I Feel Pretty - Natalie Wood 's own voice - Jet Song - Russ Tamblyn 's own voice - West Side Story

Фильм және анимация

Here are partial tracks for Natalie and Russ, which were used during filming. Natalie sang to this track while filming, but I only had a piano/vocal track. I stripped out Marni Nixon (who later replaced Natalie's voice entirely in the film) and added the orchestra. Why they dubbed Russ Tamblyn, I don't know -- I think he sounds great!
From Marni Nixon:
"The sessions were set up so that Natalie would first record a song on her own and then I would get up and record the whole song again...they explained my presence by saying that they would be able to mix my high notes into her takes, which I knew at the time was...technically impossible.
It was very disheartening to hear them as they listened to her playbacks and extolled her vocal prowess. 'Oh Natalie, that was just wonderful,' they cooed. They were creating a monster. A monster who thought everything she sang was perfect.
I am sure, however, that they thought if they were critical of her vocals in any way that she would walk off the picture before everything was filmed. She had them hostage and they were placating her until they didn't need her anymore.
I heard later that Natalie was very upset and felt betrayed by the powers that be. She sincerely wanted to sing her own tracks. I have to agree that it was cruel of Saul Chaplin and his musical crew to lead her on and make her believe there was a chance they would use her voice. But in their defense it was their job to make sure that their highly paid and very bankable star finished shooting every scene. In addition, it was their responsibility to present the brilliant and difficult Bernstein/Sondheim score in the best possible light. This they did, and did it well."

I am glad in this age we got to hear Natalie Wood’s singing . She has a very lovely Soprano voice . However , the Suits were right to dub it with Marni Nixon . I once asked this Actress who I got to be friends with where I worked if she could sing and dance . She had just graduated with a degree in Drama . She said ,” Yes but not as good as somebody who was trained and been it all their life .” Like that Sound of Music production NBC did with Carrie Underwood and Steven Moyer a few years ago , one could definitely see the difference between their skill level and the people cast in it who did it for a living

Russ is so talented wow I'm so confused as to why they dubbed him omg his voice. Pitch and song all shows strength in the character and singing the jet shows more of his authority as the gang leader and he has a stronger deeper voice. Which would have added more character in the musical.

@@kennethwayne6857 Actually, no, even when she sings a little bit of 'somewhere' to a dying Tony, it is Marni Nixon there too. In fact, well, according to Marni, when Natalie had to scream out "don't you touch him!" they couldn't get a good take and Marni claims (in her book) that that's her screaming the line. As far as Natalie singing "I feel Pretty" I think she is fine on the lower, quick note portions of the song and (in my opinion) it could have worked with Marni just jumping in on the higher notes. Instead, they did what they call a "vocal blanket" meaning that Marni went in after all the scenes were filmed and literally re-did all the vocals for Natalie.

In 1966, Sonny Fox co-hosted a daily talk/variety show for adults titled The New Yorkers on WNEW-TV, with co-hosts Penelope Wilson and Gloria Okon, plus newsman Stewart Klein in 1967. I don't know if it was Penelope Wilson or Gloria Okon, but one of them interviewed MARNI NIXON and Marni said that (at least, early-on) that Natalie did the lower note portions of I FEEL PRETTY and Marni explained how she jumped in on the bridge to do the higher note sections. It's too bad that none of these shows exist, but Marni at the time gave the overall impression that Natalie at least did some of the singing although in the end Marni sang every note.

Listen.... I'm a t soprano with over a decade of lessons and training and I struggle with this material sometimes. It's a beast. There are some parts in I Feel Pretty she does well. However those high notes are in all honestly not great or healthy. Maybe she needed more time with lessons and that would have helped and they DEFINITELY shouldn't have lead her to believe they would be able to use her own singing. But I can understand why they dubbed her and there is absolutely no shame in it. The woman was obviously extremely talented and a wonderful actress, and if the material was easier and she wasn't trying to sing a soprano part she could have easily sung in a movie.

@Music is Life They could blend their voices together in those days, they did for The King and I which was before West Side Story. They blended Marni and Deborah's voice in The King and I. It was absolutely amazing how they did that and they sound so similar and darling Deborah helped Marni so much and made her job easier and they were also good friends. In Getting To Know You, Deborah sings the beginning and then it transitions to Marni's voice. They did it very well and it's my favourite musical that Marni does the singing in. I love Deborah and Marni so much. You are both missed ❤️💕

But it was her fault. If she had accepted that she had to be dubbed, as Deborah Kerr did in "The King and I", she could have worked with Marni Nixon to create a seamless blend. But by insisting on singing it herself, and even filming to her own voice, she forced the creative team to placate her. They knew that if they told her she would be dubbed, it would have led to a very unpleasant filming experience.

You are completely wrong. Russ was dubbed in the final film - he says so himself on the DVD. "Tonight" sounds nothing like the final film. Listen again. Natalie being dubbed is one of the most famous and well-known Hollywood stories - she was furious.

Neither Natalie nor Russ had bad voices. They just weren’t the ideal “pretty” and perfect... which is actually a GOOD thing. West Side Story was a stage musical first. Musical theater is almost never pretty and perfect. The rawness of their voices conjures up a sense of that nostalgia. It’s sincere and unpretentious. The dubs are good too, but I really think they should have just kept the original actors’ voices.

Unpopular opinion, but I prefer Natalies voice. I personally don't like Marnie's voice, but more importantly Natalie's voice sounds like it is coming from her. Marine's doesn't to me. On tonight, if they spent more time with Natalie they could have gotten a better performance I am sure.

That's so offensive to Natalie. She was a complete professional who of course spent months trying to sing this role - to accuse her of doing less is an insult. This was as good as she could do, evidenced by the fact that she also tried to sing for many years in later films, and never got to a level that would have allowed her to sing this. Some people just can't sing. Marni was an extremely close match.

I have seen the 1962 cimematic production dozens of times and i have become accustomed to the professional singing overdubbed in the soundtrack in the released film. However, as I listened to Natalie's original singing, I was pleasantly surprised that she attempted it on her own in the film. Her vocals are not bad, however there is much more energy, fervor, emotion and strength in Marni Nixon's Rendition. If Natalie's vocals were used in the film the scenes with Natalies signing would simply not have been effective and would have drastically affected the enire production. Natalies' vocal is simply lacking the emotion. Besides, Marni Nixon was a trained vocalist and was in great demand in films of this calibre at the time. I didnt like that the fact that the producers duped Natalie by telling her how great she sounded, then brought in Ms. Nixon. But that is Hollywood for you. I have to admit, the final production with all the dubbed vocals made for fine movie making... the producers were absolutely correct. 10 Academy awards worth! Thanks for posting this, I was always interested in how Natalie sounded with her attempt.

@@lostvocals8 ...and actually, for many years, Natalie took singing lessons (prior to West Side Story) - she wanted to sing and tried her best - unfortunately her Vocal efforts weren't strong enough to get her through. I'm surprised though, that a Record company never approached Natalie to sing for them - if any offer was ever made, I've never read about it. She made a Test demo record of the song "Little Girl blue" and she did sing in "Penelope" (not one of her better flicks but ok) and of course she sang in GYPSY and she sang in a TV Movie several years later - she had a 'somewhat passable' voice but of course when your talking about a musical of the magnitude of WSS they can't settle for 'somewhat passable'....
