I took the z50 (with both kit lenses and a 50mm 1.8G) on a big hike in the Himalayas. It was between the z50 and my trusty D810….the little mirrorless camera blew me away. It’s the same beautiful Nikon raw files I love. Robust, familiar and ergonomically perfect. What they’ve done with the mirrorless system has been impressive. 🧐👏

Great review Legend! I like the thoughts of the Zfc. If I were to have the choice, it would be the one. I really like the classic design. I don't think that I will be laying down my old Canon for a while though... Keep up the great work, Sir!

Hi Ralph. Excellent run through on the DX bodies. I got the Z50 when it came out and it came with a smallrig base like the one you showed for the ZFC. It doesn’t have a grip obviously but it allows you to mount a tripod or vlogging stand and still use the screen. Works fine. I’m looking forward to the Sigma DX lenses coming out soon. I love my Viltrox 13mm F1.4. Got some excellent shots at Uluṟu for sunrise and sunset. Take care.

I have recently purchased a Zfc in chalk blue, absolutely loving it so far. I am really looking forward to learning more. I must admit the retro look did take a part in my choice. I also have the small rig grip, makes such a great difference.

That’s great to hear. It’s a too little camera.

I have the zfc. I love it! I bought that instead of the z50 because of the flip out screen and the type c port that lets you charge it even if the camera is on. The lack of grip was a stress factor at first but then I bought the Smallrig bracket and I don't worry anymore. I would never choose the z30 because it doesn't have a viewfinder.

@@RalphMayhewPhotography since my previous camera was a D90 I love that I can see the result of what I'm shooting and of course the flip out screen. The retro design is a plus but not the reason for buying it. Still, my friends call me a "hippster" 😂 Love that it's lightweight, compact (when using the kit lens), has almost everything I need (the lack of IBIS is frustrating for bigger lenses) and overall fun to use.

Just bought the Z50 two weeks ago, no regrets. The built-in flash is handy and I could never see myself shooting outside in a bright sunny environment without a viewfinder on my camera, that's why I could not choose the Z30. I have chosen the 18-140 lens and the 12-28, they should cover most situations. It would be nice travelling that light now.

I have been with nikon for many years. My last nikon dslr was the nikon 7100 and i would`nt consider myself a beginner. About a year ago i bought a z50, mostly to have a small travel-camera on my side, and I`m amased by the picture-quality, the z50 delivers. That`s what I`m interested in: picture-quality! Beside that, with the ftz- adapter i can use all my great nikon prime lenses!

I was torn between between Zfc and Z30 and it was no go on Z50 as I needed full rotating screen for vlogging. I decided on Z30 as it has Usb C plug in for continuous power for studio setup. I would only miss the evf, but then again I have other cameras like Z5 with it, but that one is sometimes bulkier to take along for everyday street use and family use, compared to the smaller z30. I will get the kit lens and z 18-140mm for decent zoom in apsc. Thanks for review, it helped me decide.

I have recently started to study photography, and I'm facing the biggest decision to make, which in this case is, what camera to buy. I was in between the Z30 and the Z50. This video helped me out to clarify what's the best option for a beginner like me, and by the end of the video I was able to come to a conclusion. Very well done.

Good one .. Thanks. I use the ZFC for travel mostly. The "retro" look means I don't stand out during street photography as I use often the pancake kit zoom lens. I use the adaptor F II Z for my other stable of lenses and have found they work quite nicely, especially the f1.8 prime lenses. Light and compact ... suits my needs.

I bought the Z30 for video only. I have a Z8 and a Z7ii, and although the video on the Z8 is great, it’s too heavy and more than I need for 85 percent of my video needs. The Z30 mounted to my gimbal creates awesome video.

It’s a DX camera which is crop sensor. Means it has some limitation with lenses. You want lenses that have DX and auto focus with a Z mount. Have you considered the Z5? It’s cheap, full frame, more lens choice and honestly easier to use than the Zfc.

Hi Ralph! Nice video as I research these different cameras. You mentioned that the Z30 sensor is different and you're not the first person who's mentioned that. But, in my research, I can't find a difference noted by Nikon. Australia, USA and Germany manuals all show the same sensor in the specs. 🤷‍♂

@@RalphMayhewPhotography Right around 2:35. For some reason, there seems to be differing opinions on the sensors when it seems they should all be the same. One source even claimed it was not a BSI sensor while the others were. I could see Nikon using a different sensor since its focus is video and maybe even a different sensor would operate cooler. Who knows, just thought I would mention it.

hmmmm@@markwornom1050 I just checked the video and went back to the source, which was Nikon's website and cannot see any difference between the sensors now. Very strange. It would appear they are identical, however I remember doing the initial research and saw that they were different and thinking 'that's weird, but ok.' Thanks for pointing it out.

chose the Z30 over the Z50. Z50 is 4+ years old now, and THAT is a LONG time. Also weighs a little more than the Z30. I wanted the absolute min weight/size camera that still had detachable lenses, and wanted to stick with Nikon due to all the support gear i already have. Am happy with the choice

I struggle with no eye piece to look at to make sure I’m in focus and composed well 🤷🏼‍♂️ the z30 is excellent for vlogging but very frustrating to photograph with, I find.

