Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast with Louis Theroux #69

Pathetic.
Richard is very excited to meet the man who made him give up viewing porn (temporarily), Groove is in the Heart dancer and park ranger Louis Theroux. With a bad choice of words Richard almost Merchants the podcast early on and the interviewer becomes the interviewee as Herring gets Therouxed and opens up about his pre-marital life.
Will he be the subject of one of Louis’ future documentaries? Can there be a more insulting thing to happen to a person given the broken people he generally focuses on. Louis’ interview with Jimmy Savile is analysed in depth. Should he have spotted the monster lurking beneath the surface? Plus revelations about fagging for Nick Clegg, the bullying of Max Clifford and having your bits ripped off by a chimp. It’s a fascinating 90 minute chat, more serious than usual, but still very funny.

weird week'friends': Louis Theroux reprises his role as the zany journalist sniffing out some of the weird and wacky lifestyles of the US, UK, and Europe. Louis is joined by a special guest each week and the guest gets to decide where they go and what they do. Like travel man but with people instead of places.

Louis has a great sense of humour! At times when I watch his documentaries when he comes across as seemingly naive and innocent, I can never quite tell if the seemingly genius comedy timing is intentional and the naivety is an act or if it's genuine. Duh. He obviously really knew what he was doing.

I think, like he said, he just naturally doesn't like being too confrontational, and he works around that by being as non-threatening as possible to get his subjects to open up and reveal things about themselves. If people feel they're under attack they might close themselves off and get defensive. I think once he gains a certain amount of trust he is more comfortable asking serious questions. I agree he has a great sense of humor, though :)

Louis has been thinking about doing a doc on stand up comedians (Creating, refining and performing new bits) for a while. Yeah, not funny at all. At the beginning of that segment, Louis visibly shows discomfort at his Richard's play on his series title but carries on. I mean Louis has spent time with the victims of these predators and probably doesn't feel comfortable making light of any of it. Then Louis says he feels responsible in some way. He then opens up quite deeply about how he's been grappling with not being able to detect the predatory behaviour in Savile and help the survivors of the abuse. Richard's response to all of that is to make a flippant "joke" blaming Louis. Richard showed himself to be a tactless interviewer who lacking empathy.

I reckon a lot of the new comedians were fans as kids. I totally agree he should be held in much higher regard.
