Rhino fighting lions! - Etosha Radeldraf waterhole
One week into our 3 week self drive Safari in Namibia we were lucky enough to see & catch on this on video. We were in an open safari truck at the time on an afternoon Game drive in Western Etosha. We arrived at the waterhole about 16:00 where 9 lions had been stalking some zebra. At sundown this Black Rino showed up.

Not even 9 lions can take down this black rhino. Speed, size, thick skin, and overall aggressiveness make him immune. Just look how quickly he's able to turn that 1 ton body of his....remarkable to watch! Eventually the lions will lose interest, and the rhino will be on his way.
Rhinos are f-ing tanks..with a spikey horn on top to gore you with. I think the guy below me makes a good point about their turning speed being the game changer.
It's more like LIONESSES harassing a Rhino. They know they can't bring the rhino down because of it's size and weight. It's funny to watch. Thanks for the upload
Our guide told us that the lions didn't have a chance, due to the strength an speed of the rhino. For the people complaining about the laughter: this isn't laughter out of amusement, this is laughter out of amazement, excitement and adrenalin. Also it is rude to tell strangers next to you to shut up.
Rhino pretty much said to the lions, 'This is my waterhole now, get the fuck out of here!' lol!
Incredible sighting. Thanks for sharing
These are young lions- Adult Lions don't attack healthy Rhino as they have no chance of bring them down and the likely hood of death for them is very real. Brilliant vid well done
The only way that lions can feast upon this Rhino is when it dies from old age XD
No other animal on the African continent can weigh over a ton and have the speed and quick turning ability of a black rhino. An attack at night by the lions would of made no difference. The ONLY threat to a rhino is man with his gun or a rare rogue elephant bull. It's sad these seemingly invincible magnificent creatures are critically endangered of extinction.
Even 15 lions wouldn't stand a chance.
"Some packs of lions are known to even down elephants." "If A beats B and B beats C, then A can beat C!" logic doesn't work in real life. Even though your average elephant is more powerful than your average rhino, an elephant is actually an EASIER target for a lion pride because of it's ginormous size and lumbering speed. By contrast, the rhino is built lower to the ground and is far faster/more agile than an elephant. There's a reason we've never seen an adult rhino ever fall to a lion.
I think the Rhino's telling the Lions "Come back with 50 of your friends and let's make this semi-fair...cause you guys are boring me."
No way. It is to fast and powerful. And with its horn it would slaughter 4 of them before they do any kind of damage. Especially with that thick armor.
All this rhino wanted was a drink of water and no group of adolescent lions was gonna stand in its way ;)
The rhino is a champ! >:D
You conveniently left out the "lumbering speed" part. An elephant simply doesn't have the turning speed, quickness, and agility that a rhino does. It's just a big, huge target for 30 lions to take down. That (and the possibly tougher hide?) make a rhino a much tougher target for a lion pride than any elephant, buffalo, or even Hippo. You even said it yourself - lions have taken down full grown elephants. So why haven't we ever seen them take down a rhino? Could you elaborate on that?
iv always loved rhinos as a kid huge animals!
nah lol never seen that bro. I'll have to look that up! :)
the rhino is defending his pool :)
LOL @ 5:23. Poor rhino, he just wandered over for a drink. The lions can tell/smell that he's edible, but don't know what to make of his armor and size. One tried to cling on and bite him at 0:32, but one does not simply casually take a bite out of a rhino.
Very good point
no youve seen an occasional baby or juvenile elephant get taken down by lions, a full grown bull elephant would stomp out an entire pride
thanks for that video, that was amazing !!!
An elephant is pretty quick as well. And the enormous size makes it an easier target for lions? Please, elaborate.
Guys, women must communicate their feelings. Just a fact of life. Most often they are the ones that get the good videos. Wile we are chilling looking at what is going on.
I am not close to an animal expert but our tour guide told us while we were watching that the rhino we be the winner of this battle.. I don't want to say anyone here is wrong in their opinion I think a lot of thins can happen in nature
i dunno i've seen lions hunt elephant and hippos, guess the rhino is more mobile, more effective weaponry and a very thick hide.
Hi thank you for sharing this great video. I just had a question. Were these nomadic lions or part of a pack?
After viewing this video... One does not simply fuck with a Rhino.
The lion on 1:54 had it planned all along to go from the back but when he did he froze he propably thought ''The fuck am i doing''
too powerfull for the little cat
If I'm still alive in 40 years and you (or anyone else) can produce a video, I'll be the first to shake your hand and admit you proved me wrong. Until then, I stand by my assertion that a healthy adult rhino has never fallen prey to a pride of lions.
As always, I appreciate when anybody shares, posts. Thank you. And not having been on African Safari myself, please forgive the following slight criticism--try and stay quiet, mostly, and let the tableau unfold. Banal "Wows", and "This is astonishing!", or similar, are just instances of humans (mostly the women folk here, but still) needing to talk or insert themselves into something much bigger, more dramatic, NATURAL, the entire reason PRESUMABLY you went and spent 10 thousand dollars or what have you to bear witness to. To further make the point, these tourists became sheep like and allowed their guide to start up and see if there were some damn zebras elsewhere, leaving this LION AND RHINO fight to itself. Yeah, maybe the lions were waiting him or her out, til dark...but at least stop with the freaking jokes. Women cannot even leave something like THIS alone, gotta talk it to death.

