I saw an ad in our local paper for a ribbon skirt class. I was curious and started snooping around the internet. That’s how I ended up watching your tutorial. I have acquired enough sewing skills over the years that I think I could make a skirt by following along with your lesson. Thank you for sharing!!

A lot of times on dark colored material I use the edge of a soap bar to mark my material, i keep my used soap for this purpose. it washes right off or wipes off.

I just made my first ribbon skirt today!! It was so much fun , we glued the ribbons first then sewed them and we pinned the end of the ribbons in place to make sure we didn’t sew the tip of the ribbons by accident . It was very helpful hopefully it helps some of you too !! :)

Leona Whitehat, thank you so much for this tutorial. I just made me and my daughter skirts for INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY March we will have in the City we live in on Monday.

I had two skirts to make for a 28 inch waist. which gave me a 42 inch waist. But they had 39 inch hips. I had to add ten inches so they could walk in it. So I cut my fabric 49" and adjusted it for the waist and hips. So glad I had the same hip measurement or I'd of been in a lot of trouble.

Hi beautiful ribbon skirts! I was wonder what brand your ruler grid is? I would like to buy one.

if i don't want the ribbons on the end / sticking out the side seams can i sew the ribbon onto the fabric right until the end? (without leaving that 1/2 inch gab from the end of the fabric). I want my ribbons to go right around the skirt (no side fringe of ribbon)

Stevie, I never do the sticky out side ribbons, as I am wide enough without the emphasis. I sew the side seams together, hem, then measure ribbon placement from the bottom. I cut the ribbons on a diagonal then at each end. Where the ribbon ends meet, I fold the end under and finish sewing. I only sew each ribbon at the top, leaving the bottom open. Less rippling. .

I don't know if you will see this question! Do you have a version that has a drawstring waist instead of elastic? I'm in the midst of preparing to make a ribbon skirt and wanted to make it so that it fits more than one size (in case I decide to gift it). Love your tutorial!

Those tulips at the end, are those precut or did you make them?

Somehow I made the skirt too small even using the calculations here:(. Was I supposed to add for a seam allowance on top of those measurements?

Where on the legs should the hem of the ribbon skirt hit?

aliexpress.com has lots of ribbon in different widths. You want Satin however Organza ribbon could be beautiful on a skirt also and you can layer with other colors and ribbons. I am a NON- NATIVE I just love ribbon.

How do you know what length to make it?

This is great! I always struggled with getting measurements right.

How long do you cut the elastic? If your waist is 30" and the material is 40" all the way around, then is the elastic just the same as your waist, 30"?

I usually cut mine just a couple inches less than my waist measurement.

Just a bit nervous to start to cut🥴. If the persons measurement is Waist 34” and hips are 40” do I use 34” or 40” for the waist measurement? Eg 34+17” or 40+20”. Just concerned if I use 34+17” it may not fit the Hips🤔🤔🤔

I noticed when you sew the ribbons on, you dont back stitch. Im sure it looks nice and clean this way but I am worried about it coming unsewn. This is my first try at sewing a ribbon squirt.

I would say, then simply do your back stich.

Katrina Werchouski just sew all the way to the edge with no extra ribbon. n when u match the sides up to finish, they will be one circle w no extra.

Sew seam with ribbon end sandwiched between fabric.

When you say 3 inches on each side for room to walk, do you mean to add 3 inches to the calculations? Or just cut the first calculated waist measurements out, then cut the sides from there? My daughter is measured at 27 for the waist after I did the math on your tutorial. We measured her a at 36 inches on her waist with a tape measure initially. I am afraid to cut in case I make a mistake on it.

In the video when it shows the fabric being cut it measures out at approx 24 inches before it's folded. When it's folded it measures 12 inches. What would the waist measurements be for this? Sorry, I'm confused by the measurements and what to initially cut.

Add 3 more inches to the calculations. I try to go bigger and cut down later if needed.

Tutuli Sewa I made one like that not too long ago and it was super easy! It took a while to align the ribbon and measure everything, but sewing was so fast. I used a zigzag stitch and sewed two at a time. Thanks for the tip - Post pics of your skirts and any other tips that’ll help all of us as we sew :)

Laura Riggs, While we appreciate the thought, this is something called regalia and it's reserved for those of Native heritage only. If you really would like to show off your pride in Natives buy something like moccasins or smaller jewelry. Those are not normally considered as taboo. Hope this helps.

It depends on the size of the skirt. Two yards is enough for a skirt up to size XL. If you want a fuller skirt, you can try using 2.5-3 yards. I usually go with more yards and have now started adding pockets.

You want Satin it is a polyester. Look at aliexpress.com
