My rating is 10/10 for Gary, because not only was it one of his best vlogs, it also shows he's not doing it just for the money, so many others would have split this into 3,4 or 5 vlogs... Well done, loved it 👏

agreed Gary does very well informed videos for the best places to eat also been some nice locations , its nice to learn of food places I've never seen or heard of before, plus he's always very down to earth about what he really thinks about the food. 😊 yeah there would be people that would turn something like this into 6 or 7 videos and milk it the best they can but Gary he's not that person , he's as honest as they come.

I'm a 62 yr old Yank and I must say if Gary is any indication, Brits judge a fish and chips joint by it's mushy peas ad much as the fish and chips! To an American, this is the equivalent of judging a BBQ joint by it's potato salad as much as it's brisket or hamburger place by it's onion rings. I realize that not all Brits use the same judging criteria and I love Gary's honest reviews , I just crack up at his personal obsession with mushy peas. Everyone take care and as always Gary, "Lets give it a go!"

@@pheart2381 Royal fisheries was out goto place for years but we found that everything changed about 2 years ago. We now goto Silver Street Fisheries then walk up to Pannett Park .

Not only your best video but the best food review I've ever seen on KZread by any other vlogger, your reviews are honest as can be, a brilliant concept visiting 5 chipies, heard a lot about Trenches so I thought they would be number one and your video proved it, the rest of the scoring i totally agree with you, a bit disappointed with the Magpie as they used to be the mecca for fish & chips but thats why 62k watch your vlogs for honest reviews, being retired I've watched quite a lot on the box this week mainly due the weather but I can honestly say this is the best viewing I've had in the last month or so, carry on with the great work Gary.

Just visited Whitby for the first time with my girlfriend and baby daughter. We went to Trenchers based on this review. We ate in and were definitely not disappointed. £16.50 for haddock or cod with chips (no mushy peas), so a little pricier than take-away to be expected. The service and facilities were also fantastic at Trenchers. The best fish and chips I’ve ever had and Whitby is a lovely town. Great review Gary 😋👍🏻

Can’t argue with your result because I have only done Trenchers and the Magpie. I liked both, just done differently. I never have mushy peas, I can’t stand them but I always have tartare sauce with my fish and chips with a squeeze of lemon. There’s nothing better than some excellently cooked fish and chips. A real morale booster. 👍

You'll also find some of the worst fish and chips imaginable in Whitby. They prey on tourists who don't know any better.

This was up there with gone with the wind,what a saga and very entertaining .The most pertinent point you established was the good quality all round with only minor discrepancies between products ,well done and once again I gave it a go.

Got to say Trenches is the best. Magpie off season in the restaurant is great but don’t bother ordering anything with chips and no point even trying in the summer.

Gary, lovely video. Its oddly satisfying watching someone pick up a bit of battered fish, take a bite and seeing their reaction. Especially when they are as polite and reasonable as you are. I rated them as 9 - 7 - 8 - 8 - 7 Trenchers looked so good, but I don't think I'd be particularly disappointed with any of them if I'm honest. Glad you found your metal cutlery, the wooden stuff puts my teeth on edge. 😬

My partner is Coeliac, so we can't go to all of those chippy's. We always used to go to Abbey Wharf due to the good selection of GF food. Last time we went , their GF fryer was down, so we wandered down to Trenchers and were absolutely blown away by the quality of the battered fish. 10/10 for us. Any F+C loving coeliacs on here, get yersen to Trenchers.

Trenchers is my go-to lunchtime restaurant whenever I'm in Whitby. Trenchers also has a branch in Whitley Bay, in the refurbished Spanish City building. It's a very classy joint, and each time I've been there (perhaps 7 or 8 times in the past four years) the service and the quality of the F&C dinners have been excellent.

Glad you had a great time. The moon and sixpence is a lovely place to stay not cheap but fab .

Brilliant time in a lovely town

A fish and chip marathon. Now that's my kind of marathon! Whitby is a really lovely place although it's been some years since I last visited. Like you I was really surprised at the Magpie offering mostly because that is the one James Martin champions. The chips and the batter did look very sad. Maybe on another day the result could be very different but you can't judge them on 'what ifs' or 'maybes' only on what you were provided with which was fair. Where there is so much competition standards have to be consistent no matter who you are. Great job and you were blessed with good weather too. I could almost smell the sea air and the fish n chips!

Gary, five fish and chip shops in one video? As a Londoner stuck in the US this was torture to watch! There’s no decent fish and chips anywhere in the country. Here in Alabama all we have is Captain D’s feeble attempt. The only fish they have is pollock which looks like cod but has zero taste! Anyway, great vid!

