Revisiting the Abandoned Koi Pond
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
A revisit of the abandoned koi pond that we cleaned . Here you will get to see how the koi and goldfish that were abandoned are getting nibble now that their pond has been cleaned. You will also see us to pot the lily's which the fish kept knocking over

@Mountain_Aquatics

Good question! There were a couple of reasons. Firstly we did not know the condition of the waterproof seal on the pond. If we went too hard and damaged this then it would be a very expensive fix. Secondly we hope to improve the conditions of the pond over time. No point just scrubbing algae every few months if you don’t solve the problem. We looked at improving the filtration and adding a slimmer which will stop the excess in nutrients which is feeding the algae in the first place. This will solve the issue long term
Great Vid with good Advice ....Question >>> Wont the biig Fish in there comsume the Water Hyacinths ???
@Mountain_Aquatics
Жыл бұрын
They might have a nibble. But they were for free from another job anyway so it won’t matter
That green colour that you can still see, I'm guessing that's mostly because of moss or algea on the floor and walls of the pond, rather than in the water itself. The water looks quite clear.
@Mountain_Aquatics
Жыл бұрын
Yes the water if very clear. The pond is still settling in in time will look even better. We will pop back soon and pond vac the bottom
Really interesting to see this pond coming along. Out of curiousity, was there a reason the lillies weren't put in pots with gravel in the beginning?
@Mountain_Aquatics
10 ай бұрын
This was just how they came from the supplier and we weren’t due to do any work on the pond so just dropped them off and filmed a quick update
I still say put some plecostomus in there to eat the algae off the surfaces and that pond will look great with the natural stone surfaces.
@Mountain_Aquatics
2 ай бұрын
We can’t do that in the UK
The water looks so clear! I watched your winter update video and it's a pity the large gravel wasn't enough to stop the koi having a go. Maybe chicken wire over the top of the gravel? Or do you think thr plants need a cordoned-off area to establish?

my koi were DIGGING with a vengeance. turned the pond black in an afternoon. (i had soil topped with pea gravel. NOPE. not good enough. currently am doing flagstone chunks on top of that.) --v surprised you can do a soil-less planting. hadn't heard that anywhere before now. tho i DO have one that came in as just the root and it is indeed growing just floating in the water. (have it in a tub just inside the pond as a holdover till i could get to it.
@Mountain_Aquatics
Жыл бұрын
Yeah some plants are fine with just gravel. It’s handy to know which ones!
I've tried quite a few different water lillies in ponds with koi that size and the only one I could keep going long term was 'Marliacea Chromatella', the attention from the fish was just too much, very easy for a browsing carp to break off all the young shoots. I must have tried at least a dozen different varieties. The only difference I can think of is that Chromatella has a pineapple shaped rhizome. Some of the others might work if you can grow them to huge plant size, and thus very vigorous, before putting in the koi pond (or get them established when the fish are still small, not an option here, obviously). Also, the basket size might still be too small. I don't know if you said how many litres but they looked pretty small to me. A bulldozing carp can easily move small baskets so you might find them on the base of the pool next time you visit! 20 litres ought to be big enough basket size to remain in place (hopefully), ordinary garden loam or clay in the bottom and then the same size stones you used in layers on top. Good luck!
@Mountain_Aquatics
11 ай бұрын
These are a smaller type of Lilly, we hope the koi will leave them alone long enough for them to establish
@maf2001
11 ай бұрын
@@Mountain_Aquatics Good luck with that but I don't hold out much hope for them with that many carp in the pond. If I was running a business like yours I would buy in lillies, plant them up in the 35cm wide baskets, grow them on for a year or so in a koi-less pond to build up strength. Once they were strongly growing and potentially koi proof you could easily quadruple the price of a small lilly and people would pay.

Can you help please. We had at least 200 baby fish last year. Four different sizes. We had a fish rescue man to take some out and we had about 100 left. Different sizes. We have 2 koi and 5 goldfish plus a silver adult fish. All quite large. 8 or 9 ins but we don't know which the babies came from. Anyway end of March my husband cut the plants back, leaving some spreading ferny type on the ledges. I would say that at least half of the babies have disappeared in a week. We have those floating things on the water to keep the herons out and we've no dead bodies. Husband cleaned out the filter and no dead babies in there. Surely it's not the adult fish eating them because they haven't been all of this while. They're being fed. Hope you can help.
