2020 UPDATE: A TRAVELLER'S REVIEW
My month long travels in November 2019 have shown me that the Hobonichi is not a system that is friendly to planning on the go for me, especially while travelling long hauls extensively. Because I travel rather frequently, I am forced to revisit the reality of what Hobonichi has to offer for me personally:
A great home planner system, but not one to travel with.
While travelling, I plan monthly and daily, so weekly planners do not work as effectively, even if they tend to be lighter to travel with. (Ironically, the weekly format works fine while not travelling). The A5 Hobonichi Techo Cousin is DEFINITELY too large, too heavy, and too bulky to travel with!
I found these two below to be better companions for travelling, mainly due to their sizes and weights -
* Traveller's Notebook Passport Size • A TRAVELER'S REVIEW ||...
* Lihit Lab Smart Fit "Carrying Pocket For Travel" • ⭐️A TRAVELER’S REVIEW:...
I have also found Hobonichi covers to be too vulnerable to damages during travels, because my planner/s spend most of its / their time in a backpack and sometime suitcases. This was something I had anticipated, but wanted to try out anyway. I also grew continuously uneasy about the amount of plastic Hobonichi uses especially for their covers. (The scent of plastic is also very strong, and for some reason although I am taken back to my childhood in the 1970s and 1980s, which is one of the loveliest period of my life, the smell of plastic also disturbs me. Perhaps because of my recent awareness of how doomed we are with the current rate of industrial plastic production).
So I am returning to my usual tried and tested covers: Leather.
All I can say for now is that as far as travelling is concerned, "Traveller's Company" (formerly known as Midori) certainly has earned their brand name!

CORRECTIONS
* The Birds and Flowers corduroy Cover is an A5 (Cousin)
* I don't know when the Chikyu Chan cover and original techo were issued, only that it has an APRIL 2019 start :)
* The Earth Headed Chikyu Chan wasn’t the first one to arrive, but the first one I use, because it is a 2019 techo :)
* Mina Perhonen fabrics weren’t individually embroidered, but they are often heavily embroidered fabrics
* Hobonichi 2020 did actually respond to the feedbacks about daily date pages being too much space for planning and not enough space for journaling, with their “dateless” range (not to be confused with their plain notebooks or as some call them graphs notes because of the squares instead of lines in them - note that this serves Japanese characters instead of the Latin scripts some of us operate with)

This was so thought provoking! I love stationary, journals, paper etc. Nothing surprising! All that said, I am not sure that I have found my number one/ticks all the diary just yet. There is no doubt that there are many beauties out there for. I think one of the main issues for me is that I continue to evolve, therefore my needs and requirements continue to morph also. All that said, I love getting a glimpse into the journaling practices and personal preferences of others. I've learned a lot from you today, Anneke. Thanks so much for sharing. And don't get me started on exchange rates and expenses incurred by us Antipodeans who crave a quality product and a bit of class!

Pathways and Possibilities I get you on the continuous morphing. Indeed my own needs and requirements changed periodically. Which is why it took me this long to return to some form of written organisation! Especially come to thoughts. In the last four years, vlogging has served as some form of thought organisation for me somewhat. It has been an especially public way of going through private thoughts and reflections, but as a small channel it was possible, as you and many know. I am still and will likely remain a small(er) channel. But as you have experienced, none of us are the same person from who we were four years ago! I am glad to be returning to my more private corner, and these babies should help me go to a place I have been needing to go back to for a couple of years now :)

@@NobodyHere so fascinating as I am just coming out of my private corner. I feel it is time to share again (mind you, nothing in my world is 'certain' but at least I feel it is time to sit before the camera, for as long as it feels appropriate. These cycles fascinate me, no end! I have a "thought diary" of sorts and you have inspired me to pick it up and resume my practices (as I went off track a little bit this year) so thank you again! Always lovely to speak with you Anneke!! :)

Thank you for this video. I too am a leather binder person. Namely Filofax since early 90s. But I’ve recently become enthralled w Hobonichi and their cloth covers. My sense is that once attired, it will live on my nightstand for journaling and not travel in my purse. Thank you for sharing the idea of the “thought” journal......

Yes, they seem to be a bed side type of cover to me too. In that sense they are more decorations, than anything else. So.... I am selling almost all of my covers :) I will link a video of them in the description section under the video if I haven't already. Yes, "thought journal" :) Thanks for watching! :)

Nobody Here was trying to figure out how to send a direct message but failed.....so you are selling or were selling the wood bird covers in blue and grey? But I’d really like to talk w you about “thought journaling”. I googled the term but it appears to be more about self care and mental health? It seemed to me you were speaking more about capturing your critiques/opinions on what is going on in the world and developing a system to do that? Is that correct?

