It is so badass to see this in real life after making it to the master class of pikes peak in dirt rally and having the track completely memorized from driving up this hill over and over again for days on end... Its funny that I did that before I cared or really knew anything about racing, or that any of this shit was actually real. But after doing this I gotta say I really like racing and I've gained a new respect for how cool all of this really is.

the gravel was great for racing but hell on the ecosystem, most of the depressions near the top are buried under everything that got eroded off of the road every year.

I need to make it out to this event, it looks very exciting!

Being able to do that time in a car this wild is spectacular! I mean 3rd in a straight line didn't seem to take full throttle, I can't imagine what Rhys'd be able to achieve with a better car

Anyone know what happened with the sequential when it seemed to pop back out of 2nd gear after one of the hairpins @5:41, after that in slow hairpins Rhys started clutching 1-3 gears. Damaged box? Either way amazing drive and incredible seeing him managing traction towards the top where clearly its down to nothing in the cold.

Clutch on 1st gear only. I've seen most rally drivers do this. I'm guessing to gain more traction, less load and stress on the transmission.

Moving to Colorado Springs, hope to be up there running like that in a few years! Great vid! Got hairy towards end hah must be crazy throttle response at high alt:)

Noticed same thing. At first car seems to be planted on the road but as altitude climbs it starts to lose grip. Must be combination of decreasing downforce and lower road temperature.

I'm so confused. Does this car have a clutch?? I didnt see his leg move at all

sequencial, i used to shift like that on my gokart, clutch was only used to keep the engine going if spin or stop.

It does have a clutch if you spin or stop or need to start moving again, but you dont need to use it as it is a sequential and the car automatically revmatches on downshift and blips on upshift.

@@LincolnX14 Correct. Sequential gearboxes do not need clutch to be used. Although for downshifts you need to blip and for upshifts you need to let off the throttle, but most racecars have an autoblip for downshift and auto power cut for upshift (so you dont need to get off the gas even for a split second while upshifting)

They should mark each corner with different colored barriers for level of tightness. Red for hairpins and purple for almost nothing. Then you have 5 colors for the in between corners. It would be hard to memorize 156 turns with your adrenaline so high thats why i think drivers start out really strong and then start to early shift and play it safe.

They know every corner. The exact route they are going to take. They don't look at corners. All they check for are brake markers.

My best guess is that the tires were getting used up and the ambient temp is like 20 degrees at the top so the road is very cold

Makes my butt pucker up seeing them get so close to the steep drop offs. I like to watch but would not do it for any amount of money. But the real crazies are the motorcyclists on the Isle of Man. I think in its history there is an average of more than one death per year.
