They came back on my Pens in 1975. Down 3 games to none, the Islanders changed goalies: benched Billy Smith and started Chico Resch. Won 4 straight games banishing my Pens to yet another fruitless offseason.

As an Islanders fan, it was thrilling to see the team do something in 1975 that hadn’t been done since the 1942 Maple Leafs (coming back to win a series after being down 0-3). They fell behind 0-3 again to Philly before losing game seven in the next series. That was almost 50 years ago. This is a completely different team now. The goaltending has to be damn near perfect because they don’t get that many shots on goal and they have a hard time scoring. If they play hard and get a few breaks, maybe they can get back into the series. Coughing up that 3-0 lead in game two hurt them big time.

This series should be tied at least 2-2. Its more evenly matched than people think. The Isles might not be as skilled overall as the Canes, but they are a proud gritty team that plays with a lot of heart and passion. The breaks seemed to go Carolin's way the first 3 games, but if Lady Luck decides to even things out, anything can happen!

This was my first in-person playoff game ever. Have to give credit to the Isles fans for bringing the intense atmosphere.

Fun fact: the assist on the ot goal was the 1st point of the season for Bortuzzo. 4 regular season games with St. Louis, 23 with the isles, 4 full playoff games + 1 full ot period pointless. Great time to get on the board.

I’m an isles fan with no delusions of grandeur, but I think this was an important win for Roy and for Barzal, which matters if they’re going to be here for a while.

I was just on a train from the city to Long Island. We passed the arena when ot started and it was erie. Usually you see someone leave early but not for this game!

As a Canes fan, I don't know why, but I had the feeling we weren't going to finish them off today. People attacked me for thinking it wasn't going to be a sweep, but I felt that way and I was right.

Islanders win the series in Game 8

as an Isles fan while I'd like to believe they can pull the comeback off, it really does feel like an insurmountable mountain. It just doesn't feel like we are as competitive with them as we were last year when we played, and the energy on the road hasn't been great. With this next game being on the road and being a must win, I don't have the best feeling, but the Isles have surprised me before so maybe they will again. Who knows.

Isles fan here - maybe a simple statement, but if the Canes don't finish us off in game 5, I think it goes 7 and then anything can happen. It's obnoxious to say, but other than game 2 where we were absolutely dominated (the 3-0 was a mirage) this is been a very even series. I can't blame Roy for putting in Sorokin for game three, game two was so horrible that he needed to change something, and you can't sit 8 guys...bummed it didn't work and hindsight is 20/20. I'm not confident, but hey, weirder things have happened

One stat that I pull for this game. The hits. When a home team gets almost double the hits on the visitors, it tends to fuel not only the players, but the crowd as well. I know the Canes are a "finesse" team (strange, considering who the coach is, but hey) and that's fine when you're ahead, or playing at home. Not so much on the road against an angry team. I was frankly surprised that Carolina stayed in it. The Isles played good...This one's going 6 at least...

NYI yeah they play well enough during major portions of these games but they just don't have enough of high end talent to score enough goals to win. They definitely need to add a top end goal scorer.

As a Rangers fan im looking for this series to continue. A tired Vanes team would be great and Andersen isnt playing amazing right now.

I'm an Isles fan and I have to admit that Carolina is a fantastic team. We can certainly compete with them when we're 5 on 5, but the Hurricanes are just an incredible team. They're playing at the top of their game and are a force to be reckoned with. I'll always be proud to be an Islanders fan, though. Our team always puts up a fight and works incredibly hard. We're the complete opposite of the Maple Leafs, who seem to lack the grit and determination that our team demonstrates every postseason. LETS GO ISLANDERS.

Isles are good at scrums in postseason that generate favorable outcomes. With Orlov and Guentzel sitting in box to start 2OT.. their pair in the box served its purpose.

Reminded me of Isles with Barry Trotz and those stellar postseason runs..the willingness to get into things physically became a good intimidation factor especially against a really talented Tampa team, for example. So this struck me as timely yesterday..maybe it was just fatigue..I would have thought too tired to be throwing punches 🙃.. but it did seem to set Isles up for that second OT.

The rule that got Slavin penalized should be rewritten. He wasn't trying to delay the game, just trying to knock down a flip into the zone. Ultimately, it didn't matter, but didn't seem fair. Thought the Canes were going to get the winner in OT1, but NYI persevered. On to Raleigh...

Isles fan here, I think this series goes 6. Maybe even 7. Canes will likely prevail tho. They’re obviously the better team, but the isles aren’t going to give up. Need varly to stay strong and keep up the presence in front of Andersen. Pelech and Pulock look washed right now, but if they can muster up a little strength to win a couple board battles and not turn it over, maybe the isles make this a series.

I think reverse sweeps aren't the impossible they once were. For this Isles team, if they believe in themselves, anything is possible.

Unpopular opinion: OT period should be played in full no matter what, not end with the first goal.

Less and less impressed by Hurricanes as we go on...bad on me picking them to win the East. They still lack that high end offensive punch that has held them back in just about ever playoff run.

I have been an Islander Fan since they started. No guarantees but I do not see them coming back. Carolina is significantly better then they are. Low team speed. And their PK stinks. Actually, I think they were a bit lucky in Game 2 to be up by 3 goals and to hold onto the lead has long as they did.

We did not deserve to win… this team is still losing in 5 games does nothing to convince me that this team is any good or belongs in the playoffs. They need more offensive talent desperately. See no positives to come out of this series other than the perception this team is in a better spot than it is. A retool could really help out.

Very frustrating. So easily could've won games 1 and 2. Could be 3-1. I think if Isles can somehow win game 5, they'll win game 6 at him and game 7 is a coin flip. Notwithstanding Lou PLEASE get like top more top 6 Fs this offseason

This could be a very different series to be sure!

Canes went 33% at the dot, no way you win most games with that amount of lost possession. KK misses 2 wide open nets, Aho playing like he has the flu (could’ve been that dirty cross check to his neck from Bortuzo), and some poor 5v5 play, this coulda been a 4-1 Canes win. Isles aren’t giving up much, it’s gonna be a good game in Raleigh (Raw-Lee) for game 5. I expect the Canes to close it out at home in 5 games.
