Reviewing the Nikkor Z 18-140mm

Ғылым және технология

Kon and Becky have had a bit of time with Nikon's versatile 18-140mm now, from shooting in Greenwich and comparing it with the 24-200mm for versatility (which is a whole other video you should check out) to using on the Z 50 and the Z fc, they've put it through its little paces and here's what they thought about it.
If you're a DX shooter let us know if this is a lens you'd consider in the comments below!

Welcome back Becky! Hardest thing to do is going back to work after a holiday. Unless you LOVE YOUR JOB 😉. I have the DX 18-140mm Z lens and love it. One lens that can take the place of two is always preferable. Kon did a fantastic job while you were away.

I am glad that I invested in one of these lenses, agreeing with your comments regarding sharpness. The only critisism that I have is with Nikon, not making the lens hood available at the same time as the lens. The 18-140 is now permanently attached to my Zfc, lovely combination.

Thanks for the review. I've recently purchased the Nikon Zfc and absolutely love it. I also have the Z6ii and several other Z lenses. However, I'm at the point in my life where I prefer a smaller, lighter camera and lens for street photography and vacationing. The 18-140 seems to the versatile lens I would use often. Thanks again for your thoughts on this lens. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the review. I have a Z50/16-50mm which I take alongside my D500 and it looks like the lightweight nature of this lens will be perfect for extending the reach of the Z50. This will definitely be the next addition to my kit bag.

I’m very happy with the two lens kit as it gives me a range from 16-250mm, and both are very sharp especially the telephoto. What Nikon really needs to make more than another similar quality lens covering the same focal length is an ultra wide zoom and then a more pro model mid range zoom with a metal mount and constant aperture, either f2.8 or f4.

I originally got my Z fc with the 28mm kit and was missing the versatility of a zoom. I got this 18-140mm zoom mainly for travel and it has been a lot of fun to use. Barely leaves the camera now.

I love the 18-140. It is has replaced the 16-50 in my travel kit.

Bought a Z50 ( my first proper camera ) with the DX 18-140mm lens and was very pleasantly suprised. Nice crisp shots throughout it's range , capable of excellent bokeh . A good choice of lens to go with Z50 entry level camera. My only gripe is that the telescoping barrel has a sticky spot occasionally , hope this is not a made in Thailand thing. Ps. Went bonkers and bought the Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S and put it on the Z50 , close shots of flowering grasses are astounding for an ap-c with that lens.

Great video and review guys, love the look of this lens, have the Z50 and the lack of DX lens with VR is a real shame at the moment. At the moment I'm using all my old F-Mount lens on the Z50 and really happy with the results. I really hope that Nikon bring out better DX mount cameras like a mini Z9 and with Canon have a few more in their range now sure it will be soon. Would be nice to have a DX body with built in VR and be able to buy lens that don't need VR. I would buy this lens but really hope Nikon come out with a flag ship AR-C camera like they did with the full frame Z9, thats what I'm saving my money for! Thanks again.

Even though I have the 16-50 and 50-250 lenses for my Z50, I bought this lens for lightweight travel (hiking and cycling) where it is much more convenient. I was willing to compromise some on image quality, but I find the compromise is surprisingly small. All in all, I anticipate using this lens quite a bit for travel photography. I do agree with those who complain about the lack of an included lens hood. For the price, I feel that should have been included.

What do you mean by compromising IQ? Is it softer than the 16-50 or 50-250?

Looks to be a great lens . Certainly when in your hands Becky and Kon . Another great set of pics , as always . After watching so many of your vids re the Z series I`m starting to warm to the idea of adding some Z gear to my trusted F mount gear . Possibly . Can`t decide .

I feel the same! I shoot raptors in flight 99% of the time and I am waiting on a Z9 equivalent crop sensor and some bigger glass like the coming 200-600mm...As of now except for the Z9 I can't find a Z camera that will autofocus as good as my ole trusty D500..I'm partial to aps-c because of the 1.5× crop factor..I'm sure Nikon has something in the works to replace the D500 and D850, I will wait for those because I'm not switching brands!

Great review! I would like to see Nikon make a 'muffin' sized 70mm f/2.5 FX lens so that the DX user can have a choice of 42mm / 60mm and 105mm equivalent primes that can be used on FX as small 28mm / 40mm / 70mm primes.