As many have left very rude comments regarding this topic I have decided to reply to the least rude one. I assume none of you has ever experienced such a natural spectacle or you would know the adrenalin rush, fascination and excitement of the moment. You try not expressing that explosion of experience. We were quiet enough to not disturb the animals, it might seem louder on tape but you can even hear our guide talking to us so it's NOT a big deal. Additionally we were in that Safari truck with a drunk australian couple (who were very nice btw, so no judgement passed) who, of course, were even more excited. To the comments regarding our ignornace of not staying longer: the lodges you stay at in africa have a curfew due to security reasons. We had been passed this time already and our guide was making a huge exception letting us watch even those couple minutes.

sydneylondonparis Least rude is a dubious honor. Allow ME to further qualify, with my apologies. I really DO appreciate your sharing, as I have never been. I likely was viewing African and the like scenes, looking for a quiet, NATURAL escape from the busy world, and may have hit a number of them that got a bit chatty, and chose (my bad) to weigh in on what I would do (who knows, ONCE THERE) regarding letting the scene unfold, etc. I do feel poorly that my comment and those of others fell into the too typical on social media area of criticism. PLEASE, accept my humble apologies. And again, THANK YOU! Don't let any comments by myself or anyone else cast your experience there, or kind sharing here, in ANY bad light, PERIOD! CHEERS!

Nun Ya i farted
I am a bit confused, not sure if they where fight for food or for water.
What went down after you left apple? who won in the end? thanks.
Lol...I love lions!!!...
What was that animal crawling by threw the rocks at 1:23?
lion is the most brave animal
So who won Rhino or Lions ?
This video is pure evidence that lions are NOT kings of the jungle. A whole pack of lions couldn't even take down one rhino. Furthermore, they were afraid of it. Rhinos are the real kings of the jungle, at least as far are fighting goes.