Excellent video. The Zfc has the "vintage" look but does not come with mic like Z30 I am torn between the two 😂

Nikon has a tendency to leave a feature or two, or three, out of different cameras, so much so that there never seems to be ONE camera that will satisfy. No mic on the Z50; there's one on the Z30, but no EVF.

Hi I’m a journalism student and want to shoot documentaries abroad but also want to take photos while I’m along the way, was wondering which one you think would be best. My dad used to be a photographer also and has a lot of different lenses for Nikon and I’m just intrigued which one sounds best ?

The Z50 is a fantastic little camera. I went from a D5200 and have a set of really good DX glass and with the FTZ adapter the Z50 is the perfect transition from DSLR DX to Mirrorless DX. All lenses (Nikon & Sigma) works perfectly with the adapter. The Z50 can be had for a bit over $500 (USD) on the used market with warranty. So in short. Are you a DSLR DX user with a set of great DX lenses and doesn't want to buy all new glass and save a buck? The Z50 is for you.

I was looking for something that could zoom better than my compact g7x ii and has a view finder. Saw a good deal on Z50 "double kit" 16-50 and 50-250 lenses. Now I'm trying to figure out if i should go for it. It is a bit more expensive than RX10 iii and less expensive than RX10 iv but those are 1" sensor bridges just like my g7x ii and maybe it is a time to upgrade? Zfc looks cool but I grew up with the soviet Zenit-E SLR and I don't have any nostalgic feelings for it. I still have it and I havent felt the need to load it with film since I got my first 12MP digital canon camera. They should have added a film roller handle to force a roll back every 36 shots. That would be funny 😂

The z50 zoom would be good. 👍 A helpful question might be, do you want to buy into the Nikon ecosystem? I’m always keen for hear that will allow my creative options to grow. Bahahaha about the Zfc. I know what you mean. That roller handle to eject the sd cards or something would have been super cool!!

@@RalphMayhewPhotography What I love about my Z50, compared to the compact cannon, is the view finder. It is a completely different feeling of photography than just using the screen. This is relevant to Z30 as well. I enjoy the activity more with the VF. Regarding subjecting myself to an ecosystem, I don't know, they all seem the same to me. I am not planning to make many additional purchases. I bought an FTZ with Nikon 35mm/1.8 from some guy and I got a m42 adapter for my two old soviet lenses from my Zenith SLR. Now I have 5 lenses in total. I feel overwhelmed already. The thing is that mirrorless is a game changer in terms of adaptability. All DSLR lenses can be potentially adapted to any mirrorless system without any optics in the adapter. So when I need any specific lens that is not Nikon, I can get it and buy an adapter for the whole "ecosystem". But I don't think I need any yet. I am having enough fun with soviet lenses. The thing I have no idea about is post processing and printing. That I will have to learn.

I’ve been shooting with the Z30 for the past week along with my old D3300 and my only comment is I miss the EVF. There is also the question of the lens. The choice is still poor and expensive. I’ve got some old F lenses I could use with the adapter, especially my favourite prime 35mm but moving forward, will the Z lenses come down with prices? Will Nikon accept a third party lens? (Sigma?) so, I’m not 100% sold on my purchase, still considering to switch to Sony (plenty of lenses) thx

Interesting call. I wouldn’t recommend the z30 for photography because of the lack of EVF. I’ve found the lens (at that focal range on a crop sensor), goes pretty well. There’s a few other good lenses but far more now in the FX range - that’d be for Z5 and up. Good question about third party. Probably, I think it’s already happening actually with some brands. I reckon the camera to get in a DX format is the Z50.

Can you set auto iso at all in manual mode on the Zfc?

I am looking for my first camera on a budget (540 - 660 USD). I have an Egypt trip in November. Need an all-rounder camera for landscape, architecture followed by street, portrait shots and low light shots inside museums and wide shots of pyramids etc. Please recommend if I should buy dslr or Mirrorless? And apsc or full frame? There are plenty of olx ads of apsc nikon d3500, d1500, d7200, d5600, canon 200d, canon 200 D mark ii, Canon EOSm50ii , sony zve10, sony a6000, sony a6400, nikon z30, nikon z50. Full frame D850, nikon z5 and nikon z6, canon EOS mark 3 ( But these 4 are costly). D610 ad is within my budget but heard it's outdated. Used lenes are available but only for apsc dslr for nikon and canon.

