This review perfectly summaries ALL of my major frustrations shopping for reasonably priced mid-range mirrorless cameras. As I'm testing a Z50 along with my trusty D500, I've concluded that I wish "professional gear" had the scene modes in consumer cameras and smartphones. Still, I believe a better approach is to photography is hardware that utilizes a smartphone for ALL processing, viewing, and storage. Sony was on the right track with the QX series. So far the Z50 is MUCH better with faster (affordable/value) DX lenses than the Z lenses and the last firmware update.

@@johnxantoro5511 I dont necessarily see that. After all, with the 1.8 primes, you get robust build and weathersealing, something I would like to have. Other than that, for the time being, you are probably right. In my case, the M6 ii is the best bet, because I crop frequently. I can digitally crop 2x, and still get 8MP with almost 1-inch sensor size left.(using the primes for enough resolving power). Sufficient for good 16x24 inch prints.

@@andreasbuder4417 The thing is this: FF lenses on APS-C is good for Nikon but bad for the customer. You pay with weight, size and money for an image circle you simply don't need. Nikon doesn't respect APS-C at all and it is easy to demonstrate: F-Mount APS-C (DX) has been around for 18 (!!) years and Nikon only made 4 primes for it so far. Two of those primes are macros and one is a fucking fisheye. In 18 years Nikon didn't bother to even make a 35 or 28 or 85 mm equiv. lens for DX. It's absolutely pathetic and an insult to the customer.

Some things that should be noted: 1. The X-T30 has a 10 minute time limit in 4K. 2. The M6ii overheats after about 40 minutes of continuous 4K. 3. The M6ii is a very laggy camera when it comes to photos, with an obnoxiously loud shutter that vibrates through the whole body. After pressing the shutter the screen then freezes an instant that is certainly noticeable and irritating. 4. The Z50 looks cleaner than the previously mentioned when recording video in higher iso and it doesn’t overheat, but has no compact primes.

It has poor ergonomics (too small buttons, menu systems is not that great and the it doesn't feel good in my hands). I don't like the manual dials on top of the camera either. It is not easy to dial in the right settings while composing. I just returned from a vacation with the Z50 and I'm surprised how much I love this little camera. Agree with all the video, expect with the lenses part. Yeah, Fuji has nice native APSC lenses, but the choice in sony is bigger: The Sigma trio: 16, 30 and 56mm f1.4 that give a run for the monay to the Fuji counterparts (and in the case of the 30mm and 56mm, has also better AF too). Small FF lenses: You can use the good 28mm f2, 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8, 55mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8. And in the case of 28, 50 and 85, they have a really good pricing too. Telephoto: Wildlife and sports are better covered with all the telephoto lenses Sony has, while Fuji only offers the 100-400 and the 200 f2 + TC. Future: Tamron just released a 28mm and 35mm f2.8 that are really good and with great close focus, with a 20mmf2.8 coming, and also a 17-28 f2.8 that is really nice. Also, Fuji has a major lens flaw: The 35mm f1.4, and 56mm f1.2 has terrible AF, and the 23mm f1.4 is far from the "Fujicrons" in this aspect too, so much that in every fujirumorus website, when they made polls about new lenses, they mark II version of this lenses are always the most demanded.

I agree, the lens selection for Sony E mount is by far the biggest. There are no really long telelens available for Fuji and third party lenses are lacking. Both Fujifilm and Sony needs to release mark 2 version of some of their oldest lenses, but Fuji probably more so than Sony.

and yet the 35 1.4 is still the one you can pry from my cold dead hands. It's older, it's not as fast as the newer ones, yet it's lovely and charismatic and in no way "bad" just because it's not fast enough or weather sealed. Calling it a "major flaw" can only come from people who are comparing stats, not pictures. Some people use all manual Leica lenses, they're not usually known as the flaws of the lineup...

  • @problemat1que

Even the infamous XF 35mm F1.4 focuses as fast as I can press the shutter on a current gen (X-T3/X-T30) body for single AF. For continuous AF, it's another story but I wouldn't shoot sports with these lenses anyway.

I’m just so glad that through a little research and a lot of dumb luck I picked up a Sony a6000 a number of years ago on Black Friday. Sony has such a robust mirrorless system, and their one-mount strategy creates a path between their enthusiast and pro cameras, which is a very valuable benefit. When I bought my full frame body, I didn’t also have to scramble and buy all new glass because I planned ahead and bought a few full frame lenses for my a6000 before I got a full frame body.