+Xyce Bedet Lol Hunting rhinos has nothing to do with being a King. Pretty much no predator on earth can hunt down a healthy adult rhino. They maybe can hunt down young or old unhealthy ones
lions are scared they run in fear because of only 1 rhino lol
You mean the lions did not have a chance. The Rhino's main problem is that it would have to be chasing lions all around and eventually get very tired. If the rhino latched on to one good it's goodbye lion.
i never seen lions take down a rhino i've seen a lions take down elephants, hippos..etc. but not a rhino.
I thought rhinos are protected? People don't intervene when something like this is happening to endangered and or protected species? Just curious. Thank you
so what happened?
This was a great video. Although a few points must be deducted for the juvenile antimale statement "is that male just doing nothing and watching?" He happens to be the one who keeps the pride safe from hyenas. Besides, the younger male is the most active in this video....
i am comment number 10!!!
Didn't realize rhinos could be so agile for their weight and size.
what where they thinking? silly cats.
No, it's a sound of thought. I use my head to think.
is that rhino white female ?
I was hoping to see the Rhino turn one of those lions into a sail cat!
HURRAY FOR LIONS!!!
Think about how long video cameras have been around and how long wildlife has been studied. Back to the 1950s? 1930s? Not one time in countless decades has there been video recorded PROOF of a non-diseased, non-poached (already shot) adult rhino falling to a lion(s). I suppose anything is possible...maybe if there were 100 lions (LOL)...I just find it very hard to believe. Of course, I never thought it was possible that an adult elephant could fall prey - but my point is they're easier prey
leon vs rinocernote
If this is a jungle, you must be chuck norris...
there is a video if youtube where about 15 lions took almost an hour to take down a young elephant .. the skin of the elephant is ridiculously tough and large ..
when the rhino slip and fell in the water... i wonder if those lions were laughing???
1:19 WTF is that moving on the ground from right to left? Seem like its perfectly camouflaged
These are young, suicidal and inexperienced lions. Adult lions are wise enough to avoid rhinos at all costs.
Weeeell, so do I:)
Do not and can not are two different things:)
'easily bring the rhino down' lmao!!! never gonna happen. lions wouldn't risk it. as i have expressed soooooo many times, the TURNING SPEED of the rhino is the game changer. elephants, buffalo, and hippos don't have that. add to that the rhino can run 35mph and move that enormous weight effortlessly. the pauses give the rhino always enough energy to keep it on the defense or offense. there is NO footage of a rhino bringing brought down by lions, but so many similar to this footage.
I could've watched this stand off for another half hour. Wasn't there enough instant bloodfest for these tourists ?....SPECTACULAAAAIIRE.....
wtf? you simply couldn't hold the camera still, could you ??????
Of course! Because in the moment you are concerned about how KZreadrs will view the video..
rhino is the tank of the jungle. Lions have no chance with rhino.
And using the excuse of "no rhinos in existence" is a bad argument. Rhinos are endangered but they're still enough that there's been *plenty* of rhino/lion encounters through the centuries. We're not talking about a dinosaur here. Rhinos are still with us. And in every rhino/lion encounter YOU and I have ever seen, the lion has never even come close to harming (let alone killing) a rhino. I'm still waiting for you to show me the video where it's happened. :)
This is like me vs spider.. i fuck them up !
Filmed with the new Potato 2000 HD
rhino always win
why did you guys drive off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
..rhino always wins
rhino is not included in lions food list .
male lions do not hunt when female lions are hunting, they wait on the females to make the kill, then take what they want, and yes lions can and do eat rhino's, most of the time it is very young or very old rhino's
You'll probably avoid this question but, have you ever seen a pride of lions kill a healthy adult rhino, John? No dodging the question. Yes or no. And if you have, could you produce the footage or point to the URL? If you can't answer yes to either one, I'm afraid you've pretty much ended the debate.
man i wanna see a lion that goot rammed with a horn of a rhino ....
Interesting - sad you couldn't be bothered to wait longer to see what happened. Zebras are common but rhino are so rare with < 1500 of this subspecies in the world. You can see this rhino had previously lost its tail to predators.
This rhyno although smaller then some rhynos is far too strong for a pack of lions like this. Even the male lion is sitting on the side saying you must be crazy. A full fit ordinary Rhyno against a pride of lions Rhyno wins and very easily aswell. Only 2 animals Lions don't mess with are Rhynos and elephants and rightly so.
Why can't it be 3 rhinos vs 1lion and see how he likes it
small rhino
african variety rhino cannot be killed by a tiger, too much brute strength, thick hide, yea an elephant can skewer a rhino but theres an obvious size difference.
Tudo bem, a minha me irritando demais.
John your livin a fantasy world. Fact is Lions only play around with Rhino's never trying to take one out. Why? Because their hind end is way too TOUGH to grab hold of and the Rhino is so powerful its kick injures the Lion that attempts to thus they don't try it seriously ever. The same with the front of the Rhino, no place to choke it without a DEADLY THRASH the lion cant escape from at such close range. John, you stay away from Rhino's.
Amazing!....but these were adolescent lions tho... Lions have been documented killing adult black rhino.
lions cannot kill a full grown rhino.
Even a dozen of them wouldnt be able to do it easily...
48 inch...
young black rhino 1 : five adult lions 0
Thats a man made watering hole
exactly they only kill weak/old/baby/sick rhinos because the strong ones are too hard and they could die form those mature ones. coward lions....
Only in packs never on 1v1.
A
lions take down any animals but rhino is an exemption. tiger rarely take down asian rhino in india, but i think smaller comparing african rhino.
It could have been pitch black and 100 lions there, still not happening. The only way lions can kill the rhino is by bringing it down. The rhino is way too strong to have that happen. Lions need to suffocate it and they are not going anywhere near the throat with that sharp horn. I have never seen any number of lions kill a rhino and I never will.
No one can predict what will happen 40 years from now, not you nor I. And sorry but there's absolutely nothing these lions could have done to the rhino in this video. If you doubled the number of lions here, they still would have posed no threat.
way way:) A tiger kills indian rhinos on occasion, but he has better chances for an ambush. Lions started to hunt elephants because of shortage of other pray, elephants are even more badass. They can kill rhinos too, It's just too risky, because a rhino is a mean ass motherfucker:) Did you see a video where a rhino throws a warthog in the air?:)
@Kalagenesis

kiikiikhan they can’t kill Rhinos because it would take a male lion and they can’t risk injury so they run from Rhinos. And Rhinos sometimes kill elephants
Lions gave no chance winning a battle against a Rhinos..Rhinos are very powerful ..Rhinos can lift cars n trucks off the ground..lions cant do thst,, Rhinos are tough skin,,very tough skin..Rhinos weigh 6000 pounds, that's 3 ton..they will destroy lions..lions have no match..😁Rhinos are my favorite..they will survive against their enemies...
No...
this is a pestering at best.
