Reviewing Tom Kerridge's EXPENSIVE £37 FISH AND CHIPS. A HUGE RIP OFF!!

Now, I had so many people in the comments recommending me to go back to Harrods to try Tom Kerridge's Fish and Chips which ended up costing £37. I won't give any spoilers in the description but the price was an absolute joke for what can only be described as a very mediocre meal.

What do you expect? Golden rule: NEVER, EVER go to any restaurant or cafe with a celebrity chef's name attached. Even before you walk in the door you are going to be ripped off. Add the Harrods name and you are going to be double ripped off. Go to a humble chippy where you'll not only get better portions at a third of the price but it'll probably taste better too.

Disagree. Went to Kerridge's restaurants in Bourne End a few times about 18-24 months ago and every time it was amazing. Fairly expensive, though not ridiculous, but well worth it. The real problem here is that it's Harrods. It's been a tourist trap for decades. Everyone in London knows to avoid it like an Angus Steakhouse.

I had to comment on this because I think you hit the nail on the head. They often label themselves ‘exclusive’. That’s from the verb ‘to exclude’ meaning to keep out. So the high prices are to exclude the poor. They could hardly put up a sign saying ‘No ordinary people allowed’ So they do it by charging so much that ordinary people are in practice excluded. So as you say, they pay for the pleasure of dining with their own kind!!

I just had a look at their current [it says April 2023] menu and it's £3.80 for cod, £2 for a small chips, which would still probably be three or four times more chips than Gary got here. That wasn't the best place in the world, of course, but if I could pay £5.80 for something that's 'good enough' and very filling or £37 for something that's disappointing and left me hungry, it's not a difficult choice.

A few years ago, wanting to take my wife to a good restaurant for our anniversary, I was tempted to a posh place by one of her socially climbing friends. Frankly, apart from the swingeing bill, the tiny-portioned food wouldn't have passed muster in a motorway cafe. As I left, I told the proprietor there was a difference between swank and service - and we wouldn't be back. He confirmed that decision with his profane language as I left without leaving a tip. Worse was to come. About a year later, in another (genuinely decent) restaurant, I recognised a waitress who had worked at that other place - who told me that everything they had served at exorbitant prices had come out of a freezer to be cooked by 'Chef Mike'. I don't name the place as - inevitably - it's now under new ownership. Though as its prices are still astronomical, I don't think I'll bother. And my wife's friend? She still believes it's a law of the universe that food automatically tastes better the more she pays for it.

Thanks for a great review Gary. I now steer well clear of paying silly money for celebrity endorsed eateries, as they are all well-disguised scams. Another recent rip-off for me was afternoon tea at Kensington Palace Pavilion. Pot of tea, a few basic sandwich quarters and shop bought cakes for £46 per person plus 12.5% service! And when we asked for another pot of tea it came back like dish water. They'd simply poured hot water over the same leaves used for the first pot! Never again.

I work here. It's expensive because we use the finest line-caught Cod, bought fresh from Billingsgate market each morning. The chips are made using Potatoes from a farm adjacent to the atlantic ocean where the sea air and seaweed compost gives them a distinct taste. It's a great experience to try after you've been walking around Harrod's all day, it's not something you are expected to eat every week like a corner fish and chip shop, it's a special treat.

Hmmm... you don't seem to understand how market sectoring works. Harrods has many decades strategic intent of attracting well-heeled customers. They intentionally target A++ income groups and don't care about (or want) the riff-raff - ie: you and me. Look at the luxury goods market for another example: A Louis Vuitton handbag can cost £25,000 - and it's "just a handbag". People who casually buy Vuitton handbags are totally unconcerned with its price - they are in the market sector that Vuitton is absolutely focused on targeting. While Tom's videos are interesting and appeal to us paupers, to knowingly go into a venue which you clearly can't afford to patronise, then criticise it, is disingenuous.

When I lived in the UK, there was an extremely popular Chinese chippie near us that, even though they had five people serving, as well as the kitchen staff, always had people queuing. Why? Always gigantic and thick pieces of fish and far too many chips to finish. But it was always fried to perfection. At the time, about six years ago, it cost about £5-50. Mind you, it didn't have tasteless sauces and a nice piece of lemon! I love to see these 'fancy' places being shown for what they are. Cheers, mate.

On a separate note: A fortnight ago, I brought a cone of chips ( smaller than a small portion ), a large carton of curry and a large haddock. It cost me £13. This is slap bang in the middle of the Midlands. The fish is basically the same size as a small used to be. The large fish is now 10oz. A large fish used to be big enough for two adults to share. Not any more. Fish, chips and curry is now so expensive, it is now a luxury.

You paid for the up keep of the grandeur surroundings, the fish and chips were £15 at most and £22 to cover the overheads. I posted this to Tom and Harrods on Twitter, I don’t expect any reply soon.. What really annoys me no end is the need to package good old fish in chips with the 'silly touches' like lemon wrapped in muslin and chips arranged, almost perfectly and upstanding in a deep dish. Whenever I see this malarkey, it's an instant red flag. Good fish and chips down the local chippy would equal any of these over priced peasant food imposters. Nationwide, there ought to be a ceiling price that can be charged for fish and chips, regardless of the establishment. Because it is what it is whether it's served on a silver platter with muslin wrapped lemons or on ikea crockery. Great review again and very enjoyable. Love these videos!

I think you might be missing the context: This is Harrods. I can't imagine people going there with the sole intention of just eating. I would also argue that this is more the lowest common food for picky people that still want to show how posh they are. The "look what I can afford but anything above mash and gravy is too exotic" sort. Because you are right in that you get the best in a chippy on the coast. But that isn't exactly rocket science and wouldn't fill a YT channel.

It is in Harrods, a world famous shop known for quality. Can you imagine how much the monthly rent would be? Staff would be paid London rates and the chefs would also receive “London waiting” ( help with accommodation) all these factors would add to the operating costs. Most chippers are family run and own the premises so we have a vast difference in operating costs.

I know a restaurant has a lot of overhead costs, and some customers don't seem to appreciate staff wages, rent, rates, utility bills,VAT etc have a big impact on gross profit margins, but having supplied restaurants with produce i have a good idea what food costs were on your plate. The wholesale fish costs (most expensive ingredient on the plate) would have been £3-£4 max.To charge £37 plus a 12.5% service charge is certainly in rip-off territory.Sadly i can't enjoy many dining out experiences because i know what the food costs are on any particular finished dish and there aren't many restaurants i have been to where the overall dining out experience has been worth the cost.I prefer Mexican,Indian and Greek food for the value for money aspect of good size portions at reasonable prices.I don't generally go Italian or Chinese because the food ingredients are cheap compared to what they charge........plus i can cook both cheaper myself anyway. It is only my subjective opinion.