Another excellent review Gary. My scores were the same as yours. However I would never have mushy peas in any universe! I just don’t like them, or ordinary peas for that matter! What I love is that most of them do skin on fish which I absolutely love, but here in Orkney it’s not a thing and I miss it! Apart from my sisters pub where she’ll do it for anyone who asks. Interested in why you chose haddock, that’s all we ever get here and I miss the choice of cod or sole or plaice etc. I’d probably not visit Whitby in summer it’ll be absolutely heaving, you went at just the right time, it looks stunning.

Good one Gary it was worth the wait! Epic episode, exactly what I hoped for. Some of the best fish and chips in the World Yorkshire coast, combined with West Yorkshire also. I agree Trenchers is number 1, but all are better than 99% elsewhere.

Nice video again, Gary! ❤ Cameraman hasn't eaten this good in a long time!! don't be making a habit of this! 🤣🤣 I know you said the Magpie was cooked to order, but did you see them fry the chips then and there? my theory is: they're usually so packed with lines going around the block, that the chips that are being fried are served as soon as they're done cooking. They can barely cook them, as fast as they're going out again. It's almost an immediate turn around, and that adds an element of freshness you can't beat, I reckon. Whereas, when it's not jam-packed, they're probably not gonna blow you away because they've just been sat, even if just for a few secs/mins. It's like when you get McDonalds chips. If you've ever had them straight out the fryer, they are so hot/crispy/fluffy, it's night and day compared to the ones which have been stood on the rack keeping warm. When we were last there, we saw the lines at Trenchers and Magpies and just found somewhere else randomly. Tried the "Fish Box" just down the road, in and out in a few minutes, and had some really nice quality chips/pies, staff were nice too. Best chips I've ever had, were at the Lifeboat Bar in Scarborough, always had quality fish/chips from there without fail. (they've also got a funny sign inside which says the explanation for "Scraps" up north, and a long list of INCORRECT names other people use for them... 🤭😂)

Gary, you are once again bang on the money with your scoring of the 5 fish and chip shops you reviewed. We're lucky enough to be only 90 mins from Whitby, so we do visit regularly. Fish and chips are a 'must have' in Whitby, and we were convinced that the "only" place for this classic was The Magpie. Yes, they're fine, but in my opinion, slightly over rated. Then one visit, we tried Trenchers, and that is now the go to place for us. Good, honest and really helpful review for potential day trippers to the home of Dracula !

Excellent video and review by Gary. Really clever idea to conduct 5 takeaways back to back in one video. Some other vlogers would make 5 videos out of this. Gary;s reviewing and detail is excellent , and agree with his results. The Haddock does look lovely , and some of the chips excellent. Must say most of the peas looked poor. Best to just have the fish and chips. Great stuff Gary as usual. Agree Whitby is such a super place , one of the most special places in the UK.

This is a fantastic down to earth channel. I am addicted! PS very informative too. I have been to that chipper in Whitby. It’s very good… I don’t think I have had bad experience for fish and chips in whitby.

Good to see you in my ancestral home where my Great Uncle landed in Victorian times 🧛 For me Trenchers was best overall, just get the mushy peas from the Magpie Cafe. I'm planning on moving back to Whitby next year and I will be sampling the fish & chips. As a proper Northerner, I need top quality mushy peas which should be radioactive green with the consistency of thick porridge. Compared to my neck of the woods, seeing fish, chips & mushy peas for just £10-£12 is amazing. Where I live, haddock is £13.40 on its own.

I noticed at least a couple of the haddock were defo overcooked, flakes looked dry and rough rather than smooth and glistening. Another awesome post Gary👍

1st, Trenchers 10, 2nd Hadleys 91/2, 3rd Abbey Wharf 8, 4th Magpie 7 1/2, 5th Silver Street 7. So good to see you in Whitby, I grew up just outside Whitby, we always went to Hadleys but I've been to Trenchers and Magpie, I agree Magpie was the most disappointing of the 3 I've been to. A great video Gary, must have been hard work all those fish and chips 😏

Great review again Gary 👍🏾 Some great fish meals there. Personally I always like skin on as you can tell what fish you are getting. The secret to getting the excellent batters you got apart from Magpies is leaving lumps in the batter and not over beating it. When the fish cooks the lumps explode giving that lovely crispy curls on the fish. Look like Magpies were over zealous with the mixing 😊 As for chips, I love those crispy bits that you didn’t like 😂