@@Chinnwood Yes I am selling that :) I would be happy to just get as much cost back and entertain any offers. YT sucks in so many ways, and yet some of us are stuck with them it seems. YT sucks big time with regards to internet safety and private messaging. They are more and more media than social these days. For both of our safety, can I refer you to a Hobonichi Buy Sell Trade group on Facebook? As for "thought journal" that is just my own term. I don't really have a system and I have no idea how other people do it, or if they do it at all. I just have a lot of thoughts and need to put them down somehow as a way of organising my own thoughts.

Nobody Here understand about the privacy issue. It is one of the reasons I deleted Facebook a few months ago. So I don’t see a way for us to undertake a transaction. In truth, this is the longest convo I’ve had w anyone on a social media outlet in months! :) it was your thought journal comment that got me. Well thanks for considering my question and for your videos. Just received my A5 Cousin this afternoon. A6 is toooo small.......thanks again.

I love notebooks, journals, and schedules! I think I may have found the schedule I like for my family book but I want a personal one that's not biz related. Essentially, this was a fun video for me! Also, congrats on the wedding! I watched your video on this life event but didn't get to comment and I was on for a few minutes in your last live stream before I had to close the app for work so I didnt get a chance to chime in even though I wanted to.

BoyDiviner CORRECTION! That birds and flowers cover is an A5! So smaller than an A4. My bad! I was eyeing that MD notebooks at a local pen shop! But I couldn’t figure out if the book covers are sturdy enough for me to slip them into covers such as these ones here. I finally search for them on KZread last night (don’t know why I didn’t think about that before) and it looks like their covers are cardstock so should be fine! I am going to check them out in Singapore, but as you know, during international travels, weight allowances are as precious as gold! (Especially if you wanna bring local snacks and medicinal oils back haha). So might order one from my local pen shop here in New Zealand if I like the look of it. What do you think about Hobonichi’s plain notebooks? Personally, for me, when I see how people “plan” especially on KZread, in my world that’s journaling. Or scrapbooking. For this reason I am nervous about wasting money buying these hobonichi techo to try. But there isn’t any other way to try these things, but to try them.... I do feel that unless I become attached to Hobo’s system, I would go back to cheaper planners and stick to blank notebooks for the rest....! We shall see! 😅 I am glad you took me down this road. It seems that I have spread the stationery love to at least one other person and it is making quite a pleasant productive changes in her daily operations! 😁 So, some of us really needed to be led this way and I can’t thank you and Katey enough! Bobby too for the pens because she is in NZ she has all the good leads for suppliers 😂 - PS: My previous video showing that Chikyu Chan Cover was a bit of a rant video so be prepared 😜 It was supposed to be my first Hobonichi haul video!

I love Twsbi! If you want a good one to fly with try the Twsbi Vac Mini. That has a mechanism that completely seals off the main ink chamber from the nib and feed. Or you could travel with an empty fountain pen and carry your ink in something like the Visconti travel inkwell. Love all your Hobonichi covers 😍😍😍

mini purple trees This is the second time I heard about the Visconti ink well! I have also heard of the vac and will definitely check it out. For the moment though, I am happy to leave my fountain pens back home when I travel! Things tend to be chaotic and fast moving when I do, so minimising volume and weight is a must! I can already tell you that as much as I love this particular hobonichi planner, it isn’t my favourite to travel with. A review upcoming hopefully if I have time. No promises! I have to really think about what I am doing on KZread before I invest anymore time here 😅

I was so close to getting a zip cover for my weeks. At the moment I have one of those annoying wallet style phone covers, so I thought it would be nice for my planner/wallet to be combined so I can just have a regular phone case... but boy are those Hobonichi zipper covers pricy, you got that right! They all look so lovely, and the one you have is so pretty, but it was just a bit too much for me to swallow this year! See yours though, is making me reconsider, I can't lie! XD

Katey Flowers I honestly think the Mina Perhonen fabrics made them a bit steep and after seeing the quality control on mine I am not entirely sure they are worth it 😣 BUT Having said that they are lovely 😊 and although second hand ones often ask for only slightly under retail, especially for more recent editions, some used ones are - to me - pretty OK value for money. In essence, with some nice fabric ones, we are paying for the fabrics 😳😬💜