  • @JB_Hobbies

@SF6 I disagree with you. The one mount making it easy for me to go to full frame was one of the reasons I went with Sony. This let me stay with the same system and keep all my old gear once I decided to go full frame. Knowing this, I bought both full frame and aps-c lenses for my a6000. Once I decided to go full frame, I already had some full frame lenses that I was already using and didn't immediately need to go buy new lenses. In my personal experience, I found the one mount to be very practical and valuable due to its flexibility.

When shooting at ISO 1600+ at F4 -200 I got yellow and purple horizontal lines in some picture. When I was shooting outside at daylight it was gone? No idea what I did wrong. That bad thing happens a lot on mine mostly when I use it for studio portrait with manual mode (SS 1/125, ISO 160, and Aperture ranges about 4 to 8). It can freezes for more than 5 times during about 3 or 4 hours of photo shoot. It really makes me so bad because i missed a lot of great moments when taking portrait picture due to freezes accidentally. When my X-T30 freezes, the lamp indicator above joystick turn orange and I've to take the battery off then insert it again. So Annoying. I used to think this freezing issue just happens to my X-T30. But it happens too to many people I'd read/watched their experience from googling. It happened since previous generations like X-T20 or X-T2. And i wonder why Fuji doesnt aware this issue. So, in my opinion, Fuji X-T30 is unreliable camera for portrait photography untill they release new firmware to fix this annoying & embarrasing issue. Fuji should assures that everything basic is well done or running smoothly without any problem before they improve their product with additional or advanced features.

But the FTZ adapter itself is already 200€/USD $200. I would like to have 1 ! native, not adapted main driver (size, autofocus without compromises) and would be happy to adapt more glass with good value for price for all other scenarios that I do every now and then. As much as would like to buy the Nikon z50 or Canon M6ii, these both fail in this approach as there is no decent standard zoom with good sharpness, not too slow and of okay‘ish feel/haptic. :-( ;-( My current considerations against one or the other: Canon: EVF + native Glass Nikon: native glass just FF and way to expensive for me, but superb upgrade option Sony: Touchscreen implementation, EVF resolution, EF glass expensive, though decent primes for price 3rd party. Have A6000 unused on the shelf, don‘t enjoy it. Fuji: Looks like the roundest package, but nothing longer than the XC50-230 which has f6.7 at the long end OR pay >1.000 €/$ USD. X-S10 looks promising though.

I saw a software comment down below, so it's probably a good idea to mention that Capture One offers a Fujifilm version that is tuned to Fujifilm cameras and RAW output. Capture One is a Lightroom equivalent, and depending on who you talk to, better than Lightroom. Capture One is more expensive when buying the full camera supported version, but the Fujifilm only version is cheaper. Capture One also supports external editors, so I can jump in and out of the NIK suite or the Affinity suite without leaving Capture One. For the amateur market that these cameras are aimed at, the Capture One Fujifilm version is a good alternative. There's a Sony version as well. I've done the dial control with DSLRs, mirrorless and P&S cameras - the Fujifilm approach to a traditional control layout drew me into their product line. To my mind, this is what really separates Fujifilm from the rest. It's not for everyone obviously, but it should be given a higher profile in these reviews. We can also go the dial approach on Fujifilm cameras if we wish, so there's no loss by incorporating a traditional control layout, only gains. This is worth pointing out in reviews.

I've been tempted by Fuji for a long time but there is just no lens selection to compete with what I can get for Canon (any Canon mount), or Nikon, or even M43. I've checked many times. There is just no good affordable lens combo in the Fuji world. The choice is especially limited for long telephoto. Yes, they have some good lenses which are worth their enthusiast/semi pro prices but for me to perceive those as great affordable options I'd need to be surrounded by endless top new gear that someone else is buying.

I'm a diehard Nikon guy but I bought a dirt cheap used a6000 (shutter actuation less than 2,000) with a pancake 20mm 2.8 lens attached to it from a lady friend. It's my get-and-go camera I use to scout construction sites (my business). After a while I gave away that a6000 body (retaining the pancake lens) and acquired a used a6300 from a neighbor who upgraded to a6500. Actually, I like the sleek, sturdy and minimalist design of Sony a6xxx series - no protruding viewfinder on the top plate. I do my first shoot with the a6300 (test and review) before I set up my Nikons. And as long as the a6xxx design remains the same I will continue to upgrade and scout for good value second-hand units

I would avoid the Canon just because it's hard to say whether Canon have any intention of supporting the mount into the future. The Sony and Nikon share a mouth with the companies' full-frame flagship mirrorless cameras so you can count on continued support. And Fuji, without a doubt, already has the most complete APS-C mirrorless lens lineup of any mount even though there's no pathway to full-frame.

