My preferred brand is DeWalt. Also would be nicer to see this router come in a hard sided case instead of the soft shell, IMO. BTW...am I FIRST? Lol!

+snakemonkey555 you're on a roll with the comments!! I need to do more testing to see how the battery holds up. I'd suggest getting the 2-pack so one is always charge and ready to go. I'd also like to see a hard case, these tools get thrown around in trucks and trunks. Some tools don't come with anything though...what's up with that!

You're both right about these tools needing a hard case. I LOVE those Ridgid bags, they are tough and look really great. Fine for such threats as dirt and abrasions, perhaps, but the fact is, they don't provide enough protection from impacts and crushing. I always wind up fitting out a toolbox with a customized cutout to "hug" my tools, for this very reason. Better shock protection, inside a hard shell. I used to have a 14.4V Ridgid drill/driver that came in an excellent blow-molded, hard-sided briefcase style case. That was truly a great case! Recently I moved up to the 18V Gen5X brushless drill/driver (which is phenomenal, I might add). I just didn't want to part with that old case, but the new drill's motor casing was a little fatter. So I wound up using a heat-gun to soften the plastic, reshaping it and making a bit more space. Worked great! Superior protection for my new toy! Ridgid should really think about marketing custom-fit plastic hard cases for ALL their tools. I'm sure they would sell many, and make a pile of money. Talk about a low-risk endeavor, heck, they could even farm that out to a third-party blowmolding manufacturer.

Oh, in my rant about hard cases, I almost forgot to mention... I own a R86044B myself, and it is a joy to use! Snakemonkey555, to answer your question, routing can be demanding, so this tool can go through battery capacity pretty quickly. The fact that the R86044B is brushless helps, as that really improves run-time, but of course it's not a magic bullet. Naturally, the more material you're removing, the faster it'll run 'em down. Routing dadoes will, of course, drain ya faster than doing some simple edge trims. It's best for that reason to use 4.0Ah and 5.0Ah packs with this tool. The good news is, if all you have on hand is a smaller pack, tool power will not suffer. The electronics in a brushless tool compensate for this, and performance doesn't degrade just because you used a smaller pack. It will only reduce your run-time accordingly. Sorry I can't give you any hard data on the amount of run-time, but here's an example: I can drive screws with my brushless R86009 drill/driver all day with one of those 1.5Ah packs, but after 30 minutes of routing with my R86044B, that same pack is gonna be ready for a recharge.

How long does the battery last?

It's a good tool but why did u use the edge guide when u have a bit that doesn't need one ?

What I would like to see is a brushless sander 5 or 6 inch electric. I know there are a couple but those ones are horribly expensive. The brands I have seen are Festool and Mirka. If you are prone to heart attacks don't look at the prices. They are significantly out of the price ranges of most stores. Of course I already knew that Festool is a _very expensive_ brand. Their cheapest tool looks to be a 5 inch random orbit sander costing somewhere around $175 or a little more. I had one and I have no complaints about it at all. Festool tools also work with their dust collector vacuum (or a shop vac with the right size hose if you don't have the vacuum). The vacuum they sell starts automatically with the tools that are plugged into it. Once you have had Festool you will never want the cheaper tools again.

+John Doe I've only heard about Festool being a great company. That is pretty pricey for a sander but if you're using it all the time and it works with their shop vac then the price is worth it. What's their warranty like? Fein has a similar vac system that only turns on when the tool is in use. I've paired it with the Fein MultiMaster and love that capability. Again, it's not cheap but woodworker or metal shops would like it

I don't remember what the warranty is. We did at one time fabricate solid surface counter tops and the dust from that stuff is like baby powder without the horrible perfume. It gets into tool bearings and ruins them. Festool is supposed to use double sealed bearings or double bearings and that is why we used their tools. They are among the top of the line. I know about the Muiltimasterm, those are also very expensive.

Great video, the two 5 ah batteries you purchased separate, do they have the Lifetime warranty?? I'm struggling trying to purchase batteries with Lifetime Warranties. I have all the 18v Rigid tools .

Steve Kopcial the only way I know how to get the lifetime service agreement on batteries is to buy them in a kit with other tools. For example, the two batteries that came with my drill/driver combo kit are covered, but the 2 pack of batteries that I bought separate are only covered for 3 years.

The batteries that come with the power tools are 1 or 2 amp batteries, I m now interested in the higher capacity batteries such as the 3 or 4 amp version and these dont come with any kits. I did find out Interstate Battery rebuilds the higher capacity battery for $25 each, I probably will go that route when the time comes.

@@stevekopcial129 I know your comment is a year old but you can purchase batteries with a charger and that is considered a "kit" and can register the batteries and charger for the LSA. I have done this and it works great as I've had 3 batteries replaced under the LSA so far. I would check out the clearance section as they sometimes have batteries or wait for sales towards the holiday season!

Might be worth it and the batteries can get the LSA.

It looks almost like the latest Ryobi trim router. Funny that, being both made by TTI

It is the same almost. Ryobi isn't brushless. I use a dewalt battery in mine and it seems to get extra power.

Intending on getting it for small laminate stuff. Was cool to see you cut on some wood with it BUT treated was a poor choice. I mean who routes treated? Really. Poplar or maple would have been more appropriate.

Thanks for the explanation of the blatantly obvious features. Have you tried attaching the vacuum attachment that came with it? Still trying to figure out how and your video sure didn't help

Sadly, while indeed very nice, these routers are limited by Ridgid's choice to use a larger opening in the clear plastic sub-bases rather than the far more common P-C template bushing-style opening, providing other brands with a decisive edge.

CAUTION: R86044 will not accept a universal inlay kit, nor does Ridgid make one at this time. Major bummer.

Yes, you just need to get the dado bit and you should be set. This little tool has plenty of power and if you can go cordless I'd recommend it.

Speed selector goes to 7. Dewalt only 6. But Makita goes to 11

You mention the cost of the tool and the cost of the batteries.....but yet failed to also mention the fact that you have to purchase the charger as well. Quite an expensive little unit once you bought all that is required. I know all the tool companies are pretty much doing that these days and think that sucks. I'll keep the cord.

It's typically an add on after you've bought into the family of tools. Most folks already have plenty of batteries already. I bought the fathers day starter pack, got 2 batteries with that. Then I bought another drill and impact driver set, 2 more batteries and a second charger. Then the radio charger, then the Jobmax, then my wife bought me the angle grinder and another 2 pack of batteries with charger (3 chargers) for our anniversary ( she actually bought the batteries and charger pack on sale and got the tool for free... Win win). I then bought the jigsaw and then the router and palm sander combo. I believe I almost have enough batteries to power everything at the same time. It's not a big deal. That's why they sell that way. You don't really need a charger with everything you buy. You will never use them all. I have one charger in my site works job box, my home garage has one and I have a spare on my tool cabinet.

This is cool, and the price is great I just am not invested in rigid=)

Mine stopped working after about 4 uses. Pretty disappointed. I'm not going to invest another $120. I did love it when it did work however.

When metal things get hot they expand, even just slightly. Everyone knows you leave a small space to account for expansion of the bit metal. Never met anyone who didn't know this.

ClashWithAJ the amount of expansion you get from the warm up of a router bit wouldn’t be measurable by the naked eye. If you think the router bit is moving that much how are you controlling the amount of material you are removing throughout its heat cycle? What is your background in metallurgy?