To achieve those requirements, especially low light you’ll want to go full frame. I recommend mirrorless and it’s much easier to use and quicker to learn. For your budget though I’m not sure you’ll get either. Also you’ll need some lenses to achieve all you want. Probably a f2.8 24-70 and a wide lens. And maybe a telephoto. You won’t be able to get all of that on your budget though. 🤷🏼‍♂️🥲

Caution! I recently downloaded firmware for the Zfc from Nikon. When I hit the upload, the camera shut itself down and would not restart. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note - I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem?

Oh wow!! That sux so bad!! I’ve never had or heard of this before but I won’t be updating the Zfc firmware for a while!

How much comparable would the AF in z50 is to the A6400. I love the z50 for ergonomics and heard it's better in IQ, dynamic range and low light than the sony. But everyday's saying its very bad and all while in some videos I saw the z50 Af being very fast and reliable like the a6400. So according to you how much worse it is or is it on par?

I haven’t used the a6400 in a long time. It’s a good camera though. In terms of AF if you have an equivalent lens on both for accurate testing, I’d imagine the Sony comes out just ahead. I’d be looking at tracking effectiveness though, more than af speed. But at the end of the day it depends what your photographing. If it’s all fast moving objects you’d probably prefer a camera that’s another couple of degrees better. If it’s just everything, everyday, then af speed is a minor consideration between the two. Hope this helps.

Personally I’d choose the z50 if I had to choose from these three.

Not sure where you getting your prices from. Z30 sells for $606.00 body since day one, and $695.00 with 16-50mm lens. I got my Z30 on sale with creator's kit for $759.00.

Better than any smartphone if u want to take family photos,wedding,low loght photos etc and u really want to retain the details..

z50 better price with all function. just buy smallrig if u video blogger) i shoot 60k now. very nice raw, not bad autofocus but nikon ignore ap-s and not create normal dx lenses. Okay nikon i buy viltrox now.

The most important factors of all weren't discussed: 1. Picture quality 2. Video quality.

True but if you want them why not go the Z50?

What's the point of going off auto-ISO on the 20Mp Nikons when the sensor is ISO invariant? There's nothing to be gained in terms of limiting noise by changing the ISO. Seems like Nikon knows this so they didn't place much importance in having Auto ISO on the dial. Users hung up on no auto-ISO switch on these Nikons don't understand their camera.

Well my experience of shooting the same scene with highest iso and lowest iso is the high iso is extremely noisy. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@RalphMayhewPhotography The question is why would you shoot that way if you truly want to optimize for image quality? Someone explained it better in another video: "I am often surprised when I see that people manually choose Iso in P, S, A mode. It often doesn't make much sense in P,S,A mode. I guess that the reason is that many people including professional photographers and professional reviewers don't understand what Iso is. For example, a high Iso leads to slightly less(!) noisy raw data, if exposure time and f-number are constant. The noise of the raw data depends mainly on the light conditions, the exposure time and f-number, not necessarily on the Iso. And if you choose a fixed Iso in P mode, you will waste light, if the light conditions get better or you will get blurry results when the light conditions get worse. If you choose a fixed Iso in S mode, you will again waste light, if the light conditions get better and the images can suffer from diffraction due to a high f-number, etc.. So, actually, an Iso dial is quite useless. And in M mode, Iso should be controlled by the brightness setting (often known as exposure compensation even though the term is wrong because Iso doesn't affect the amount of light in M mode, so it doesn't affect the exposure, but it affects the brightness)."

I want to punch someone in Nikon for not making the tilt screen the same like ZFC and Z30 on my Nikon Z50.

Yeah I feel ya! The z50 it does flip all the way down.

That was considered a bad move by pretty much everybody on day one! What? It flips on the bottom? Uh, ok, but no!

I was about to get the Z 50 , but you better than nothing help understand that it was garbage.

My guess would be the number and type of changes complimenting their future plans for camera bodies 🤷🏼‍♂️

Sorry, one more comment, the video while walking (vlogging) is miserable in comparison to my iPhone 13 or GoPro 10. That’s a no go definitely.

I guess it depends what you’re after. I feel the phone is good but you get limited depth of feel with it feeling over saturated and too contrasty. All my recent vids (bar the z9 issues) have been shot on the z30. The z9 issues was shot on my iPhone and I had to edit it lots 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nikon has a crappy autofocus system. A lot of mistakes even on static objects. This also seems to be z8

I bought Z50 around a year ago. Earlier I had 7100. I am using my old DX lenses with the FTZ adaptor. It is producing great photos and I am really happy with it. Though it is termed as an entry level camera, but it is giving pro quality results.
