Just watched the two runs side by side...by the time Rhys reaches the 4th corner, Sebastian is already in another zip code. I think everyone should see them side by side. Of course, if I'm not mistaken, Rhys' car was only 2 wheel drive.

For your information: this Hyundai Genesis Coupè has 900hp and 1080NM of torque, the one Loeb is driving in the other video is a Peugeot 308 T16 and it has 875hp and 883NM of torque. Rhys Millen was 49 seconds behind Sebastien Loeb, 9:02 vs 8:13. Average speed 79 vs 87.

I believe they had problems with the car during shake down. Also pretty sure that the car originally had paddle shifters instead of a standard shift lever. That itself does make a world of difference since Rhys was actually having to remove a hand from the steering wheel during upshifts and downshifts.

(shorter gear ratios + stick shifter) * the all the times he shifts = makes part of the difference. You also have to add the driving style or cornering line he chooses against Loeb's. But mainly the first part, shorter gear ratios seems to make a huge diff.

I agree, especially with regards to the shifter. Not sure why Millen decided to go with the hand shifter instead of paddles. Hand shifters are fine if you use the handbrake a lot (like in dirt rally stages) because you're constantly reaching around that area where both are located. But when you don't use the handbrake at all (like here), why make yourself work harder in shifting and take one of your hands off the wheel in the process?

Not my words - those are Millen's words (well, he referred to the 208 T16 as an "F1 car", anyway). True, the Peugeot team was already a sunken cost that was simply transferred from LeMans to this hill climb. So while Peugeot technically didn't put in much additional cost here, their existing investment already greatly exceeded what Millen could afford for this race.

Makes sense, especially considering his comments regarding how Loeb and Peugeot were running an F1-style operation compared to his own privately-funded RMR operation. He showed respect to Loeb's ability, but also showed some annoyance at Peugeot throwing money at this hill climb. Part of his annoyance may have stemmed from his own car not working as well as he would have liked. That said, despite his car troubles, he still managed a very impressive time, but Loeb was just that much better.

I don't think Rhys Millen is slow. He has good trajectories except that he fears I believe to leave his vehicle of the road. He brakes before Loeb in every corner. This is not the case with Loeb who does so at the last moment. This causes Rhys Millen to lose hundredths on every turn and there are a lot of them on this route.

I wonder, why is Loeb so much faster. In comparsion side by side, it seems that Loebs car has better acceleration, faster shifting, and its a lot more precise. And finally, Loeb is just better and more precise himself. At least it looks like it side by side. I would want to see Loeb in Millen's car or Millen in Loeb's. This will tell a lot more. Here I think that Loebs car is much better.

Their is always danger in Motorsport but just tarmacing the road is not the answer because tarmac = more grip which means higher speeds and larger crashed. But increasing the safety of cars reduces the deaths from Motorsport which is one reason why rally cars are built so tough so we do not return to the death of the Group B era.