Canon are selling a lot of them though, so lenses are going to be available for a long time (plus an infinite number of cheap EF lenses to adapt). They will probably sell more M6mk2s than Fuji sell in total, they are almost certainly selling more M50s than Fuji's total mirrorless unit sales. Against that designing lots of new RF lenses will likely slow new EF-M lens appearances. Also Sony and Nikon have really bad records on making many useful DX/APS lenses. Fuji have a lack of stabilised primes (for low-light/video) and several old but good lenses have slow AF motors and no sign of updates. I really have no idea what the best choice is. Probably people should try using them and pick the one that feels best in the hand and easiest to select options and change them repeatedly, plus a good EVF. I suspect a camera you like from the emotional level and find easy to use is a better solution than trying for one that is best at everything (doesn't exist), unless you want to do just one thing well (e.g. wildlife, social, etc.), when it's probably none of these.

About the time of the EOS R, I think it was, Canon announced the EF-M 32 mentioned here, And now the EOS M 6 Mark II. I don't think these are going away, they sell very well, particularly in Japan.

I wish they'd mentioned that Sony licenses the E-mount specs out to those third parties, unlike the reverse-engineering done for all of the competitors here. (Seriously, the Sigma lenses upgrade on-body using the same software Sony does for their own lenses!)

I am sure they will support the EF-M mount in the future. The M6 II shows that they want to make the cheaper APSC cameras with M mount and FF with RF mount. EOS M cameras are also the best selling cameras in Asia. The small size of the cameras and lenses is a huge selling point. You can’t make cameras and lenses quite that small with the RF mount.

Hi, Chris !!! Excelent video !!! In my humble opinion, and based on my experience, in terms of VIDEO characteristics (NOT professional) I would summarize it like this: Nikon Z50: - The best image quality in APS-C (excellent clarity and sharpness). - The best low-light performance (very low digital noise level). - The best screen (biggest). - The one with the best audio capture (with internal mic). - The one with the best grip. Sony A6400: - The one with the best autofocus (fast and precise). - Great availability of lenses. - The one with the best options for post-production. - The only one that has unlimited video recording (limited only by the battery, of course). - Fuji XT-30: - The one with the best colors. - Great availability of lenses. Canon M6: - The one with the best skin tones. Keep it up, Chris !!! Greetings !!!

3:04 a6400? ;-) I have an X-T30 (which has an outstanding sensor), but I would rather have the Z50 dual lens kits (because it would be fit better with my setup, already owning a Z7 which I love. I had the a6400 but had to return it since I couldn't stand the body.

Loved this review. I'm a Nikon crop DSLR user but was planning on switching to mirrorless as I'll be doing hybrid shooting. Fuji makes amazing crop sensor cameras but is it viable if there's no full-frame option to upgrade to in the future? I was disappointed with the Z50 not having a fully articulating screen. I would even consider it if it was flip up but it flips down under! So I can't use a tripod or a gimbal and face the camera to me. Even their D5xxx series has fully articulating screen. I don't mind using the FTZ adapter on some of my 2.8 lenses but no log mode is also disappointing. Considering the XS-10 because of IBIS and the film simulation and no real need to color grade for quick videos but I'm apprehensive as I won't have an upgrade path in the future as Fuji doesn't make full frame bodies. Sony 6600 checks a lot of boxes but the price point is way too much and yes, their lenses are quite expensive. Lowest barrier to entry is the Fuji as even their XA series has at least decent performance.

I don’t know why you would omit M43 from a comparison like this. Both Panasonic and Olympus have been in this game for a very long time, have excellent systems, cameras, and lens lineups, and a hell of a lot to offer.

I have to disagree with that "Design & Handling" section. Sony's should be on top. Why? Because you can operate the entire camera with ONE hand PLUS they're small and light. Fuji has so many dials making it feel retro and tactile, but you need to use TWO hands to operate the ISO/Shutter... You can't just run-and-gun with it. If you're a street photographer, this is essential! Not only that, but because Sony's autofocus system is leagues ahead of the competition, it just makes GETTING good pictures so easy with a Sony. Lastly, Sony APS-C lenses tend to be cheaper in general compared to Fuji's. Sigma anyone??? If you're a street photographer who just wants to take great images and edits RAW photos anyway, Sony is definitely the way to go.
