Richard Beymer sings only the word "Maria" - West Side Story

Фильм және анимация

This is kinda weird - I think perhaps it was a test for vocal match.
For anyone who ever wondered if Richard Beymer recorded any of his own vocals for West Side Story, here he is singing only the words "Maria" in the verse to this song. Of course, none of his singing voice was used.
Jim Bryant sings the other lines and jumps in completely once the chorus begins.

A little flat, but not too awful. By the way, where do you get these vocal tracks, all of the West Side Story ones?

@jett woodward Russ' recording is fine. If they had used Natalie's recordings, the film - and her - would have been laughingstocks.

@jett woodward If you think Natalie sings pretty well, there's no use continuing this debate. She's off-pitch and swooping to get the leaps. Everyone during filming was laughing behind her back (cast and crew have confirmed that) while they listened to her playbacks during filming over and over. She sang to her own tracks only because her contract required it. Everyone knew her voice would be replaced, as it was in almost every film she made. Marni did not dub any of Rita in "A Boy Like That". She dubbed a section of the "Quintet" since Rita was ill. The key of "A Boy Like That" could not be raised because you would then also have to raise the key of "I Have A Love". No one can sing that high.

jett woodward This is so tedious. Here’s the actual quote from Marni’s autobiography: “When I was re-recording Maria’s high-soaring section of the Quntet, Saul Chaplin turned to me once again. “Both Betty Wand and Rita Moreno are sick with colds today. Why don’t you just sing Anita’s part in this too, Marni.” So when Anita is singing about “getting her kicks tonight“ that’s me. And when all the countermelodies of the quintet come together and everyone is singing in glorious Harmony, since I am singing both Maria and Anita, I’m actually singing a duet with myself. Only in the movies!” There’s nothing about dubbing Rita in I Have a Love, since Betty Wand did that.

He was flat because he only sang one word in movie..." Maria" ... his songs were sung by another and dubbed. Same with Natalie Wood. She didnt sing....her songs were dubbed in also.

Richard Beymer wasn't a singer. He never claimed to be.

I thought he was PERFECT for the part. Ridiculous that Natalie Wood was unfriendly and unsociable to him throughout the movie. What a spoiled brat. I've also seen him in other parts and he did great in every role he played.

No, Natalie was a nice person, she was just upset that warren Beatty didn’t costar I think. She wasn’t a spoiled brat, she was a very nice beautiful woman

Heard that just before she passed away, she came up to him and was friendlier and they made up. Can't remember where I read the source from, but it was an account from Richard Beymer