Great reviews. I can give a fairly informed appraisal, as I live 40 miles from Whitby and go there a lot. I've eaten at all 5 restaurants and I think your experience was pretty typical of all 5 takeaways. No 1 for me would be Trenchers. It's always consistently excellent in every way (though I have never tried their mushy peas, nor have I anywhere else. I prefer curry sauce). No 2 (by the tiniest margin) would be Hadleys. Never been disappointed in any way. The fish is always excellent, the batter delicious and the chips tasty. On some occasions, it's been better than Trenchers. No 3 would be Abbey Wharf. The fish and batter has always been spectacular, but the chips can be a bit variable. No 4 would be Silver Street. It's a lot cheaper and the portions are a bit smaller, but I've never had a greasy portion. I always ask him to rest it a few minutes, as I do everywhere. It's just round the corner from where I stay in Skinner Street, so it's convenient. But, if I can be bothered, I'll go to Trenchers or Hadleys. No 5 would be The Magpie. I've only had 2 takeaways (about 5 years ago, admittedly) and they were really ordinary. The fish was good (there's no excuse for it not to be when you're 50 m from where it's landed), but they couldn't get the batter right, the portion was a bit small and the chips were underdone. BUT - don't be put off eating INSIDE The Magpie Cafe. The standards are vastly higher and the fish and chips are amongst the very best I've ever tasted. And some of the seafood on sale is absolutely breathtakingly good. I'm popping up to Whitby tomorrow (if the weather's good) and I shall have to decide whether to eat a takeaway at Hadleys or Trenchers or splash some cash and eat in at The Magpie. What a nice dilemma.

50m from where its landed?? I have lived in Whitby all my life, the fish is landed mainly in scotland and comes down by freezer trucks, check out the moor road at 4 in the morning, you would need a fleet of boats that would more than fill the harbour to supply all the fish consumed in whitby every 24 hours, so not 50metres , more like 400miles!!

@@RJAThere are no boats in whitby suitable to catch cod/haddock , only shellfish, there is a column of artic reefer trucks travel from peterhead during the night to supply Whitby, I see them every morning, maybe you can tell me which boats land enough fish in Whitby??

Gary, this was truly one of your best reviews! I know I grumble a bit about the "comparison videos", (the last grumble being Miller & Carter) because they are sometimes not like-for-like or apples-to-apples comparisons. But this one was 100% spot on; 5 equal comparisons in a single video was mind blowing! This video was one of your longest but honestly, I was so drawn into it, the 30 ish minutes felt like 30 seconds! It would be amazing if you could do more of these, they are a joy to watch. However, I am a little biased because fish and chips is my absolute solid favourite out of anything. This video was so good, I honestly and genuinely watched it twice! ♥ It would be wrong for me to predict any scores because I could easily watch the video and just repeat yours 😝 Review 1: That to me was perfection in a box! That batter on the fish was so plentiful it was like having "scraps" which I truly love but is not common in London. Those chips looked perfectly cooked. I would give both the fish and the chips 10/10 obviously on looks alone which is no real measure, but the peas did not look the best although still good. So, overall your 9/10 seemed perfectly fair. I do need to get up there and try that overly battered fish for myself - WOW! Review 2: The fish was not so well battered and those chips looked a bit soggy. Again, it is so difficult to judge on looks alone. The peas looked better than "Review 1", because they were in more liquid and did not look so dry, although you said they tasted too sweet and undercooked. Overall, from a visual aspect I cannot disagree with your 7/10 Review 3: OK, I am struggling to compare this with "Review 1"! The only noticeable difference seemed to be the less batter i.e. no flaky "scraps". But everything else matched "Review 1". I would call it 8.9/10 just for the less batter. 😃 Review 4: FFS! Those peas had a nasty brown tinge to them, no wonder you did not like them. Mushy peas are often served in malt vinegar which can sometimes give a brownish colour, but if it were just malt vinegar, you would have mentioned it. So the "brown" came from something else - yuk! That fish was by far the beat (so far) because it was so thick yet still moist. Your score of 7.5/10 was spot on...Let's break the score down: Peas = 5/10, Chips = 7.5/10, Fish 10/10. So overall 22.5 divided by 3 = 7.5/10 - Spot on! Without giving my full address away, I should probably ask you to review my local Fish and Chips takeaway in North West London! I love it, but you may not! Bear in mind, my usually order includes the "seafood medley" as well as fish (cod) and chips but not just fish and chips.🤣 Review 5: Worst batter, best fish, worst chips and best peas. I would have scored that a 5/10 😝You were right to call out the soggy batter! Unless you are ordering plain skinless fish then the batter needs just as much judgement as the fish itself. 7/10 was generous. So! it is now 20.02 in London and you have forced me to order Fish and Chips! To whom should I send the bill? 🤣Obviously I am joking! I loved this video so much! Thank you! Lastly, Gary, please do not consider your reviews or scores as being "harsh", they are always perfectly honest and fair. You are the most genuine food reviewer on KZread! ♥
